Such a shame that this film did so poorly. These are some of the most interesting shoot outs and chase scenes I've seen. It's like a breath of fresh air from the fast paced and ridiculous chase scenes of today to see such a slow and meticulous one.

By this era, car chases were so routine, it took this kind of ingenuity to make a chase scene engaging again. Mostly, there's just a trend towards making them bigger and louder, but it's this kind of writing and staging that really makes car chases exciting again.

In my opinion I believe the scene where Parker tells Longbaugh to wait a second while he goes over to Diggs and aims his gun at him while he and his partner are still buckled up in the wrecked car does a couple of things to make the situation a lot more believable. The main reason, in my opinion was a tactical one. Before Parker heard the police sirens and left them both, I believe that he was going to shoot them both to avoid them following them and re-taking the girl which would of obviously made the storyline practically pointless from that point on.
However, when he heard the police sirens, he stopped and got back into the truck because he realised that if he would've shot them the police would be looking for murderers, so the police's search efforts for them would be huge and if caught would likely face the death penalty if they were taken alive of course but by leaving them to leaving them to deal with the police, he thought that this would be the last the pair saw of the bodyguards, so by leaving them not only did they increase their chances but also avoided certain death.
I'd like to ask a question though, are they ever alluded to be ex special forces or at least some kind of ex armed forces? I know there tactics, room clearing procedures and gun handling skills are hallmarks but I was wondering if there's ever any sort of off hand comment or something along those lines? I don't remember as all. :)

McQuarrie has done something here that hadn’t been done in 20 years. He brought something unique to the classic action trope of car chases by giving us the first low speed pursuit while maintaining edge-of-the-seat intensity.
Such a shame McQuarrie so vehemently distances himself from the movie to the point of outright disowning it as if a preemptive stance if people ever want to “cancel” him for opening scene with Sarah Silverman (she, too, absolutely does not talk about her role) and the Ryan Phillipe monologue about “faggots and nomads.”

There are other similarities but the music at 2.05 was a nice nod to the chase scene in the first Terminator. (where Sarah bites John's hand). WotG is a fantastic film but it forgot to be efficient. This is what made the first Terminator so rewatchable. This efficiency difference is is perhaps the largest standout in quality between T1 and T2 - if one has to choose a desert island Terminator film.
