Thank you for this video, sometimes I get disheartened seeing complex jig videos, this was a good reminder for me to not overthink.

Yeah man ! I love your last sentence about the simplicity of jig. You don't need a piece of art to make a piece of art after all!

I like the simple videos the most. I sometimes, (often to be honest) can't completely understand the more complicated ones.

I’m going to be a whiner today. I got chewed out big time for doing two things in my table saw sled video which you also did in this video. That was for using an “inaccurate” framing square as a reference for squaring up my sled and for gluing down my back fence, which makes it impossible to adjust afterwards. I like to think that you doing those things in your video helps validate me doing them in mine. Ok, I’m done whining and I feel better now. 😌

Good day godfather of jigs! Awhile back you had a Dewalt jod site saw, that you built a stand for. I have the same saw but I find the top to be to short from front to blade to really use any jigs on it. Is it just my lack of experience or know how? Great to see the shop coming together for and that your still not wearing sleeves. All the best and thanks again!

Yes, you did the 5 cut test wrong. If my geometry is correct, the way you switched sides, rather than cutting from the same side all 5 cuts, cancelled out the 4× multiplication that's the whole reason for the test. It looks you would have gotten the same results as the flip over test.

  • @JusBidniss

The '5 cut method' as I learned it long ago, was to put each new cut against the fence, so that the 5th cut is taken off of the side that the 1st establishing cut came off of. This multiplies any error over the 4 succeeding cuts, so that, for example, a 1 degree error becomes 4 degrees off. There's also a complex calculation that involves the fence pivoting on one screw and moving the other temporary screw to pull or push the fence into square, how long the fence is between those 2 screws, which end (left or right) the pivot screw is on, which side of the blade you're cutting the square, which determines which way you're rotating it through the 5 cuts, etc. But the bottom line is, the 5th cut should be cutting the same side as the 1st cut, and if the fence is not square to the blade, that last offcut piece will not have parallel cut edges. Which end of the piece is wider, tells you which way to move the fence.

  • @mildyproductive9726
    @mildyproductive9726 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, that is definitely not the right way to do Ng's 5 cut test.
The idea of the 5 cut test is to cut a piece of wood the most retarded way possible to magnify the error as much as possible.
To this effect, you must keep the stock on the same side of the blade, and put the edge you just cut against the fence for each successive cut. So you end up rotating the piece 90 degrees between each cut, always in the same direction of rotation.
I carefully watched what you did. If I am right, what you did is fine. But the last 3 cuts are all that mattered. And if you had done a 5 cut test, the resulting piece would show something like 2x as much error as the way you did it, meaning it will be a little more sensitive.
Yeah, I already know. I have no life. I don't even own a table saw.

What's the thickness of the plywood you are using Izzy? Any kind of play wood or do you stick with a certain one for your sleds? Thanks man! Keep inspiring it has brought me out of a lot of dark places! I'm a disabled Iraq veteran and until I found you on TH-cam I was fighting to want to even get up every day. The first video I saw of yours was your tablsaw jig for making bowls. I thought it was amazing how you came up with all these ideas. Needless to say, you inspired me to get up and do something. Now I live to work with lumber. Just wish I could afford some of the cool tools to make it easier, lol. Any way thanks for everything!!!!

but if you had been off on the 5cut, you would have ca glued and screwed your fence down, and you'd be stuck. just screw it down with two screws (no glue), do the 5cut, then sink the rest of the screws when your fence is true.

I like the way you did the sponsor promo, as an inset and voiceover, while continuing cutting pieces for your builds in the main screen. Unlike some others, I don't mind videos that talk about sponsors, since their support helps get me more Izzy content to watch. Also, cool table saw sled. For me, I'd prefer adding a block or something around the blade exit in the front fence, so I don't accidentally lay my thumb across it while pushing. But I'm absent-minded that way.... :)

Izzy, absolutely love your work, your builds, and especially your style. You have that quintessential midwestern get the job done sensibility I grew up with in Pontiac. I often miss it living on the west coast.
The ads in the builds just kill me though. I pay to have TH-cam ad free. I don’t mind and pay gladly. I also give as much patreon cash as I can afford. I know you believe in the products, but that’s not why I’m watching your videos.
    All my best.
