Pretty sure the attempt at empathy was accidental, considering how ill-informed The Beat was plus attempts that are planned lose effectiveness. Any kind of feeling you gain from her, whether regret or anger, is still a response she managed to create due to her complete naivety.
I remember a comment someone said about the placement of The Beat that I agreed with. Given the order of battles, who comes before her? The Edge. The guy who can literally down you in three hits and as the Voice described, the toughest one there. The other guardians knew the Beat had no place as a guardian but humored her anyway, and that's why she's last. Because you were never supposed to reach her in the first place.
Even The Voice was mad about this - before you fight her he expresses quite clear anger about the decision of putting her as the last Gaurdian because she’s so ill prepared but yet wants to be a hero, his last line clearly shows he’s more so sad about it than actually enraged. Which makes sense considering he’s also a father so he’d know a thing or two about a child’s naivety.
I understand why she was the last, she had something that would stop us, she had her childlike innocence, if we passed all the others, the only thing stopping us would be our sense of humanity, unfortunately it wasn't enough.
While it was an inevitability for the Rider to escape (pseudo-immortality kind of does that), the Beat was probably the strongest obstacle for it, as even feeling insulted that a kid is the final fight still provokes a human response. Even if she did stop the Rider though, The Star would have sent another unit down if it took long enough, so really there was only one way this was going to end. Shame they never listened to The Line.
"You're not what I was expecting" - I love the subtle writing of this game, they trained edge to be the final encounter, their last hope to defeat us in combat - and the beat being their last hope to reach us through humanity, which.. doesn't work

This isn't really a fight. That's a murder. That is why this scene is very strong. A player is being forced to become a murderer to finnish the game. He doesn't even take her hand. On the other hand, it is sort of pure. He is not being a hypocrite.

I also theorise the reason she is called The Beat is because of heartbeat and not music beat, because of the wholesomeness and truth in her heart. her and The Song are similar in that they want keep on about protecting everyone down below (which is something no one else really talks about, except for maybe The Hand), but Song wants to protect people so she is seen as a hero and gets praised, while Beat just wants to protect them out of her love; from the bottom of her heart. as soon as her heartbeat stopped, humanity was basically doomed (if it wasn't for The Voice). and like another comment said; she was last, because if none of the before could stop him, maybe he'd have enough heart to not kill a child (which honestly is naive, actually).
I waited like 5mn, doing nothing else than parry against the very few attacks in the final phase... ... until i realized that even if you don't parry, you cannot take damage from her. She still have the will to fight, even when she's hurt and completely exhausted but that's not enough. Not only is The Beat defenseless, but she's literally too weak to allow any other sort of ending. It's not a boss fight, it's a cold murder that the player isn't even allowed to stop by losing. I can't stop thinking about the moment she says "Fall back, please !". It's a truly desperate voice attempting to reach the protagonist's humanity, without success. The boss fight music stops, and a new track called "A monster" plays just for this final duel... cruelly fitting. I won't talk about when she's asking you to hold her hand as she's dying or else i might start crying. Rarely i've seen a game able to make me feel that bad, not even because it's a decision over an other, but because it's just the only way available. Amazing work
i mean in the end he had to kill her or else he won't get his freedom,don't forget they basically stationed there to deny it.she willingly chose to go against him even knowing how weak she is so she had to take responsibility when she loses. but in the other it makes sense why they did all that since he was a walking disaster, this is why it's a sad situation for both sides.
People complaining about the difficulty of this fight are the same kind of people that whined over how easy Yhorm the Giant was in Dark Souls 3. Is having one boss be more about the story/emotions over the player really such a sin, or do that many people not get it?
Yhorm was a shitty boss though. His mechanics had nothing to do with the story, Fromsoftware just wanted to do fan service with the Stormruler. Could've been a much cooler fight. Yhorm is only interesting when Siegmeyer's fucking twin with you.
Mango Nah, Dark Souls 3 had a much more emotional boss who was actually relatively difficult being the Soul of Cinder, hearing Gwyns theme was fucking amazing and made it incredibly memorable.

The voice tries to convince you that he put her there because she wanted in so he just stuck her at the back but no. That’s not why. Her on furier actually irritated me. Granted on furier all bosses turn to cancer I mean "true difficulty" mode. I actually lost to her after beating the song and the burst on my first try for furier mode. Edge still kicked my butt though. Haven't beat star yet that last stage is hell
I think personally I hate the Purple Rabbit because he uses us the entire game. He has the motivation to see his own daughter, sure, I can understand that. But he literally manipulates a entity he KNOWS will likely doom his entire world and orchastrates the murder of all the Guardians (the folk who literally are defending the world) and won't even lift a finger to fight his own battle. The dude is literally the equivalent of Loki from the MCU if he just handed the Infinity Stones to Thanos, helped him slaughter all the heroes, and then hedged all his bets on a 50/50 chance that he wouldn't die in the ensuing snap that wipes out half the universe.
that's what makes him a compelling character, imo. part of the theme of this game is that the player starts out not really knowing what to think of Rider, or purple rabbit dude. but as the game goes on, it becomes more and more clear that yeah, you ARE as bad as they say, and your "friend" is actually just a selfish, crazy, irresponsible coward. by the time the credits roll, there should be no doubt in your mind that you just played an entire game as the villain, aided by another villain. and then you get the sudden surprise redemption(?) arc
Really wish they would have spelled out why the killing is required to open the gate. This doesn't appear to be magic so why is this required. I only ask because this open question kind of cuts against the impact of the scene. I was more irritated than sorry when it happened.
It isn't. Guardians can willingly open the gate, but the Beat -- nor any other Guardian, besides the Architect (the Voice) -- will never open the gate and let The Rider through. The Beat was giving it everything she'd got.

@@RedCornix the idea is that it’s supposed to be an inescapable prison. i presume the guardian’s powers/life force are what keep the gate shut, as the Voice says himself that he “could not defeat his greatest creation”. Some sort of function that he put in the Jail was enough to stop him from being able to escape
Lorewise she was put as a last boss in prison since she s obviously a newbie. And since other jailers had a compassion and sympathy for her they put her in last prison, since they are more capable fighters.
The fact that she was built up from the beginning of the game as an extremely hard boss only to be a pushover who instead tries to talk and understand the stranger is what makes it have a much better emotional impact due to the sheer subversion of expectations.
Narrative reasons. She's the last in the prison and therefore the least dangerous and the fight is not about power, it's a moral struggle. You're supposed to be the obviously stronger character and in her final phase she doesn't even fight back. It's not supposed to feel like a satisfying fight but more like a coldblooded murder. You're supposed to feel like shit after stomping her so hard and then killing her despite her efforts to appeal to your reason and I think it works.

I didnt mind the first time, I just sped run the whole game. However after playing the game for the second time on furier and focusing on all the narrative, this whole game had me wowed and moved beyond anything I had ever experienced with the exception of a few special games.

You should pick up the game yourself and see how it unfolds. It's fun but the story and its themes are also really great to take in.

everyone's talking about how sad this boss fight was, but me personally, was laughing my ass off at how a trained warrior who had just slaughtered 8 of the most powerful people on the planet, was relentlessly beating the shit out of a child
Her on furier actually irritated me. Granted on furier all bosses turn to cancer I mean "true difficulty" mode. I actually lost to her after beating the song and the burst on my first try for furier mode. Edge still kicked my butt though. Haven't beat star yet that last stage is hell
I think personally I hate the Purple Rabbit because he uses us the entire game. He has the motivation to see his own daughter, sure, I can understand that. But he literally manipulates a entity he KNOWS will likely doom his entire world and orchastrates the murder of all the Guardians (the folk who literally are defending the world) and won't even lift a finger to fight his own battle. The dude is literally the equivalent of Loki from the MCU if he just handed the Infinity Stones to Thanos, helped him slaughter all the heroes, and then hedged all his bets on a 50/50 chance that he wouldn't die in the ensuing snap that wipes out half the universe.
that's what makes him a compelling character, imo. part of the theme of this game is that the player starts out not really knowing what to think of Rider, or purple rabbit dude. but as the game goes on, it becomes more and more clear that yeah, you ARE as bad as they say, and your "friend" is actually just a selfish, crazy, irresponsible coward. by the time the credits roll, there should be no doubt in your mind that you just played an entire game as the villain, aided by another villain. and then you get the sudden surprise redemption(?) arc

Really wish they would have spelled out why the killing is required to open the gate. This doesn't appear to be magic so why is this required.
I only ask because this open question kind of cuts against the impact of the scene. I was more irritated than sorry when it happened.
It isn't. Guardians can willingly open the gate, but the Beat -- nor any other Guardian, besides the Architect (the Voice) -- will never open the gate and let The Rider through. The Beat was giving it everything she'd got.

@@RedCornix It’s only the individual Guardian of each stage. It’s why the Voice could escape his stage but couldn’t completely break out of the prison itself - because he couldn’t beat the other Guardians
@@drenchedinsyrupp6059 but why does it work that way if he both built the prison and can freely open the gate once the guardian is gone? Why can't the voice just pop open the gate after rider avoids the big blast at the end?
@@RedCornix the idea is that it’s supposed to be an inescapable prison. i presume the guardian’s powers/life force are what keep the gate shut, as the Voice says himself that he “could not defeat his greatest creation”. Some sort of function that he put in the Jail was enough to stop him from being able to escape
Why is this Boss fight so easy in compare with outhers? Easy Mode?
I think it's so that you gain compassion towards the jailers, this was the only time I felt bad when I killed a boss
Lorewise she was put as a last boss in prison since she s obviously a newbie. And since other jailers had a compassion and sympathy for her they put her in last prison, since they are more capable fighters.
The fact that she was built up from the beginning of the game as an extremely hard boss only to be a pushover who instead tries to talk and understand the stranger is what makes it have a much better emotional impact due to the sheer subversion of expectations.
Narrative reasons. She's the last in the prison and therefore the least dangerous and the fight is not about power, it's a moral struggle. You're supposed to be the obviously stronger character and in her final phase she doesn't even fight back.
It's not supposed to feel like a satisfying fight but more like a coldblooded murder. You're supposed to feel like shit after stomping her so hard and then killing her despite her efforts to appeal to your reason and I think it works.
4:10 i think that the only bad think about this game is his english voice acting, it have no feelings, it's like "you take this and read it" without give them the context.
i kind of agree that the delivery isn't so good and the timing/placement of the voicelines is jarring, but it kinda works a little bit because purple bunny is supposed to be irresponsible, crazy, and pretending everything is fine to keep Rider cooperative
This Boss fight was the easiest by far. I BEAT her on my first try.

I didnt mind the first time, I just sped run the whole game. However after playing the game for the second time on furier and focusing on all the narrative, this whole game had me wowed and moved beyond anything I had ever experienced with the exception of a few special games.
