    As always, a complete practical solar energy analysis. Numbers don't lie unless you fudge them... or don't use a Kill a Watt Meter. Thanks Steve. You are one awesome dude for helping us newbies get the edge on using solar power.

    Miss my Haeir!!! Could not take with me on a long distance move. Am in the market for a washer and dryer. This one does not do full size comforters or blankets, but I have discovered Fisher&Paykel makes front loaders, sizes larger enough to do my bedding. This company owned by Haier and so far excellent reviews. The newer market frontloaders people forget to take out the transport bolts, or find the 'catcher' to clean the scum or take a five minute wipe from inside the drum and window...paid about $250 online brand new for my machine about ten years ago. And the same machine you have is currently about the same price. Excellent purchase!!

    Hello Steve I happened to stumble on your channel, and I'm glad I did. I always enjoy and appreciate people who have a passion for green power and helping others. Its the way its suppose to be. Anyway its hard to be patient with myself in regards to solar and how to do it correctly. And doing it where I get the best bang for my buck. Any suggestions for learning in baby steps would be appreciated, this is a new adventure for me. I will be picking thru your vids for knowledge. Thanks Pete in Wisconsin

    That's a great review. Washer is a no-brainer for traveling. The dryer could be fine if you had a lot of sun, or a lot of batteries for your inverter. But I guess if you have a lot of sun then drying on a clothes line would work and use 0 KWH.

    Thanks for the review. I've had that model for a year and love it. Using it in my travel trailer that I live in full time. I also found mine on Craig's List. You got a fantastic deal on yours! I just hang my clothes up to dry, but if I was off grid and using solar panels, then it wouldn't matter if I used the dryer since I wouldn't be paying an electric bill. : )

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Bolletta I have a heatpump that I love, made by Senville and is SEER 21 rated. When it first starts, it pulls as much as 1200 watts, but as it reaches the temperature you have set, it throttles back to about 200 watts to maintain the temperature. It's both a great air conditioner and heater. In winter, I load an armload of firewood into the woodstove to get the chill out of the house, and after the sun comes up, my Senville keeps the house toasty from solar electricity. At night before we retire, I load another armload of wood into the woodstove to keep the house warm at night. In the summer, it cools the house down nicely.
      I bought it here: www.ebay.com/itm/Ductless-Air-Conditioner-Mini-Split-Heat-Pump-18000-BTU-Energy-Star-21-SEER-/191314675810?hash=item2c8b3e4862:g:KjIAAOSwyQtVntxq

    So in other words, use the washer to wash and hang-dry the clothes. Thanks for a very simple, no-nonsense video. If I may make a suggestion, use it for a year and then do a follow-up video talking about how it runs after that time. I know you bought it used, but some data is better than none.

      I bought my Haier in 2005 and it still works perfectly in 2017. Not for off-grid, just for cost savings as my laundromat adds up to about $10-15 to do a few loads of laundry. Same size as Steve's, just doesn't have the digital lights. Model XQBM22-C. I think they are an amazing company for portable washers. I also find that the spin cycle really does an amazing job of removing most of the moisture from the clothes, do they can easily dry fast just by hanging. One tip, use very little amounts of detergent, or else you be running the rinse cycle more than once to get the suds out. For a full load I find about a 2 tablespoon worth is fine. Also, don't overload. Easier to just do 2-3 smaller loads if you have lots of laundry.

    Excellent tutorial, learned a lot about watts, kilowatts and kilowatt hours. You have the skills of a teacher, taking complicated concepts for 'some of us, breaking them down, repackaging them into mental & tangible understanding. Your use of visual examples and images would get you A+s in Education Methods Coursework.

      I actually viewed a couple of your other videos and 'though 'my brain didn't 'catch on to some of the higher concepts you were discussing, from the comments others made, it was clear individuals with high mathematical skills and high interest in 'off-the-grid living were. Even 'watching those videos, I was still impressed with your ability to communicate in a captivating, charismatic manner. That I'm looking for a compact laundry system for my "new" tiny apartment 'was how I 'bumped into your "Off-Grid Living".
      Today, I reviewed some TH-cam Videos on making money through TH-cam and was amazed at some of the people 'who are making money: 'they're so boring or ridiculous.
      I think if you're doing that and people bump into you by way of one of your off-shoot videos, like the one on Haier Compact Clothes Washer, you'll pick up viewers 'simply because you're interesting and 'have that 'charismatic component to your delivery.
      As you've probably guessed I 'was a teacher (and, once a teacher, always a teacher); but then I gravitated toward MH 'when I became a single parent (ever wonder why 'teacher's kids become mass murderers??? It's 'cause the parents pay more attention to 'their students--just to keep their jobs--than to their own kids--I didn't want to do that)--and, 'tend to zero in on 'talent, skill(s), or budding aptitude and 'have this impetus to 'encourage.
      I think your videos are going to expend and your viewership is going to increase.

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eliza beth I did guess you were a teacher, and you have humbled me with your kind words that came at a good time. Thanks again, and welcome to us off-gridders' community if you're inclined to learn about it.

    • @annami6314
      @annami6314 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very inclined and have been interested for years. I live in a "green high rise" and do everything I can to reduce my electrical use, including unplugging everything after use and switching the current off at the fuse box for lights and utilities I'm not using. I'm currently working, obviously, on how to reduce my imprint in the area of laundry communicating what I learn to others who live here. Many have already started unplugging any electrical device when not in use and now they're intently interested in how to do their laundry, where it costs upwards of $30.00 & $40.00 to do laundry on site (a big money maker for company).
      So, I have a question, our heating & cooling system is regulated by two sources, one, a ceiling unit in the bedroom and a very complicated computerized thermostat (and fan unit) in the living area which extends to the kitchen. I live 'boxed in-between other units who like their apartments warm to extremely warm; I tend to prefer layering 'rather than keeping my actual temperature 'what others would consider comfortable. When I'm not using the heat or cooling, I switch the fuse off--it uncomplicates the computerized system in the living area--
      and, for the most part I keep my apt. regulated by heat rising from the floors below and the people who live on either side of me. I've only used the oven once (Thanksgiving) a purchased an extremely energy efficient toaster over, which I use maybe 3xs a week and utilize the microwave for other types of cooking.
      When I breakdown my electrical bill, I'm only spending about $10.00/mo on actual electrical use, the rest of my bill comprises fees and taxes. In November, just from one day of using the oven, my actual electrical use jumped $15.00.
      So, my question for you is, does turning my heat/cooling (and dishwasher) off at the fuse box (when not in use) reduce wattage?
      BTW, neighbors are flabbergasted by my low electrical bills. I tell them to layer, unplug items not in use, turn off those outlets that have little switches on them (and switch them back on only when they use the actual outlet-- 'because they draw electricity 'by just being on).
      I grew up in the country, so city living has been a huge adjustment for me; but 'even in an apartment it's amazing how frugally one live. Even though my father was a dentist and could have afforded 'to pay for everything out of pocket, he, having grown up in the foothills of VT, always chose to 'everything the 'hard way (as I called it as a kid), we got our water from one of those underground springs (delicious), retained it in huge covered cow's water trough, wood heated our house and drew it into the house through gravity.
      I thought I hated it as a child because it made 'extra work, chopping and stacking wood, diy porches and cement slabs, flower beds, gardens (organic way back then, which was more work than a regular garden)--and, I always called him "eccentric" 'growing up, but growing up with my father's diy and live off the grid life-style (as much as possible) 'has served me well in my life, a single parent and wage earner, I had to cut corners at every bend--and, the 'resourcefulness it taught me, 'turned me into a diy mom.
      My kids (girls), of course, 'were embarrassed by their mom, but they're now in the 30's and each one, though very well off, 'cut corners, watch their electrical use and employ diy strategies where possible to cut down on their carbon foot print.
      Despite 'where I live, I find it a challenge and rewarding 'to live mindfully of how I'm personally impacting the environment--and, I hate throwing my money away on corporations who have legislated predatory methods of extracting our money.

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eliza beth turning your appliances off at the fuse box will definitely keep them from drawing any electricity, but most modern day appliances use little to no phantom (or quiescent) electricity. I have a heat pump in my home that is computerized - very efficient. But when the outdoor temperature drops below about 20 degrees, it turns on a strip heater in the compressor that draws about 200 watts, so I just installed a wall switch. Now I can turn it off completely when it's not in use.
      If you bill runs less than $10.00 per month before sales, ACA, carbon, and other taxes they can think of, I would say you are the most frugal city dweller I know! You have my respect and you should be very proud for your lifestyle. There are few people who are willing to do what you do.
      Cheers!

    Great review. I am looking at different models. All seem just a bit too big. I like that this one is smaller. Since you have used it and put it into a vehicle. do you think it's small enough to go into either the back seat of a car or trunk for transport? I currently drive a Toyota Corolla. I would need to be able to move one around if I had to.

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +April Baker It would fit, but the pump at the bottom retains water. If you put it in the back seat of your car, I would caution you about that water leaking out when you lay it into the back seat.

    Do you find that your clothes or towels are tangled up at the end of the wash making them hard to remove from the washer? I am thinking of purchasing one as I cannot use my Aptartment common laundry due to the fragranced smells in the machines. Thank you.

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Deborah Anne Most washers have a center agitator that goes up the center of the wash tub. This model doesn't have that. So I think the combination of no center agitator with smaller loads pretty much eliminated that problem. I haven't had my clothes get tangled at all - except maybe a belt from a robe or something that's very long like that. As you can see, it doesn't take much space either. I continue to be very pleased with mine!

    How many watts and amps does this dryer have?
    what does this dryer measure in inches?
    I wonder if this model is the same as the 141E

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dryer averages 1300 watts over it's cycle. I don't remember the exact size of that dryer, but approximately 24" tall by 20 inches wide by 14 inches deep.

  • @deborahanne9793

    Thank you for your comments on the washer Steve, does the attachment to the kitchen or bathroom tap work with an adapter for the tap that is used for a portable dishwasher to be used?

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Deborah Anne You're very welcome! I bought mine used so there were no adapters with it, and I don't know if a new one comes with any adapters. It has a standard hose that screws onto a faucet. I purchased an adapter at the hardware store, and I apologize I can't remember what I paid for it. It is an adapter that will fit various faucet types.

    • @deborahanne9793
      @deborahanne9793 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your reply. I am buying my used as well. So if I understand you correctly, the kitchen sink needs to be about to screw onto the faucet or does it also have the option of pulling the hose attachment down and it pops up to secure to the faucet?

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Deborah Anne The adapter replaces the aerator in your kitchen (or bathroom) faucet, so when you run the faucet, the water just runs out without that nice aeration we're used to. The hose then just screws onto the adapter. When you leave your apartment, simply remove the adapter and put the aerator back in. No one will ever know you were there. Although not the most graceful video ever, here's a fellow that shows what the adapter looks like: th-cam.com/video/0ZIt3etY9Zs/w-d-xo.html

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Deborah Anne I will say that one VERY rare issue I have had is the drain hose falling out of the sink. I would suggest finding a large rubber band or bungee cord to maybe hold the drain hose to the sink. I'm sure you can figure out something simple to make it a little more secure, but I did want to make you aware of it to help prevent a mopping job one day.

      Thanks Steve, I saw where someone actually put about one inch of the drain hose down the sink, I am not sure if this is a solution , I will try one time and see how that works. I also saw where, they must be the newer models, come with a gooseneck that the drain hose in slipped into and this hangs over the sink ledge to keep it secure. I may check a hardware store to see about a gooseneck to use.

    Hey Steve,
    I am trying to hook my Haier Washing machine up to use again! I replaced my hose on the machine-new hose , but the water is coming out of the machine from the bottom. I am assuming that something is not hooked up properly under the bottom of the machine please give me some advice. I have attempted to turn machine upside down and a black rubber part is not hooked up right-help me out please.

      Without me physically being there, I doubt there's much I can do for you. At this point I would suggest calling on someone in your church family with some general skills. Aside from that, paying someone to reattach the part is the only other option. Are you located in Colorado?

      I'm sure if someone comes along and reads your post that knows, they'll let us both know about a gas powered washer. I know about them, but I've never even seen one.

    How many gallons of water does the wash machine utilize

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It uses 5-15 gallons of water per wash, depending on the load size. A front load washer is still a bit more efficient.

    I live off-grid. Have plenty of juice to run anything (2000 watt array), however, no well. How much water does it use on a cycle? :) - Cloud

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the size of load but my guess is total 7.5 gallons for a full load.

    How do I drain the stored water inside it? I have been using this for 2 years now and it's heavier to move around. It sounds like there's water inside it not in the place where we put clothes in, that part gets drained. But water is in inside the machine and I don't know how to take it out. It's making moving the machine around really hard. Can anyone please help? Thank you

    • @OffGridLivingReally
      @OffGridLivingReally 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only place in the washer that water isn't completely pumped out is the pump housing itself. That would hold perhaps a pint to a quart of water. The washer is pretty heavy by itself, and if there is any water still in the tub, you could let the drain hose down all the way to the ground while tilting the washer to let out any remaining water. Unless your washer is stored in a place where it could freeze, it should never be a problem.

    How loud is this machine during the wash and dry cycle? I bought a Giantex; it is incredibly loud during the wash cycle.

    • @OffGridLivingSteve
      @OffGridLivingSteve  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I don't know how loud a Giantex is, I don't really have a baseline to work with you from. But I can say that's it's not quite as loud as a full size upright washer, and maybe slightly louder than a full size front load washer.

    • @kjaques1
      @kjaques1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the bearing they shouldnr be that loud. If you buy a cheap campermat for a few dollars you can site the washer on it and reduce the vibration no end.

    Hi, I know it's been a few years since you posted these but I'm still hoping I can gain some insights. I see you turned the faucet on in this video even before you turned on the machine. Is the water running at this time? If so where? The problem with my machine is that when I turn on the faucet, the water will try to flow into the machine even though the machine stops accepting water in the non-fill cycles. I don't know if the problem is with my machine for not being able to control the on/off flow of water from the faucet or if my faucet should not be feeding water during non-fill cycles.

    • @OffGridLivingReally
      @OffGridLivingReally 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christine Li hello Christine. I believe that the problem is with the valve in your washer. It is probably stuck open so it can't turn off. I don't think it should be a costly repair.

    • @Krysnth
      @Krysnth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So is the water running into your machine when it's turned off?

    • @OffGridLivingReally
      @OffGridLivingReally 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christine Li No.

    • @Krysnth
      @Krysnth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, that's interesting. Then is water still running from the faucet? If so, where is it going if not into the machine? I'm just trying to figure out if the machine is supposed to be controlling the on/off of the faucet once you turn the faucet on.

    • @OffGridLivingReally
      @OffGridLivingReally 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christine Li the water faucet can be left on. The washer turns the water on and off for itself as required.

    If watts equals amps multiplied by voltage... then a 6 amp appliance run on 120 volt AC... is 720 watts... not 600.

      You have a warped sense of perception if you assume that is the only reason someone offers a correction.
      And a 20% difference isn't a little mistake.

      You can go to Home Depot or Lowes, and they sell a pack of adapters in a package that will fit virtually any faucet.

    Info for all... I noticed how much detergent you put in that little machine and here is some info. the detergent companies are in the business of selling product,,,,, the quantity of detergent listed on the container is the maximum amount that can be used before the product causes issues NOT the minimum amount that can be used to get a good clean ! as I said they want you to use lots of product so you buy more buy more buy more.... I have found using less than a quarter of recommended listed amount works just fine. Also fabric softeners are a crock they DON'T WORK! check out the research online it's a giant misconception a con and just shows how gullible humans are.
