    I personally preferred the SG. In fact, I think that is a pretty coveted sound; getting some clean w/ the edges rounded out by the fizzy fuzz but then upping the volume knob, digging in and getting a saturated thick tone. Probably close to "The Who Live At Leeds" sound. I didn't get a fuzz from my dad but I got that record!
    Another great video Eric, thanks a million!!

    Oh my word! -Flashback! In the early '70s, I had bought a "Gun Metal" colored Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, just like your Dad's, from the original small E.U. Wurlitzer Store in downtown Boston for $75. Though the store sold it new, I had to replace the 3 missing rubber feet on it, & someone had curiously hammer-dented the bottom of one of the pots inside. But it worked fine. In my band, when I used it mainly with my Fender Stratocaster and Fender Telecaster, it had a fantastic thick woolly sound. It was the only fuzzbox I know of, where the fuzz sound got stronger, when you rolled off the highs on the guitar's tone control. When you only rolled back the guitar's volume control, with the fuzz on, it cleaned up beautifully. Alas, somebody stole it from our band's practice room in our bassist's MIT Dorm basement. I had never seen another "Gun Metal" colored Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, until seeing your Dad's. Now I know mine likely had silicon transistors too! Thank you for your posting!

    That's the pedal used on Dark Side of the moon btw...pretty cool gem you've got there. Just throw on a Color Sound Power Boost, if you cna find one, an Echorec, and a Univibe and your pretty dang close to Gilmours pedals..just need the Strat and Amp.

    That's a 68. They redesigned the flat part where the knobs are was extended further towards the center, and the width was shortened a bit. Only lasted for a while in 68. In 69, the design reverted back to the original shape.
    There's a whole lot of cosmetics that changed over a very short time. Here's a list of what I know of:
    66-67 the colors were dark gray, silver gray, and red. The smiles in the gray ones were black with white lettering, white on the red ones. The grays were hammertone, red was more like a rough orange peel. The knobs were first aluminum skirted and topped, switching to black top hat, with a triangle pointer. The logo was right on the edge of the flat part. The earliest red ones had black writing, and "Arbiter England" in red letters. Late 67 smile changed to dallas arbiter england
    68: change to silicon transistors, the knobs change to a narrow diameter with a very short skirt and line pointers, and the aforementioned outer redesign of the shape. The logo moved closer to the center, all smiles became white.
    69: shape reverted to normal, with slightly less rounded edges, standardized black top hat knobs with a dot pointer, small batch of turquoise hammertone painted ones, logo near centered between the flat part and the center.
    1971: blue and dark blue paint became available, logos and control names become decals.
    1974/75 smile changed to dallas music industries, housing edges became harder, and the pedal became much taller.
    76/77 new awful looking knobs, gray paint, rubber pad had side to side tread lines, usually at a diagonal, smile usually said CBS/arbiter, production ends.
    Also at one point on the inside, the added a flat spot for a 3rd knob for the "Treble and Bass Face".

    Are the new arbiter fuzz faces much different from the vintage ones?

    • @EricMerrow
      @EricMerrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question that I'm honestly unsure about. My guess is that the new ones use more modern parts that are more consistent and they are probably built in different way. But I would also imagine that the new ones sound pretty close to the older ones. Thanks for watching!

    • @rebeccabailey527
      @rebeccabailey527 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Circuit wise, they're all different, some are really close though, but they all sound like a fuzz face.
      The jdf2 (the normal size red one) is a hold over of the late 90s, lots of extra parts, pcb soldered to the switch, all the wires are connected to the pcb by a pc like connector. But it's germanium. People always want germanium despite germanium transistors being wildly variable, and extremely sensitive to temperature. At around 80 degrees F, germanium tends to get farty, mushy, and boomy, like a 66-67 fuzz face. It also has cheap pots, cheap jacks. It's a hold over of how dunlop made pedals in the late 90s.
      The JH-F1 (normal sized) hendrix fuzz face is silicon, based on a 70 fuzz face, it has bc108 transistors, much higher quality parts, the pcb looks like its supposed to, everything laid out the same, but underneath there 4 extra surface mount parts, 2 trim pots to adjust the bias, and an extra resistor and extra capacitor, to stabilize it.
      The Eric Johnson is also based on a very late 60s early 70s fuzz face, with bc183 transistors, the circuit path is slightly different, and biased to be spitty.
      The bonamassa one is designed with low gain germanium, meant for humbuckers, I imagine the circuit is als a bit different too.
      Then there's the minis. Very few normal sized parts, lots of extra surface mount parts, led and ac jacks (that aren't needed in my opinion) they do sound a little different compared to the big versions of the same kind, ie the big hendrix and the mini hendrix are different sounding.
      The jimi hendrix band of gypsys is not a fuzz face, just a really high volume, high gain fuzz circuit in a fuzz face housing.
      Also sometime around 2012-2013, the fuzz face housing got thinner, and lighter, the rubber pad also got thinner with thinner tread, and will show wear much faster. They also changed the paint of the hendrix fuzz face. Originally the metal was heavily pitted, the paint was applied, and wiped off, leaving only the pitting painted, then clear coated, looked like very heavy metal flake. Now they don't do that. It's just turquoise. The pcb was originally brown, with no solder mask, but now they're black with a solder mask.
