We as OSU fans drove up for the big game wearing Appalachian State shirts and even though we had tickets we bought before the start of the year were denied entry. We were told to take them off. We refused and a campus guard told us that those shirts were inciting a riot. The local police eventually got involved and had to tell them we could go in because we hadn't violated a dress policy. They were nasty and hateful but the police were as nice and polite as all get out. they diffused the situation and we had a great time.

@ Thomas Clark except it did happen. So get over yourself. We were heading to Royal Oak to see one of our favorite comedians and we wanted to catch a Ball game. I'm a HUGE Lions fan (it involves muscle cars, it's complicated), and hey a game is a game even if we get to root against a rival team.
And if you'll read my original post, It was one person who objected and the situation was diffused.
We weren't the only ones, it made the news for a week and the stadium crew caught a lot of shit for it!

This should be a thing people should do if they go to a game at Michigan. Regardless who Michigan is playing lol… just wear Appalachian State shirts just to see what reactions and how many people know what you’re referencing by wearing it there in 2022 haha. Would be golden content if you did it and wore a GoPro. Someone please do this!!

@12BJJohnson Too bad for Michigan, App State was the defending FCS National Champion and was in the middle of a three peat as champions going into this game and was actually good enough to hang and beat FBS teams, not like those FCS pushover teams that collect a check and lose 77-0. App State would've beaten a lot of FBS teams that year. Michigan was just the unlucky ones that had them on their schedule and thought it was going to be a walk in the park because they were facing a FCS opponent.

One reason I like watching the NCAA basketball tournament. You have only one chance to win and if the opposing team dictates to the higher-ranked team it is all over. I know it was only a matter of time before a 16 seed would beat a 1 seed. The talent pool in basketball is just too wide for all of the best players to go to the top schools. Besides, the smaller schools have veteran teams because they don't have one and done players like the big schools.

For me I think the NFL is better then college football because all teams are equally compensated and the teams are all competitive for the most part. In college football you pretty much always know who is going to win even in the bigger game. Sure there are underdog upsets a few times a year but when you're Alabama playing FAU how competitive are the games really? It's boring.
Now college basketball on the other hand is way more interesting then pro basketball, those kids are actually playing for something.

No.. not close.. App State has been in D1 football for a while now.. and while beating Tennessee would have been an upset, you could argue that Tennessee was overrated and App State probably sat around the 30-40 ranked mark (fpi)... when they played Michigan they were in 1-AA aka FCS.. which at the time, no FCS team had beaten a ranked FBS team.. let alone a Top 5 ranked team, until that day. App State was the only 1-AA/FCS team to ever be ranked in the FBS top 25 after beating Michigan. They would go on to win their 3rd consecutive 1-AA National Championship.

Being a ten year old Penn State fan in 2007, I followed the game online. The Penn state week 1 victory ended with over 6 minutes left in this game, and we refreshed the online play by play of this game once every minute until it was over.
Penn St fans like me were shocked and so happy to see App St pull this off at the time because Michigan had an 8 game win streak against Penn St going into week 1 of the 2007 season.

@@Stevonoles1 the original commenter was referring to the App State field goal that put them ahead 34-32. There were 30 seconds left when the ball was snapped for that field goal

Apply State was loaded with talent, used to winning championships, playing as a cohesive team and not intimidated by anybody. By the time Michigan realized that their opponent was taking the game seriously, it was too late.

The next season App State, still ranked #1 in the FCS, played defending champion LSU. LSU was up 31-0 at halftime and won 45-10, and App State would go on to only an 11-3 season where they lost in the FCS quarterfinals.

I don't know if this was the biggest upset. Appalachian State won the National Championship for their Division that year. They were not cupcakes. They had a very good team.

Not the biggest, but is was definitely big. A lot of people don't respect FCS football and look at it as little league when it's actually D1 with less money. But I agree with you because they were one of the elite FCS schools at that time and shouldn't have been taken lightly by anybody in any division.
