- When city infrastructure reaches home divisions that were once on a septic system we are able to connect the sewage line to city sewer.

We just paid so much for septic abandonment and city sewer connection I some what saw how the work was being done it took like 7 hours but I wanted to see exactly how this helped so much I remember them telling me now we gotta fill your septic tank with sand I was like okay... great video

Does city/plumber company charge by foot or is the homeowner allowed to dig the trench or supplement any costs?
We have to make this decision soon as well. Base charge of $5,800 + whatever the plumbers charge. Drainfield is clogged and it'll cost $7000 to replace it. Figured might as well choose city sewer over replacing a 50 year old Drainfield

Thank you for putting this video up, it was very informative as I will need to get this done to one of my houses in the near future. When the city comes in and offers city sewer to the residents, and the previous residents decline and opt to keep their septic tank.... does the city still add a connection point for the opportunity to tie into city sewer in the future? Or does this differ from each city? I have tried to map this out before, the closest manhole cover is on the other side of my street... If that is where it needs to be tied into that would require ripping up 3 lanes of traffic....
Hi Austin, normally everyone on the block would have to agree to the sewer for the municipality to create the sewer infrastructure. Not always the case, but this is what I have seen. If the majority of residents want sewer infrastructure and there is only one or two homes that don't want to connect, the municipality still draws the sewer connection to the property line. When it comes to tying into the sewer, in most jurisdictions you will not be allowed to go through the roadway, the city has to bring the sewer connection to the home.
This whole process was/is very confusing to me. I’m in the county but have access to city sewer. I have the same situation where the manhole cover is on the other side of the street. I called the city and they confirmed that I could connect if I wanted, but I’d have to get someone to bore under the road to make the connection. They said I couldn’t cut the road. I don’t know who I would contact first or how to get the ball rolling. Do I need to submit an application to someone? Can you contract any plumber (if capable) to tie in to the sewer? I guess most plumbers would know or know someone who would know. All I know is, it all sounds really expensive!
where the pipe goes into the sewer tap... is there a special fitting to go into the tap or does the 4" just push into it?
There is normally a flange that you push the 4" pipe into, sometimes we make our own adaptation to connect.

What made you change from septic to city sewer?
Often when developments and infrastructure reach areas that were predominantly on septic, homeowners then have the opportunity to tie in to city sewer. This is beneficial when the septic system is either undersized for today’s standards or the system is in a state of malfunction. There are a few other reasons such as smaller lot spaces to accommodate another drainfield area or adding additions or suites to a home.

Are you allowed to hook up a pool waste water discharge pipe into the city system?
You would have to call your local municipality on their guidelines for pool discharge as many jurisdictions have different regulations.

Based on BC connections it can range from $2500 - close to $10k with more complex connections where lift stations are involved

Question as Home owner can o do that ?
It can depend on your local by-laws, most often the City would require a plumber or contractor to perform the work, but if the homeowner is knowledgeable it is not outside the norm to allow a homeowner to conduct the work. At the end of the day you will either pass or fail the inspection and normally the inspector will allow corrections. I would certainly do a lot of research first before undertaking this type of work.
How did you find the city sewer?
The port is normally visible in many cases. In the cases we cannot locate the connection we search for municipal drawings which normally have measurements. We also use a utility locater to find the pipe or cover.

You usually can call your city utility Dept and ask them to locate your their sewer lateral.
What's the standard grade of the pipe from home to city sewer?
Either a SCH 40, CSA or an SDR rated pipe. All depends on the topography, depth and areas being driven on. We pretty much use an SDR 28-35 PVC
No inspection chamber?
There are multiple locations used as cleanout ports every 50ft starting from the house. Inspections happens at entry into city sewer main. Inspections here don't even require that much.
