- What is a septic system and how does a septic system work? Here in this video we briefly describe how an onsite sewage system works and various types of septic systems types.
Essentially we create a sewage disposal system in our own backyards. With city sewer, our sewage drains from our homes into underground infrastructure that leads to the city's wastewater treatment plant. This waste is then separated treated and released back into rivers, lakes and oceans for further dilution.
In our backyards, the soil provides the treatment of the home's wastewater. From the separation in the septic tank to dispersal in the drain field for further treatment of the effluent.

How long before the main septic tank fills up ?
It all depends on the size of your septic tank and how many occupants using the system. 2 people can fill up a 1000 g tank in about 2 weeks or less using toiletries, showers and laundry. Of course this depends on habits, the better the water conservation the more time it takes to fill the the tank. Typically a small family will fill a 1000 g tank in about 5 days.
