- Dr. Valethia Watkins of Howard University presented a talk on "Critical Issues in Black Women's Studies." This conversation is a part of a year-long series of virtual events marking the 50th anniversary of the Department of Black Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Man this needs to be spread far and wide. I will try my best but this was so amazing
50:16 I think Beyoncé was definitely trying to avoid looking like she was making a political statement. At that point in her career, her dad and team were still crafting and curating her image to make her a crossover pop star. Later, when "taking a stance" was more popular and expected, she figured out how to profit from that. It wasn't as risky at that point because she had already established herself as one of the biggest pop stars of our generation.
48:30 what she says about silencing is really provocative . I wonder how they will engage with this
51:15 that definition is live
53:30 imagine that !

I am in awe of Dr. Watkins and the brilliant way she challenges the "master narratives" about our history. She so succinctly, cogently, and relatably explains the ways we can break free from these imposed frameworks and think about our history in a way that centers the agency and systems of thought of our people. This orientation is so liberating. Thank you for this amazing presentation and thank you to the organizers for creating space for and sharing this conversation.
I came across her name in the "Africa World History Project"(1997) where she may seige to feminism in a manner Curry would ne in awe of.
Nice to hear her mention Clarke and Ani
