Prannoy & Radhika Roy & the world of news this week on

  • The biggest news media story of the year gone by is Prannoy and Radhika Roy walking away from NDTV as the new owner, the Adani Group, walked in. In this week's #NationalInterest, ThePrint Editor-in- Chief Shekhar Gupta talks about Roys' dignified parting note -- which is a fine insight into how they’ve approached their journalism. In the highly-strung world of news television, their calm is a rarity.

Honestly it was PRANNOY ROY who dragged us to the TV for his fantastic once a week programme on Friday Night.. THE WORLD THIS WEEK..literally taught us about the ELECTIONS and analysis...and helped us to know or rather enlightened us.. and sir your Walk The Talk.. I am grateful for Prannoy for introducing me to English news and that classy English. Over my formative years, I was a huge fan of shows like The Big Fight, We The People, Walk the Talk, and of course, the election coverage.
I think one failing of NDTV is not accommodating the views of Hindu conservatives. Many of their personalities showed contempt (e.g. Barkha, Rajdeep, Nidhi), which distanced the conservatives from the channel, and make them find their “own” channels like Times Now and Republic TV.

NDTV started out really well with a decent and insightful analysis and reporting. I personally liked their breakfast news, and NDTV is the reason I got introduced to politics. However, not sure what happened, but later it veered towards left and become to pro-Congress. Balance between different ideologies was lost, and discussions became one sided. News anchors, instead of playing a role of a facilitator in a debate, acted like Congress and Left spokesperson. Some journalists developed a larger than life kind of personality which made then think they control the country. I think that's where NDTV lost its credibility.

The first time I saw Prannoy Roy on TV was in 1987 when he used to telecast a programme in Doordarshan ' The World this week' in 1987 on Fridays. But he became my favkirite when I watched him as a Psephelogist analyzing the elections with a commentary. The noteworthy point about him as a TV presenter is his calm and unemotional way of approach to topics in a soft ,soothing manner. He was even calm and firm while questioning the most difficult politicians. He never showed irritation or anger or frustration while doing with politicians.
NDTV virtually remained an island of calm under him in an otherwise tempestuous ,noisy, cantankerous sea of Indian TV world.
I doubt whether even a so-called monk in his full religious attire and marks can maintain such composure.
NDTV as a TV channel nay have gone out of his hands but he will be cherished by a certain set of people forever.
We hope he would appear amid us soon. He is an institution in himself and his legacy cannot be allowed to ve lost so easily.
    Come back,Pronnoy.
