- Which bit of Gazza magic led to him winding up David Seaman at every England camp? What’s it like on set when you’re doing a modelling shoot for a sponsor? At what stage will Man Utd no longer be considered a ‘big club’ if their years of mediocre results continue?
Gary and Alan also debate the possibility of the Premier League abolishing VAR.

Genuinely wish the Q&A episodes were longer, always a great listen
Tbf I could listen to these 3 for hours, especially Gary and Alan they feel like I've known them my whole life
Much better than the summary of the matches
Ask more questions 🤷🏽♂️
how do we ask question?
Agreed. The recap/review shows you hear off everyone in the same weekend gets hard to listen to. But when the guests come on and the Q and A episodes it’s much better and more fluid.
For pure entertainment and to get someone into football, has to be some Ronaldinho clips.
He would be my pick too.. He was pure entertainment. 👍
The only answer you could give I'd say, Messi is probably better overall with longevity and what he achieved but in terms of flair and playing with a smile on his face, pure entertainment, has to be Ronaldinho.
That goal against Chelsea 😮
Only right answer
Best first touch ever and that in football can be the difference maker.
That picture of Shearer and Ronaldo brought back so many good memories. Those kits. 🔥❤
Gerrard could've played anywhere on the pitch and still stood out IMO
I remember that 1991 semi final match like it was yesterday... Remember screaming my lungs out when Tottenham scored - and then went on to beat Forest in the final... That was the year I became a Gary Lineker and Spurs fan... Still am a fan of both to today : )
Some goal, that one from Gazza.
RIP Gary Speed
People always sleep in on Bob Paisley, when talking about great managers. It took Fergie 19 years at Utd, to win the same amount of trophies Bob won in 9 years. One of only 3 managers to have won 3 European Cups. Paisley, Pep, Zidane & Ancelotti has 5 🤴
(And Paisley lost a CL final & he left Joe Fagan a team that won the CL, the year he retired)
Think it's due to the pl bias
@joejo4549 They'll mention Clough often enough (who I love too) & they were talking about Cruyff, who also didn't win anywhere near what Paisley won.
+++
@matthewjamison you're absolutely right haha Cryuff i excused due to gary
100% agree Paisley should be mentioned amongst the very best of all time and never does
Bergkamp was most elegant footballer to watch
Berbatov
Greatest goal ever, Shearer wont love that it was against Newcastle's Nikos Dabizas
Hope Big Meeks rang in saying he wasn't turning uo to work lads 😂
Big Meeks? Don't think Keane would call him that. He's a clown
@JamesLenehan-e6zGet a life mate.
10 years of mediocrity but have had more trophies than Arsenal and any other club would've dreamed of in those 10 years
On the VAR subject as a Kenyan I have seen it working really well in the Rugby 7s where we tend to perfom well, its just a matter of the refferees and the people managing it not being up to standard. Stopping something good because the one implementing it is inadequate is simply mental. Why not have experienced VAR officials from other sports sit in with football officials and advice.
At 13:36 they show a teal Newcastle kit, whereas Alan is referring to the '96 home shirt re-make shown at 12:12
They were showing that one as that is selling well in the shop. He hasn’t seen the shirt and presumed it must a retro top. Harry will have added that later to show it’s not the one he thought it was. 👍
@@zeandean79 the question was regarding their favourite shirts/shirt sponsor, the recently launched retro top which is selling incredibly is the 96 home kit. The teal one pictured was a new design for a retro line and is not modelled after any Newcastle United kit.
Always a great listen guys, and Bob Paisley shouldn't be forgotten.
Marco van Basten and his 1988 final goal. He was playing ona broken ankle that intimately ended his career but what a player.
Or Ronaldihno at Barca, just a joy to watch
Listening to Gary's stories reminds you of what a fantastic player he was. He was one of the top forwards in world football for many years.
I just saw the highlights from 91 FA cup semis. WOW what a free kick..... that must have been 40 yards out.
Also Gary was such a dynamic player I would have love to have seen him play in the current Prem. Pace and the ability to be a fox in the box..... I was too young in 91 to remember, but what an amazing play Gary was....... ✨️✨️😌
Brilliant episode, these should be an hour long, so interesting.
20:09 I cant believe that qn appeals system STILL isn't in place for VAR. In almost every sport that uses a similar system, has an appeal system which works absolutely fine
Exactly. I watch cricket and the appeal system works so smoothly. I understand the differences between cricket and football and how officiating in cricket is easier, but the appeal system is amazing and nobody has a problem with it.
@@RiwazAryalexactly right ! 2 appeals per captain.
Nonsense. Cricket and tennis are the only sports I know of with the appeal system, and they have natural breaks between every ball/serve/rally. The dynamics of football are completely different!
@@Boognish69 That's exactly why I said 'I understand differences between cricket and football and how officiating in Cricket is easier'. If only people could read nowadays.
But the appeal will stop var interrupting every single time, except offsides. Goals such as VVD's goal v Chelsea in EFL cup final last season would not be ruled out. Appeal system and semi automated offside would develop the officiating so much more
@@Boognish69Doesn't hockey also use it? Which is far more like football in it's structure.
20:09 on this, if you've got two VARs plus the ref at a monitor then it can go on majority rule. If two agree on a decision then thats the decision made.
the issue there is having 2 out of 3 refs make a correct decision 😂
R9, Johan Cruyff, Van Basten, Gerrard, Ronaldinho, Paolo Maldini, Zidane, Messi, CR7, Bergkamp, Van Der Sar, Seedorf.
Watch any of these and you'll be hooked on football for life. Exceptional Ballers all of them.
Always enjoy seeing you two, and Meeks, when he is not busy admiring himself 😂.
Said it about VAR before and I'll say it again. Implement it like the RFU does, as a tool for the ref to check out decisions, let them see it on a touch line monitor and mike the ref up for the fans in the stadium
How many times are we going to hear about Gary's "appeal" system??
R9 and van basten are truly the saddest injuries ever
Maybe Gazza’s as well. He was at an unbelievable level and getting better before his moment of madness in the FA Cup final.
Cant believe Baz Duxbury spelt my name wrong but thanks for the mention Alan.............and yes Sutty did play!!!!
How can you possibly pick Pep over Ferguson???
Ferguson proved he can build a team who weren't previously successful.
Pep hasn't proved that.
They were previously successful.
Why does Pep need to prove that? No other top manager gets this same accusation levelled at him, completely aside from the fact that making an unsuccessful team successful in modern team is literally a billion times more difficult than it was in the 80s.
@@kb5509Most top managers had to work their way up to get in a top position, e.g. Mou building Porto or Klopp building Dortmund. Pep started his managerial right at the top with arguably the most gifted squad in history. Pep is great and his critics are being overdramatic salivating over 1 bad season, however it would have been interesting to see him at a smaller club, don't you agree?
I know it was Championship, but Lewis McGugan versus Ipswich is one of the best goals I've ever seen 😅
I think in your final year Gary, the foreign players at Barca with you were Aloisio (Brazil) and Romerito (Paraguay).
The following season Cruyff brought in Ronald Koeman and Michael Laudrup for yourself and Romerito
How on earth has Benzema been the player left out of the start sub sell when he’s the most clutch and won the most!
I might be asking too much but is it possible to add pictures of the player they are talking about , specially when its early 90s and time before that.
Steven George Gerrard is the best right back Inglund never had. I saw him play there once, he was incredible. His diagonal passing from that position might have stretched the best oppositions to breaking point. Overlapping past Beckham and leaving Lampard and Paul Scholes in midfield. OMG it seems so obvious now.
Would require a manager with vision and flexibility...
@@jeremywilliams5107 Can you imagine him inverting from that position like they do now?
I think firstly, a midfield two of Lampard and Scholes is less than ideal. Very unbalanced. Lampard is either sacrificing his entire game to do things he's not good at (like he did for England anyway), or Scholes is suffering from a fatal asthma attack trying to defend 3 players at once for the majority of the game.
Second of all, it could only have been obvious to Sven for a period of about 4 months. Because the few months up to and including Euro 2004 is the only time these 4 were in the England team. Although history seems to have been rewritten somehow as Paul Scholes being abandoned on the left wing for the best part of a decade.
Newcastle Brown Ale is still in business and is currently owned by Heineken, which purchased the Scottish and Newcastle breweries in 2008. Newcastle Brown Ale is still brewed in Tadcaster, Yorkshire; for the UK and some EU markets, and in the Netherlands for export.
Interesting!
The buy, sell, bench questions are done to death. Does anyone else find them utterly uninteresting?
14:53 I think that's my LEEDS supporting cousin, trying to land digs on my beloved United 😂
Mr Lineker,, there was no Portuguese player in the 80's playing for Barcelona, you must be confused with Brazilian Aloísio who played with you , from Porto FC . Keep up the great Podcast.
Yup, and it was Bernd Schuster the german midfielder the season before that.
I said this appeal system when VAR was first introduced. It then puts onus on the captain or coach whether to use their appeals up.
Makes sense
VAR should be changed, so that each club can use it 3 times to appeal against the refs decision. Similar to Tennis and Cricket in a way.
You can't even cheer a goal anymore in case we have to wait 4 mins to see if they can find a reason to disallow it.
Here's a start bench sell for you, Moore, Baresi, Beckenbauer
Garys idea around VAR is a must really on the appeals, like other sports. Taking the Arsenal example.. Manager on the side tells 4/5/6th official, I want this checked. Var checks it and in the mean time play continues. Within "hopefully" 15-30 seconds they've come to a decision whether or not to tell the Referee to stop game, go to the monitor. Reduces the referees now reliance on VAR and improve their on field decisions
For me, if I had to show anyone a footballer past or present it would 100% be Ronaldinho and there is no question about it! He was a joy to watch, the definition of like watching a kid play in the park. Just made the game look so easy! He might not have been around for long, but my god he was some player - don’t get players like that anymore!
Ronaldinho has to be the best way to get someone into football. Show Ronaldinho and then show a clips of messi dribbling past entire teams to score haha. The clips of those two bullying prime zidane, canavarro, roberto carlos and so on was amazing
How do you submit a question?
You just did 😂
Never knew about Gary’s Hatrick in Spain 🤯😉😂
Love the graphics in this episode
When it comes to VAR, the referee and linesmen should be the only ones with the power to tell the ref to look at a monitor. Not even because they think the decision is wrong, just if they think it might need a second look. Referees should have a phone in their top pocket with instant replays that are happening already on TV anyway. They can make a decision on the field and have five seconds looking at a replay to decide if they need a more detailed look on a big monitor
The question how to make someone appreciate football by one player, I would disagree with your answer. To appreciate Ronaldo one has to know the game, to get excited I would argue Ronaldinho. Love the cast. Not sure if YT allows this. But refound a brilliant clip so will share
th-cam.com/video/U5szk42dA1U/w-d-xo.html
Cheers from Amsterdam
its so much better and chill without micah going over the top with every single question or quote, its too much sometimes but this is much more relaxed. more of just these two!
For the manager, buy, sell, and bench, it should be who will be the manager, assistant manager, and sack
Yeah I thought similar. I thought of caretaker boss instead of assistant manager, but I think yours works better
Good call
Hire, fire and reserve
I think Messi is great obviously, but watching Ronaldo R9 was more exciting for me. All subjective really but other favourite player in my lifetime is Marco Van Basten
I agree with Gary, VAR appeal process is the way to go
1st question.
R9 vs Man U.
Standing ovation off everyone inside Old Trafford
Biggest change in VAR needed is in the stadium for fans. 5 mins to make a decision and keeping fans informed. To much is made for tv audiences
He should of stayed at barcelona, inter milans pitch has destroyed more players then him
Marco van basten also was destroyed by the famously bad san siro pitch
What ronaldo did in 2002 final was brilliant, kahn, was playing out of his skin, and although germany hit the post just before he scored, ronaldo was playing so well that day, he knew it was his day and he made it happen.
I like the idea of using VAR like they do in tennis so managers get 2 appeals and if they lose then they lose a challenge. You could have 2 appeals a half and if it goes to extra time you get an additional appeal so managers would only use appeals if theyre sure otherwise theyd lose a challenge.
Alan, no, in a challenge system, the VAR official disappears completely. The on-field referee is the one who reviews the video and decides whether to grant the appeal or deny it.
Regarding VAR they should bring in a rule that if the review takes over 60 seconds the on field decision should be applied.
Gary’s best game his hatRick against Poland in 86 World Cup, Gary at his best.
Question 1 answers are great, but Ronaldinho or ibrahimovic for something madness and spectacular goals
The Blackburn and forest comparisons are hilarious... it will take decades of us not competing for the prem and trophies, for us not to be seen as a massive club.
George Best is the go-to player to show someone who isn't into football. The best naturally skilful footballer of all time.
The attempt to be perfect has ruined VAR which could be good if: The Ref asks for it if he hasn't seen something - a junior ref is on VAR who will then only correct very clear mistakes by a senior Ref, a time limit to "see" a clear and obvious error.Toon 4:3 Lecester - Shearer hattrick
The other foreigner at Barcelona was Fernando Couto
Alan Harper from Everton
Alan did play with a player that played every position and done solid job __ james milner edit ** he just said him lol 😂
what Mr Lineker says about the VAR is the same as what Marco van Basten been saying for years... 2 moments that coaches can appeal. FIFA or UEFA installed him several years ago to look at the rules of the game and how to improve and they never listened to him. I'd play Zola and bench Di Canio. I used to watch them to learn from them. how they hit the ball etc. Amazing players. Can't recall the other name.
They need to get rid of the "clear and obvious error" language around VAR.
Another thing will be getting rid of the rule where VAR can't intervene for a 2nd yellow offence. If a player is going to be sent off the park then VAR should be able to tell the ref if it might be an error.
(sorry gary) i wiould genuinely show that crazy 3 minutes in extra time of watford vs leicester , or if they had the time the entire of the last world cup final
or some of my own bias, bristol rovers having to win by 7 on the last day to go up and actually doing it, wow
Gary you just said 1 on 1 with the keeper is your strength, how can one(Nunez) improve on this or any particular skill to make it a strength
The first question, ronaldinho or jj okocha. Anyone will love football after watching them
Champions league format could work, but countries would only hold quarters, semi n final to keep cost down all other games home n away bring revenue to countries worldwide
Was the centre back Gary mentioned whilst at Barca Aloísio Pires Alves?
Yep, Porto Legend and Olympic Silver Medalist
Yep, he's also Brazilian and not Portuguese. It did make me question Fernando Couto's age lol as he's the only Portuguese centre back to have played for Barcelona, but he only joined nearly 10 years after Gary's departure.
Manchester United always seem to be incredibly relevant and big, despite what happens.
I remember when Liverpool were poor 15 years ago, they just seemed to be just like any other club. Manchester United always seem to be the most talked about regardless
did Gary play for Barcelona? as in 'THE' Barcelona? LaLiga Barcelona?
Just saying that the image used for the retro toon kit was completely wrong. 😂. Love the pod though
1st question = Ronaldinho & Goal against us in 2002
Thing with VAR is if you have human beings making the decisions, there will be inconsistencies and errors, there is nothing you can do to change that.
Never mind getting rid of VAR, they should dump of PSR and FFP. Instead, if a club is in debt by over a million pounds, they should be banned from buying players. This would encourage youth development and let clubs like Newcastle, Villa, Everton etc be able to break through.
You stop being a Big club when you don't have a European trophy finish and klarr
R9 wasnt out for 3 and a half years, i dont know why Gary is saying he was!
Yeah he had around 3 years out all together due to patellar tendon issues but not in one go
@@adamiredale2089I think between 1999 and 2001 he missed 22 month of football due to 2 consecutive ACL tears. Obviously he missed games before and after that period too, and probably played many games under pain or pain meds.
@JarrettMehldau Yeah very unfortunate. I agree with Gary and Alan that he’d be up there in terms of goals with Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi quite comfortably if he wasn’t so unlucky with injuries.
Think Gary and Alan missed the idea of the World Cup with the new CL format.
Replace friendlies with World Cup League games. Over the 2/3/4 year period teams filter down to enough for a finals, which would occur every few years
Over time ( decade or two maybe ) your actual world rankings having this data to use would be the most accurate you'd ever get in international football
As soon as they said who could play anywhere gary speed came to mind what a player RIP
Only correct answer to the first question is Ronaldinho, Maradona or Pele. They actually did attract people to football in their careers. Honourable mentions to Theirry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo & George Best though.
So have lots of players.
No skin in the argument but in Man Utd’s worst period for years they’ve won more than Arsenal Newcastle Spurs Forest in the last 5/6 years been badly run and dropped standards but still a massive name.
With the full support & backing of the prem league & ring fencing PSR rules Man u are guaranteed to come back
Brown ale is still going but it's made in Yorkshire I think
I still do not understand how an appeal system would work. If you are appealing a decsion to the referee or VAR they are going to stick with their decision regardless?
The Bruno Fernandes red vs Spurs for example, Ref and linesman both said red then VAR confirmed the decision. Who are the appeals going to? That was overturned after the referee, linesman and 2 VAR assistants all said red. Appeal system would surely not change anything or am I misunderstanding? If someone would care to explain I would appreciate
I think they mean that it would only be checked by VAR if a team appealed, so it would be more like the cricket and tennis review systems.
It may not result in different decisions for particular incidents, but would reduce the number of delays for VAR checks because teams would have a limited number of appeals and need to use them wisely.
The Champion's League a.k.a The Top 4 League has been crap for a long time, the format this year is just extending it with more games and much less care for me. Haven't watched a single game and that will prob continue...might watch the final I guess.
Where do I send questions
kaka clips as he did EVERYTHING
As Ronaldinho said, Fratton Park has the best atmosphere in world football. Which ground, club or country, comes second?
Need to get S A S back together, get Sutton on lads
Of course you can still get newcey ale, best beer on earth
two legendary strikers both putting benzema last...should tell you everything about that guy benzema😂how he's the only one with a ballon d'or is an absolute robbery
How does one give questions
Pep is massively overrated he can only coach one style of play which is amazing but you have to have the best player in the world in every position to implement it, he couldn’t implement his style of play and get results out of a lesser poorer club x
Is Milner just a player that no matter what era of football you look at he will be pictured somewhere
Ruud Guillit arguably the best all round player to ever have played. Rooney, Bryan Robson, Gerrard
Don't forget Nedved, he could have played any position and excelled. He did play CM, fullback and winger. He had pace and he was 2-footed.
Based on showing someone clips to get them in to football, Giroud is up there with the highlight reel. haha
Alan Shearer - would have been a top defender cos he great in the air, & a strong midfielder with good passing ability
If my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bike
Sir ale, cruyff, pep is the only correct answer for the start bench sell question. Pep has shown this season alone that if things aren't going his way his only thought is to spend £200m. He doesn't know how to coach a team and bring out the best in them, he only knows how to spend until he gets results. Genuinely the most overrated manager in history.
And how is that different to the other two? Sir Alex didn't coach from about 1981. And when his United teams were playing poorly or needed rebuilding, did he buy a load of players on the cheap from League 2 and mould them into greats? Or did he also just spend a load of money and break loads of transfer records.
Exactly same with Cruyff, who people only don't criticise because they don't really know about his career. What happened at the end with Barcelona, when they were playing terribly for the last 2 years and the Dream Team needed rebuilding? He went out and spent a load of money on players, most of whom were massively expensive flops.
Managers at big clubs spend money, that is how football works. If one person is doing it,. just assume the others were as well.
@@kb5509 Pep has had one season where in the summer he couldn't go with a warchest and look at what has happened. He has ended up having to go and spend £200m in January. I'm a Liverpool fan so completely neutral on this, but comparing Pep who is clearly nothing more than a money manager to the other two is shocking. Fergie bought players, but he also moulded players into world class players(the likes of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Neville etc). He never spent close to the way that pep does to get his success and to even compare them both is insulting to Fergie.
Had no idea Gary Speed had passed. Just read about it, devastating story...
