I landed and injured my neck badly even on a soft gymnast bed when I first trying to learn and did "wait and tuck" and it hurt for 4 months!!
You need a spotter for "Wait and Tuck" training when you first start learning otherwise you could injure yourself badly

This is exactly the kind of thing that I want to prevent!! Sorry you went through that bro!

Learned back tuck from YT and waiting too long was one of my problems that caused me to barely land it on an air track. Once someone watched me and told me that he thought I was waiting too long at the top I instantly started landing them once I tucked earlier and right as I extended off the ground. Thank you for sharing this tip!

Definitely agree. The irony is that waiting for the extension and waiting for peak jump height tend to be conflated exactly because there isn't much height reached with the jump itself or much additional time to begin with. So beginners who actually have the guts to wait for long end up tucking while going down and risk not getting over.
If I might add something, to show beginners that landing a backflip straight has little to do with massive jump height, but rather a powerful tuck and the room given by a good extension, I demonstrate it on a mattress on the foam pit.

YES YES x1000 thank you! The ballsiest beginners get rewarded with the lowest more dangerous tuck attemps when they truly wait. And like you said there's not any huge amount of height to work with on a standing trick anyway, so the speed and timing are quick. Thanks for the comment!!!

Great! I really like how you explained that. The illusive tip of waiting before tucking may have helped people that tuck before leaving the ground completely. It is far better to develop the awareness of body extension first and make clear that you can't change your center of gravity max height anymore after you've left the ground, as you did. In contrast to waiting, meaning only letting the body follow its natural movement (passive extension) while still on the ground, one should ACTIVELY PUSH the body into extension before leaving the ground and then immediately tuck after takeoff to increase the peak cog height.

First, I def agree that saying “wait” to a beginner is not the best. I’ve taught a couple people backflips and I always try to explain that the “set” and the “snap” are different parts of the flip. When people want more height I suggest picking a spot point. Jump and extend, see the spot in front, then immediately tucking afterwards (which is what I think abt in my backflips). Definitely no time to wait, time to extend and spot. I’m not the best at back tuck though, just sharing how I think abt it

Very good point about the spot, i always forget about spotting as a tool because its something i rarely do in that way. Thanks for the comment!!

If you wait, you do get your chest higher in the air. It's not as efficient that way but it looks like you went higher. But pulling your tuck earlier doesn't appear as high but you can get around easier. Also it depends how your measuring hight.

Lmao, I literally just got back from a session that I decided to fix my weird ass backflip. Managed to learn whip, layout and do an actual backtuck where I'm not throwing my whole body back and half assing a tuck later. Definitely gonna get even better with these tips!

Height is so overrated, half of high level tricking consists on learning how to do low difficult tricks to use them as setups also it is healthier to land from lower heights in the long run
