So, fun story about Conjure Animals...
Group of dwarves managed to make a large pitfall trap that caught the party. They fell in, the dwarves sealed the top so the party couldn't climb out and they began to pack up and leave. They knew they couldn't beat the party in a fight but were hired to kill them... so this was their plan.
Anyways, the wizard summoned 8 giant badgers, dug their way out, and the dwarves were demolished...

14:20 Another good version of Silvery Barbs: It works as usual, but enemies that are attuned to magic will notice the ripple in the weave, the change in probability. The target of the spell will also notice a sting in their head, as if they were just distracted by that caster over there. Since this player just spent their reaction, they can no longer use the shield spell. The player is vulnerable and the BBEG has their eye on the player now.

    On Find Familiar:
A level 2 artificer, using the Replicate Magic Item infusion, can create one level one spellwrought tattoo every day since it’s a common item. RAW, this can be any spell, meaning an artificer can give any party member a familiar (or revive said familiar), with no material component, once per day.

A Circle of the Shepherd Druid conjuring animals can summon 8 swarms of rats. Each swarm has increased AC and HP thanks to circle feature, but are also resistant to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. INCREDIBLY cool and thematic way to play. Loved being a grimy "rat-o-mancer". For bonus fun, wildshape into a swarm of rats next turn.
And yes, both RAW and RAI you can summon swarms of creatures if the CR is appropriate (triple checked before building this character).

My favorite reason to take glyph of warding, is scalability! The spell level you can store is only limited by however high you upcast glyph of warding, again going full duration without concentration. Imagine setting up hallow as a divine boobytrap, or plane shift as an automatic panic button, or true polymorph to cripple over any invader.
Suggestion exemplifies the fundamental, the more vague or open ended it is, the more exploitable it becomes!
A sidenote fix I find works fairly well for multisummon spells, is treat them like a hoard/mob, only 1 new entry to the initiative with stages of how many attacks it gets based on health; so simple I'm surprised wotc didn't consider it.
Silvery barbs is very breakable with arcane trickster rogues (moreso if they take the magic initiate feat for it), free sneak attack everytime an enemy would hit you. Oh yeah I agree it should've been a 2nd level spell, maybe 3rd given it can apply to any saving throw regardless if it's from a mundane or magical effect.

Note on Silvery barbs - Silvery barbs is a single target Enchantment spell, which means that when a School of Enchantment wizard hits level 10, they can target one additional creature with it, potentially forcing 2 enemies to reroll saves against that Fireball/Minute Meteors/Sleet Storm/up casted Hold (creature)/your choice of spell. Pair it with Aberrant Soul Sorcerer, and you have something ridiculous.

Note to DM's have players FIND Glyphs of "warding" with buff spells but the triggering conditions are very specific such as saying a pass phrase. This is a great way to reward players for exploration. These glyphs can also be used for:
    - Teleportation Circle to some place unknown
    - Reverse Gravity for certain puzzle rooms
    - Remove Curse / Dispel Magic / Lesser Restoration as a quest objective for players afflicted by disease/cure/etc
    - Find Familiar to gain a familiar even if you couldn't cast the spell
    - Instantly create a Leomund's Tiny Hut.
You can also have Glyphs be offensive against players in creative ways
    - Disguise Self to forcibly make a player appear like the enemy
    - Feign Death to seemingly kill a player but PLOT TWIST, they're alive. (combine with Invisibility + Levitate glyphs to make them seemingly disappear)
    - Gaseuous Form even on unwilling creatures.
    - Enlarge/reduce an unwilling creature
    - Reverse Gravity for some really devious traps
    - Fog Cloud can affect a massive area, a 3rd level spell affecting a 120ft wide sphere.
    - Summon Lesser/Greater demons to have combat encounters in tombs that have been sealed for centuries

I am playing a Shepard druid themed around Bears, so i made a deal with the DM to only summon Bears (2 with the spell) and it already is well worthy it. 8 probably slow the game to a crawl. On our party we got no tank so the bears kinda hold the baddies at bay from me and the wizard for a couple rounds.

  • @jeffgaston3238
    @jeffgaston3238 ปีที่แล้ว

So I play a Circle of the Shepherd druid and have used this spell in combat. You are correct in the fact that it can complicate combat adding 8 extra creatures to a fight. However, the way my group has played it is that the druid (me) is in charge of keeping track of my own summons. They are my creatures, I command them, I track HP. Second, I issue simple commands so that I can roll for 8 creatures very quickly. I only take up a few extra minutes on my turn so that I do not slow the combat too much.
However, I LOVE the idea of sharing the control of the creatures around the group. I think that makes for a very interesting dynamic and allows players that might be a bit shy or not as involved, the chance to really play a bigger role in combat.

I know the suggestion spell description includes the give-warhorse-to-beggar example. But that just tells us that WotC doesn't playtest, or even critically review, their own crap.
Under no circumstances is give-warhorse-to-beggar a "reasonable" suggestion.
That Yootoobers and players read that spell description and say to themselves, "yeah, that could be reasonable," even without being in the same universe as the character casting the suggestion spell, may indicate that 5e magic can penetrate the fourth wall.

The way I run Suggestion is that it's a way to remove random variables from planning. You can use it guarantee that someone does something they otherwise only _might_ do. Like ensuring that a guard takes a bathroom break at a certain time, or making someone take their whole family for a visit to the neighbours to ensure their house is empty.

One of the most game-breaking I have ever encountered was in 1st/2nd edition, and it might be in later editions, but I never played them. Squaring the Circle, a meta-magic spell that alters the area of effect of whatever spell you cast after it. Combining it with Fireball let my Wizard snipe sentries off of walls from FAR beyond maximum range for even a siege weapon, using a 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch by over a mile long cylinder of fire. Combining it with a spell that lets you pick the color of your spells allows the beam of fire to even be stealthy - for example, using very dark blue flames at night.

A great way to handle conjure animals, or any other mass summon effect in D&D, is to mechanically treat the group of creatures as one entity. Instead of 8 wolves with different initiatives, have the pack act on one initiative roll.

  • @charlesstephenson875
    @charlesstephenson875 ปีที่แล้ว

An idea we use at our table for conjure animals: the specific type of beasts you can summon is limited to your proficiency bonus. In other words, when a druid gets this spell at level 5 their proficiency bonus is 3 so they get to pick 3 animals types that they can summon with the spell. They could have giant owls, giant badgers, and giant wolf spiders for instance which would give them access to flying creatures, burrowing creatures, and creatures with spiderclimb. Or they could choose a creature who has pack tactics or a swim speed or whatever they want but once they make their choices they are stuck with just those creature choices until their proficiency goes up and they can select a new beast to add to their choices. This allows some choice that they can tailor to the situation at hand without giving them an overwhelming amount of choices. Also, to speed up combat we roll all the beasts attacks at once and make them act immediately after the summoner turn just like all the newest summoning spells and the Steel Defender do. Or we assign each party number a creature or two to control immediately after their turn of the summoner so wishes, and often he does. This makes the spell fun for the whole party and keeps the action economy even or fairly even between all party members.

The real problem with silvery barbs is game mechanism. What is a barb, and how does a barb force this effect? A saving throw is beyond the fourth wall. In game, the person resists the effect, and now the effect and the resistance is in the past. It isn't a "roll" that can be "rerolled." You can't call do over.
Well, you can.. but it takes a wish spell thru its "undo" effect. So, no, a first level spell cannot duplicate the effect of the 9th level wish.

  • @fadeleaf845

Other game breaking low level spells:
    1. Unseen Servant
Certainly, a familiar has special senses to help you with, can go indefinitely far away and requires no recasting if it stays alive. But Unseen Servant is another ritual spell that can do all those item handling things and also interact with traps. The upside? It's neither a creature nor an object, so pretty much nothing in the game can actually attack, let alone damage, an Unseen Servant. Also available through Magic Initiate or Ritual Caster.
    2. Shield
Just because a spell is incredibly basic doesn't mean it's not absurdly strong. For a very low level spell, you get a heavy boost to your AC for not just the attack you use it against, but also the rest of the round. Casters can usually dip one class level (or Hobgoblins/Bards taking Moderately Armored) to already get a substantial amount of AC out of the gate, which with the combination of Shield will make spellcasters immensely durable.
    3. Web
In the theme of the above, a simple spell can also be heavily potent. All targets in a sizable area must make a Dexterity Save or be stuck to the ground. The vast majority of monsters is primarily or exclusively focused on melee attacks, so having them unable to approach is basically an automatic win. You know how spells like Hold Person allow repeat saves at the end of each turn? Web kind of does, but not only do creatures have to burn an action to try and get out, it's a raw Strength check - no help from save proficiency, magic resistance, bless or anything. It's difficult terrain even for those making the save.
    4./5. Rope Trick/Tiny Hut
These spells are similar in functionality in ensuring a safe short or long rest respectively in most places. Camping around the place and trying to disrupt the party is deceptively difficult without the ability to dispel it, as any of the caster's allies can shoot at the interlopers with impunity. Rope Trick is also a one action spell - while it's unlikely to win a combat by itself (since you can't pursue a retreating enemy from there), it will definitely lead to easy stalemates. Tiny Hut is far easier to hop in and out of for allies, meaning that Arcane Abeyance from the Chronurgist can turn it into a really unfair impervious bunker you can drop mid-combat.

A potential video: Ring of Spell Storing let's you hand out Find Familiar to anyone, as a level 1 wizard. If you have the money, you can give every citizen of a town Familiars.
The town now has extra help for work, extra sentries to protect alert for ambush attacks, plus it would be cool. Imagine a society that owns a communal ring of spell storing, and trains a couple low level wizards around town, and at age ten you get your own Familiar. A cultural cornerstone of the city

So the way I’ve always run conjure animals is that there is a spellcasting check involved (so not hard) to choose the creatures. My druid has only ever failed it once and I just glanced through the CR 1/4 creatures and decided on giant badgers, because why not. Well, in my haste to pick something I failed to realize that giant badgers have multi attack and decent damage for the CR, and playing with variant flanking rules… well, I think you can imagine the rest. The giant badger blender has become a bit of a staple in that game (not that bad though because I run pretty difficult combats as they’re all pretty experienced players)

I've got a wizard player who made friends with an imp and eventually recruited it as a familiar, the warlock took Pact of the Chain, the paladin was gifted a familiar/steed for his services. I'm currently trying to figure out how to give the bard one too xD

Did the math a while ago about how far you could push the glyph of warding trick and its insane. So you have to essentially use 2 spell slots of whatever level of spell you want to put into the glyph, so the highest you can get with it is 6th level spells at 19th level. you could do 7th level at 20th level, but it kinda removes the "Break glass in case of emergency" part as the genie vessel is the only way in know that would allow you to enter and exit on same turn unless your DM is cool with you crawling in and out of bag of holding in a single turn easy enough. but even if you just use 6th level spells, the list of spells you can stack on yourself is absolutely absurd. a level 19th bladesinger that has things like; Haste, Greater Inv, stoneskin, fizbans platinum Shield, Tenser's Transformation, Investiture of Wind, Elemental weapon, enlarge, intellect fortress, bless (can get through a couple feats), true seeing, fire shield, Armor of Agathys upcasted, and a few others and you could become just an absolute Titan on a battlefield for 1 minute and would have advantage on all mental saving throws and could have proficiency in all 3. I did the math, and obviously dice gods arent always on your side, but you'd have a good chance to solo ANY creature/demi god/demonlord in the monster manual or DMG

I consider the bag of holding or bottle respite thing to be a technicality that was not intended to interact this way with Glyph of Warding. It creates a broken imbalance that can't be corrected. I'd argue rules as intended would be that moving the object moves the glyph, or that removing the object from the space counts as moving it much, much further and thus nullifies it.

Which means while it is your turn, you can only cast one spell that requires a spell slot. If that save was a success, some other magic user would need to use their reaction to cast Silvery Barbs. But then again, that spell is still vastly broken. Turning an advantage into disadvantage is something that usually isn't possible, as multiple instances of both just cancel each other out. So Silvery Barbs shouldn't be useable on any throw made with advantage in the first place.

As a druid player myself, I roll all conjured animals at once. Say you have 4 creatures, roll 4d20 on your turn, and any that hit do say 1d8, so roll xd8 for one big hit to a target.

Bruh can we talk about Friends, the enchantment cantrip, which literally states, "For the duration, you have advantage on all Charisma
checks directed at one creature of your choice that isn’t hostile toward you. When the spell ends, the creature realizes that you used magic to influence its mood
and becomes hostile toward you" there is no range of the creature you can choose, so theoretically, you can choose Asmodeus as the target, and make him mad at you for the rest of the campaign lol.

I played a circle of shep. druid to level 20. I knew the potential of Conjure Animals to break the game so my DM and I discussed its power and came to a gentlemanly agreement, I only used it in combat once or twice (around level 7 or 8) I used a pack of wolves to arrest a fleeing NPC with important info and spawned 8 giant owls giving each other and allies flanking advantage and each making attacks. It felt great as a PC but slowed down the game. Ultimately, I agreed to reserved that summon spell to fly the party across the world and the DM worked with that to give us tons of great air combat encounters. Really hope they don't kill multiple creature summons in One Dnd

Ok, so, TODAY, DMing journey through the radiant citadel, the support-focused bard carried HARD with just a simple level 1 sleep. First combat, two perytons, CAST SLEEP, 12d6 damage (halved because the ground is not magic) to the first, while the second one got into an epic fight with the aaracokra monk. Second encounter he used it was a stealth mission. The bard is a changeling and he's certainly not... good. He got into some granma's house, who they wanted dead for reasons, took the form of someone they ALSO wanted dead, cast sleep, instant ko, carried her to her f*cking balcony and then stabbed her in plain view of the public, killing two birds with one stone. Setting aside the fact that they murderhobo'd right to the 3rd adventure SLEEP IS STUPID GOOD!

Peryton: Damage Resistances: bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks.
Just to be clear, resistance or immunity to bludgeoning from attacks or from weapon attacks does not help with fall damage.
      Jeremy Crawford tweeted:
Q: A monster is immune to damage from nonmagical bludgeoning weapons. Does he still take damage from falling?
A: Yep, that monster is still going to feel the hurt of a fall.
So... You actually did more to that peryton. Took the full 12d6. Just letting you know for future uses.

Re Concentration, as DM I wouldn't allow most spells to take or maintain effect cross-planar, so if origin point is in a Bag of Holding then it will only have effect within the bag.
Silvery Barbs should simply be restricted to its origin campaign setting, Strixhaven, where obviously magic > martial.

  • @torvus249

No mention of Tasha's Mind Whip? INT is a very uncommon saving throw proficiency for monsters to have, and it breaks the action economy: the target can't take reactions, and can either move, action, or bonus action on their turn, and upcasting lets it target more creatures.

  • @meowsquared

In my last campaign I kept objects enchanted by glyph of warding in my bag of holding, which allowed me to whip out all manners of spells on command. Since my DM allowed it and I didn't wanna inconvenience her, I limited myself so that extracting and using a glyphed item cost an action, and I could only have 1 concentration effect on myself at a time. It more or less leveled out to being a strong, but somewhat reasonable happy medium in the campaign.

Rules as written for conjure animals says the DM picks the animals. I would argue with any DM that said that. The example would be polymorph doesn't tell you the level that you turn the creature into. So you cast it on a friend and now they're a mouse you cast it on the enemy and now they're a a T-Rex. The game is made so the players have control over their own spells. And just because the spell doesn't say who controls doesn't mean it's not the players.

So I had the idea of storing verbal components on a magic mouth. (Long story, my character is perpetually mute and speaks his verbal components through a familiar (not RAW I know, but it was a novel character idea and ya know otherwise I'd be a spellcaster who can't cast spells)) as a kind of backup. But that can't actually be done cause you yourself need to be the one speaking the verbal component
So magic mouth can create the Internet in the dark ages...but can't be used as a bad tape recorder.

This is how busted a combination of Conjure Animals + Twilight Sanctuary + Spirit Guardians can be.
Rime game made up of the following characters: Circle of Stars Druid 7, Abjuration Wizard 7, Twilight Cleric 7 w/ Resilient Con (important), Wild Magic Barbarian 7, Fey Wander Ranger 5/Archfey Warlock 2.
7 Blue Slaad (CR 7 creatures against the party).
Druid conjures animals turn 1, Cleric puts up Twilght Sanc and Spiritual Weapon on turn 1, party is able to limit Slaads to maximum of 2 getting to the party at one time. Turn 2, Cleric puts up Spirit Guardians. Barbarian and Cleric act as tanks for any Slaad that gets past the conjured animals (those Slaad that do are focused down) and Cleric is able to make concentration checks.
Outcome, all 7 Slaad dead before Twilight Sanc runs out. Only one conjure animal makes it to the end. Couple character have max health dropped until long rest, but most any one character loses is 20 max health till then. No character actually goes down during the fight (and no healing was done during the fight).

Suggestion has to sound reasonable to the target, but "sound reasonable" very much depends on what the target and situation is. Even if they fail the save, an obviously more powerful enemy that is at an advantage (party at low health, lots of backup, ect) isn't likely to find the idea of running away reasonable. Same with something that really, really wants to dead - not killing you probably wouldn't sound reasonable.

Regarding Silvery Barbs: "No one is ever gonna crit" is just the DM's fault. Ever since I got players using Silvery bards I first announce "the attack hits", wait a second or two, and then announce if its a crit or not. My players know that in these few seconds they either intervene with silvery barbs or have to pass on it.
I also do the same with smite and crits. If my players wants to use smite he has to announce it before the roll, then roll. Using smite only on crits is boring min-max-powerplay.
Guess thats not for everyone but at least for my party these changes made the game more fun for everyone.

  • @Kiljaedenas
    @Kiljaedenas ปีที่แล้ว

Eh...a clever DM can counter a bunch of those.
    1) Glyphs of Warding stored in a warlock genie vessel, the warlock can only enter into that vessel once a day. Okay, sure, they use it in a fight. Hit them with another fight soon after, boom. done. As for the bag of holding, it takes one action to draw one glyph-set item out of the bag. They'd have to park themselves in place doing this for multiple rounds to get all of the buffs, meanwhile the enemies can be thrashing them or their allies while they're wasting time.
    2) Wasting your Concentration on one single enemy when a buddy of theirs can smack them or you to end it is a terrible idea. No good DM sends only a single enemy at you at a time. Suggestion is no where near as powerful as you have stated.
    3) The animals rolling for initiative, that only starts in the following round. All of the existing enemies that have not yet moved get to move before the summoned animals. and the DM can simply have any ranged enemies shoot the caster. One failed concentration save, poof. Animals go bye bye. Yes it can definitely slow down a game, but this isn't as overpowered as you say.
    4) Silvery Barbs affects one single move, and one single ally advantage roll. Burning a spellslot for that compared to what else you could fire with that spell slot is costly, especially given most of the spellcasters (aside from Warlock) regain their slots typically only once per day, barring special skills. In a multiple-combat-per-day campaign, the players will gas their spells out doing this. Also for your skill-check buff you mentioned, the wording in the rulebook of a creature you can see does not mean yourself since you can't see yourself in full, so you can't silvery-barb yourself nor can you take a Reaction on your own move; you can only ever React to someone else's action, so that entire skill buff line is pure nonsense. Not an issue.
    5) Your particular find familiar combo of a cloaked familiar using healing potions, the instant the liquid leaves the bottle the enemy will see it coming out of thin air and can attack that spot, hitting the imp. I've seen this before, easy to deal with. Find Familiar is not as powerful as it sounds.
