      I worked in tech retail for several years before having the first customer needing a mini SD card. She, of course, had no idea what she needed, so looking at the shot I said, well, it can't fit a regular SD card; the only other size is micro. That's how I learned there had once been a size in between.

      yeah I remember seeing those around '08-'09 when DS flash cards were really catching on. they were hard to come by back then, and always more expensive than 4GB SDHCs, but were desirable because of how those flash cards wouldn't support SDHC. they weren't worth the extra money.

    • @Browningate
      @Browningate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This was tricky because there were some mobile devices and card readers that didn't/don't support SDHC, so the 4GB non-SDHC SD cards were highly desirable in these cases.

  • @DaneeBound

    Fun fact: Ever wondered why the D in SD looks like a Disc?
    Well Toshiba originally designed that logo for a Optical Disc Format called "Super Density Disc" that was supposed to supersede the Compact Disc.
    Problem was, the licence-holders of the Compact Disc (Sony and Philips) were also working on a successor to the CD called Multimedia Compact Disc, which would have resulted in another format war between the SD-Disc (backed by Toshiba and seven other companies) and the MMCD (backed by Sony and Philips).
    The Computing Industry (led by IBM, Apple, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft) - not wanting to pick sides in the ensuing format war and end up on the wrong one - put pressure on these companies to come to an agreement on which format to use.
    Sony, Philips, Toshiba and the rest caved and came up with a compromise between the two formats they were developing separately.
    and that's how the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) was born.
    And since the SD-Disc was scrapped in favour of the DVD, Toshiba now had a useless logo just sitting around,
    but instead of being wasteful about it, they reused it for the Secure Digital format and the rest is history.

I occasionally thought it was like the trademarked but with copy right being the long version. Never bothered finding out the anything on it. I just new, unlike processors :( , bigger numbers were supposed to be better. So Just went for the biggest possible set of numbers in my price range and hoped it would work in the intended device.

  • @oskarstrom4034
    @oskarstrom4034 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    FYI the "number in the circle" (speed class) tells you the guaranteed minimum write speed, not maximum. Most faster cards are speed class 10, but can read / write much faster. Also, there were briefly 4 GB SD cards (as in not SDHC) before they switched to SDHC, though these are very rare.

    • @stephensnell5707
      @stephensnell5707 ปีที่แล้ว

      SDHC Cards even have 8GB capacities(my 7 year old Panasonic Video Camera has this size SD Card in it) and gives me up to 12 hours of recording time and it can take me up to a full 2 weeks or more to fill the entire 8GB especially if my Videos are only about 4 minuyes long but when I record multiple videos of 9 minutes or even 11 minutes duration th3 card fills up much quicker

    • @stephensnell5707

      I hated floppies. I did a win95 recovery and it required like 20 of those stupid tiny floppies. You could barely put 3 or 5 files or pictures on it and nothing else would fit. "Insert a other floppy to continue." Was not fun. I also hated hearing it make loud excessive noises. So thankful that era is over.

    I liked the video Linus, I don't like the new way ads are talked about. I understand if they pay for the time but it's like a full minute (or more) of it that I have to skip to get to the end of the video (Yes, I like watching videos entirely). I personally don't mind ads as I know they're a way of income, just hate it when they straight up cut what you're watching without a break (hello Twitch streams) or that take so long like these. I skip because I'm not buying, but if I were to buy anything and wanted to know more about the product, going to the page and getting information would be enough, so you could explain all that in 30 seconds or less (Specially in techquickie videos!). Just a suggestion :D
    TL;DR: I don't mind ads, they're just too long lately.

    Actually the basic SD can hold up to 4 GB. For some reason the 4 GB cards were very rare. Transcend had one: TS4GSDC. For practical purposes the 2 GB limit is the correct one.

    • @paradoxzee6834
      @paradoxzee6834 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okaro X Yes that is true the original SD cards used fat16 so the max should be 4gb.
      I think they change it to 2 for most SD cards because at the time some phones have problems opening files if you have a 4gb card inside, it would take longer than what it usually take

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tensile system is Not the issue. You can put any file system on the card. I tried FAT32 on my old Ixus 30 and it worked even though the camera formatted to FAT16. Of course different devices could work differently. Also the max for FAT16 is 2 GB if I recall correctly

Then they discontinued that memory stick length so if you had a digital camera you couldn't buy more cards because those cameras were no longer supported regardless that they were released 2 years ago....
      fuck you sony!!!! you fucking cut us all off when you had some really good cameras but fucked us over with the memory cards. they are finally coming back since the new alpha camera.... but that pissed me off so much. I was only able to take 4-5 images before the card filled up and when i started getting cards they disappeared and i was only able to buy the longer cards and the Pro's did not work... only the shot memory stick worked and they discontinued them AFTER 2 FUCKING YEARS

    I recently used an old Compact Flash, just to run it, prevent bit rot. And plugging it in felt so satisfying. I really like that format. Wish it was still popular in terms of support, and used in as a way of having like 20 times the capacity of an micro sd card. Or a raid 0 type card where you plug in multiple micro sd cards. I know that technology is there, CF is so unpopular that the ones I found I think were limited to 32GB.

    Products will list the highest card they can be fairly certain is compatible with their product. The 3DS product line advertises 32GB, I think. I am certain I have read it being tested with 128 and 256GB cards. If I have read of it working with 128GB cards multiple times.
    One of the biggest hurdles seems to be formatting the cards. The 3DS will only take a very specific format. I have never had issues with formatting to it using Windows. They don't recommend it. All the product sites that I have looked at recommend using a specific tool dedicated to formatting the card for best results.

    I don't consider the format war 'over'. CF and XQD are still useful if you need more speed.

  • @Timmyfox
    @Timmyfox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wouldn't say SD is the completely universal standard. Compact Flash is still around and is widely used in mainly high-end cameras as it's still the better choice as far as performance is concerned.
    There's also the newer XQD format which unfortunately, whilst being technically superior to both SD and CF, is struggling to be supported by anything aside from the last few models in Nikon's flagship series (D4, D5).
    Basically, yes SD is the de-facto standard for sure on the consumer market for almost any portable device but on the high-end and professional market, at least as far as photography is concerned, Compact Flash still has a pretty strong presence which I'm sure you're well aware of, Linus, considering you already made the video on CFast!

      CF-Cards are a huge pain in a layout. CF-Carde use a IDE / ISA like interface. SD-Cards in SPI-Mode use an easy Interface starting with 400kHz. Often found as USART Interface in most micro-controllers.
      CF(+)-Card's are much more versatile (PC Card ATA I/O Mode, PC Card ATA Memory Mode, True IDE Mode) but use an old IDE standard (in True IDE UDMA Mode 4).
      SD-Card's are for use with a modern USART communication and it's possible to put a SD-Card on a breadboard. With a CF-Card you'll start with 2 Layers and complex routing.
      CF-Card's going to lose against SD-Cards as they are getting faster with an easy and inexpensive serial interface.

    • @Timmyfox
      @Timmyfox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +losttownstreet That's not really what I'm saying. All I'm saying is that in high-end cameras from both Nikon and Canon, CF cards are used instead of SD for a variety of reasons. SD is improving significantly all the time but still has yet to catch up with CF in certain areas, performance for example.

    The only thing you really got wrong was the backwards compatibility part. It has nothing to do with the hardware in the card reader. It's all about driver support. I remember learning about this when my ancient Mp3 player wouldn't read SDXC cards until i flashed a third party firmware onto it.
    Another minor thing was about EXFAT. Any operating system (including older ones like Windows XP) can utilize it as long as they paid royalties to Microsoft. I believe this is the main reason why IOS devices still don't have SD card readers while Android ones do. Google paid the EXFAT royalties while Apple didn't.

    Would be interesting to hear your take on the ideal setup for someone who does 2D and 3D asset production, whom may have spent more money on their rig than they probably needed to, and is curious to see just how much buyer remorse they should feel about having bought a Titan X without really knowing for certain if the 12GB of VRAM would have that much more of an impact on Photoshop performance among other programs like Illustrator, ZBrush, 3DSMax and XNormal. And was largely thinking about all the sweet frames, anti-aliasing and post-filtering I'd get while gaming.

  • @SuperSmashDolls
    @SuperSmashDolls 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    SDHC and SDXC are almost the same spec and mostly interchangeable. The difference is the filesystem - XC calls for exFAT and only applies to 64GB+ cards, while HC calls for FAT32 and only applies to 2GB-32GB cards. While it is technically within spec for a device to be extremely picky with filesystems, I've never actually had to deal with a device that refused to accept a technically out-of-spec filesystem setup. In practice, "XC" support really means exFAT support; and non-XC devices (most notably, Nintendo 3DS handhelds) will accept a FAT32-formatted XC card just fine.
    Windows' own formatting utilities will no longer allow you to format large FAT32 partitions (large being >32GB) but this is less a technical limitation (FAT32 partitions can be up to 2TB) and moreso has to do with Microsoft wanting you to use exFAT instead (which they make patent license royalties from).

    Forgot about the whole MMC thingy...
    SD was a addon on MMC. MMC came quite a bit earlier and was initially a lot cheaper.
    There was one more thing. The MMC was a bit narrower than the SD. In a SD card they could back in the day fit one chip at both side of the breadbord inside the casing. IN MMC they could fit in just one. So basically geting twice the capacity.
    Really SD is a MMC that is thicker and have a smal 2 pin addon.
    There was also the SecureMMC that was basically a competitor to SD, but using software in steed of the two additional pins.
    The real anying part is when they start making the smaler chips MMC and mini-SD is very close in size, but not the exact same. Non of them become really that successful.
    Aditionally it was really the SDIO that was the music format with the secure part.. SD lack

    The big nag about the SD card standard is that the specification for readers is not forward compatible, I think it happens because the logic to decypher the nand resides in the reader instead of the card :( Something akind of the XD card specification which was only an encapsulated nand which was platform agnostic.
