    This worked for us. We did the top hinge, then the bottom, then the top again, to get it where we wanted it.

    where can I buy the plastic shim from?

  • @thomasjones-yc8lf

    Excellent! I wasn't sure if it was what your describing. There are these smaller allen bolts in back that look like they might provide finer adjustments but I think you confirmed my problem because it was fine when it was first installed (2001). Thanks!

    • @ExceptionalGlassLLC
      @ExceptionalGlassLLC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thomas!
      Those smaller Allen keys hold the Hinge onto the Pivot within the plate. Loosing them may create an issue later on with knocking sounds. Tightening them will prolong the life of your Hinge.
      Thanks for your comment!

    The trick is cutting shims to fill the gaps, use the thick gaskets, and tighten the crap out of the hinges. Lock tight on the screws won’t hurt neither

  • @MrRVRclubprez
    @MrRVRclubprez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is how I have always done, as well as shimming between glass and top of hinge, so glass weight is on the hinge, and the glass can't move down. If shimmed properly, the hinges can be loose, yet the glass will not move out of adjustment. Shim the bottom hinge on top and the front so glass can't move toward wall.

    I’m getting ready to to install a GW 90 deg enclosure and definitely going to do this right off the start, so thanks for tip. Also what is the recommended silicone for inside corner? Looks like water clear very expensive and not mildew resistant according to CL website. What is your recommendation? Thank you

  • @WellActualllyyy

    what kind of shim is that?

    @colina6038 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what size shim it typically used?

  • @sylviaelse5086
    @sylviaelse5086 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The hinge at the top of the door wants to pull out, but the hinge at the bottom of the door wants to push in, so the shims would have to be positioned accordingly.
    Mind you, mine doesn't even have the protrusions in the hinge to shim against. The primary function of the curved cut-outs in the glass is stress relief to prevent cracking.

    • @ExceptionalGlassLLC
      @ExceptionalGlassLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The primary function of the curved cutouts is a safety feature to never allow the door to completely slip out of the hinge. Not for stress relief. Glass does not expand unless under "tempering" conditions.

    Hi I have a question do you know why my shower door similar to this one makes a loud cracking noise from the hinge when you open it all the way like this? Thanks in advance

    • @ExceptionalGlassLLC
      @ExceptionalGlassLLC  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Hugo.
      Usually the recommendation is to replace a clicking hinge.
      But before you do, re-tighten the screws. The ones on the wall and holding glass.
      If it still clicks, there are 2 very small holes in the back of the hinge (when door is open). Inside are small set screws. Loosen half turn, then tighten right with a little strength.
      You should notice the sound either gets louder, softer or disappears entirely.
      If it still clicks, replace the hinge.
      I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    My gaskets are failing-- there are cracks along some edges and the gasket is getting 'squeezed" outside of the footprint of the hinge. I have retighten them to no success(multiple times). I got an estimate from a shower glass company who wants to charge $400 to replace the hinges OR $2000 to replace the glass and the hinges. We live in Maryland(outside of Washington DC)--- But I think the quote is on the pricey side. Should I replace the hinges(with new gaskets). Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    • @ExceptionalGlassLLC
      @ExceptionalGlassLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the $400 is fair to replace hinges and labor.
      If you wanted to do it yourself, you can purchase the gaskets online amzn.to/3WoGDBQ.

    So you left a clear shim there, the problem is fixed until you screw the other side up though?

    • @ExceptionalGlassLLC

      The shim stays. The hinge must be clamped to complete the installation.

    My glass door squeaks how do I get rid of the sound?

    • @ExceptionalGlassLLC
      @ExceptionalGlassLLC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Find the place where it squeaks.
      If it's on the bottom, The door may have sagged and needs to be adjusted up.
      If it's the rollers, take the door off, clean the roller seams and reattach.
      This may help.

    I wouldn't call it a 'mistake' to not stick spacers in that exact spot, it's not actually a requirement for a proper installation, simply an extra precaution to prevent sag over time.
