Thanks for the video, added to my ever growing playlist of videos for WJ repairs. Just wanted to say, if you are in no rush to get bulbs, order them from rock auto, they cheapest is 34 cents a bulb, and for a price like that, I just bought a ton of them.
After two years of trying to diagnose a PO455 code (not the gas cap, trust me) I just want to say thank you sir because now I can finally remove that damn check engine light bulb and go on with my damn life.
Evidently, my stupid MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light), aka, CEL (Check Engine Light) bulb blew. I, too, have been struggling with a host of diagnostic trouble codes, espeically, P0455 & P0442. But somewhere along the way the MIL bulb blew out. In New Jersey you can NOT just yank this bulb and expect to pass inspection. I argued with those techs in our DMV but they won and I lost and still driving my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 months after failing inspection twice. Sucks for me.
I know this is quite a bit late and I do not know if you still own your jeep or still have the code, but my jeep just went to the shop for a diagnostic and they have said that it is my vapor canister that is what is causing the code to be on, if you still have jeep/code I would possibly look into this option.
Actually got my instrument cluster out over the weekend to put in the new bulbs. Turns out, it's not the PC74 bulbs but the L00PC121 bulbs for the illumination lights. They're even rarer than the PC74 bulbs. At least I'll now have 10 PC74 bulbs for when I need them, and I know I can easily change out the illumination bulbs when they come in. :-)
The bulbs for the indicators are PC74 and the actual illumination in the gauges are a 103 bulb but the plug in is the same and the only difference of the bulb is the size but an aftermarket led PC74 will work just fine for the illumination. A tip that I figured out 90% through the project is that to release the old bulb you have to squeeze it on the side with pliers to get it out
Super !!! Thank you. What about the lower part of the board, at the gear stick, is there also any video for replacen+ment bulbs of those ?? Thank you again :-)
@jerrym682 Yes, the PC74 bulb is the same for all of the dash panel lights. It's also the same type of light used behind the thermostat/AC controls on the center dash panel. I hope this helps!
The illumination behind my gauges went out andreplacing those lights didnt do anything, i believe it has something to do with the curcuit board, did you have any knowledge on this
What motor does your Jeep have? How you keep engine so clean? Why is there two filters. I seen it in the oil sensor video but comments were off so I’m hoping you will see this.
@sooperknob Coming a bit late to this post, but I'm having a problems with my dashboard, where the "night light" doesn't come on for the area between right side of the tachometer and the left side of the speedometer. Is what you show in this video the fix for that? I'd appreciate any feedback greatly. Thanks!
Hey there. What type of bulb is that pc74? Is it led or a color bulb? There are a bunch of different color and types on eBay for sale, I just want to put the OEM back in. Any insight would be helpful, thanks!
got a 2001 grand cherokee from ohio noticed check engine light not working took cluster out to replace bulb seat for bulb removed how do i find replacement to install bulb?
I no longer have my GC, but as I recall, all of the lights are the same. The amber color is not the bulb, it is only the color of the film used in the cluster to give the amber appearance. I'm pretty sure all bulbs are PC 74 type. Just make sure you install with correct polarity.
Got a couple lights out on my dash. How many lights are there in the cluster? I'm thinking of going ahead and replacing all of them while I've got it out.
I don't know if it's just me but I'm having a hard time getting the actual bulbs out from their sockets on both the cluster and the climate control unit on my 99 Laredo. Do you have any suggestions?
I am thinking of replacing my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee cluster panel because of the oil pressure gauge constantly going up, then down to 0 after few starts. The sending unit was replaced (bought it from dealer so it's not aftermarket). My only concern is if I buy a cluster from junkyard or aftermarket, will it have a different odometer when it comes up? I saw another post and was told the odometer is stored in the cluster...
can you help me find the bulbs for the single zone ac control in the 04 WJ 4.0L Grand Laredo? I am ready to swap my cluster lights using your video, but I need climate lights and automatic gear selector lights also, but no videos on that. thanks.
Which bulb would I need for the backlighting? I believe there are about 4 bulbs behind the cluster that do this. My 2 farthest sides of the cluster are out right now :(
Hey I have a problem with my cluster. The lights for the mph, gas etc don't work. I tried replacing the bulb...didn't work. I even bought a new cluster instrument....still nothing. I also checked the cluster fuse and it's fine...any thoughts?
It's not a bulb it's some sort of membrane. You either have to replace the entire center console or install custom LED strip lighting like I did for about $10
thanks i took it in and they replaced something the console but its still my same console i can tell by the marks that are on it as long as it works charged me 100 bucks.
If you have an Amazon Prime account, you can get a 10-pack for $16.99 and free shipping... www.amazon.com/Sylvania-PC74-10-Pack/dp/B00FJGQ64E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399568740&sr=8-1&keywords=pc74+bulb I found some locally at NAPA Auto Parts. You may want to call around at local auto parts shops (O'Reillys, AutoZone, etc.) to see if they have any in store. Just ask for PC74 bulbs!
I really enjoyed this video immensely. You included every detail to this job and didn't pull they old before-after edit trick on us. You actually unplugged those pesky harnesses and took the panel out live in front of us. But, SUPERKNOB, I'd have added whether it's okay to change the color scheme of your dashboard lights. I'm going with BLUE. That way, anyone familiar with Jeeps will know I altered this per personal customization. Also, to show tech boys in DMV I diligently replaced my old burned out MIL bulb. Also, exactly how many bulbs are there in our cluster panel? I just ordered a 10-pk. Something tells me there are maybe 13 - 15 bulbs in it though. Still will look a lot more interesting I feel.
Just going from memory, I think there are about 15 bulbs on the back of the cluster. These are the same bulbs used on the center console to back-light the thermostat controls (fan, heat, etc.). There are also about 5 or 6 on that panel as well. To do the instrument cluster and thermostat panel you'll probably need 20 bulbs or so.
How many bulbs would you say there are? I found that superbrightleds com has led bulbs made for this, but they're about $1.80/ea. My friend has one of these Jeeps and I find the original lamps in it too dull for me most of the time.
I *think* this is possible, but I'm not entirely sure. It's pretty easy to remove the center console and check. All you need to do is remove the screws at the bottom of the CD-tray (under the center elbow rest), and then the screws under the bottom tray below the radio/thermostat controls. The little tray just lifts out, revealing the screws. Once you get the screws out, the entire center piece can be removed. But remember, the teal is the color of the plastic - not the bulbs.
Did you completely re-seat the wiring harness at the back of the console (1:56)? Try disconnecting it and reconnecting it. Make sure it clicks into place. Let us know...
I can't remember, but it's easily 15-20 for the instrument cluster, and another 5 or more for HVAC. I'd say 30 should be a good amount with a few spares!
I REMOVED THE CLUSTER FOLLOWING YOUR INSTRUCTIONS IT WAS A SNAP I COULD NOT LOCATE HOLE WHERE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON RIGHT SIDE 1ST 2ND ETC START AT TOP
I don't know if I would even bother trying to fix an instrument cluster - just replace it entirely. You can get a used cluster for the 2004 Jeep WJs on eBay for about $50 shipped. Probably cheaper at a local junkyard. Follow the video up to 2:07, and then just drop in the replacement unit. :)
O rapaz me cobrou 2,000,00 !!! p/ o regulador de retrovisor elétrico do carona voltar a funcionar, é quase o meu salario do mes pensei ate em vender o carro .A nem...
This is how an instructional video should be done. Quick, no-frills, everything you need and nothing you don't. Thank you!
Amennn !!! ! !!! 🙂

@@brianbrewster6532 I went to the DMV in Rahway. They only checked emissions.
I know this is quite a bit late and I do not know if you still own your jeep or still have the code, but my jeep just went to the shop for a diagnostic and they have said that it is my vapor canister that is what is causing the code to be on, if you still have jeep/code I would possibly look into this option.

So I did mine and I can see all my guages now but the tac needles are very dim now. Are there lights for them too?? Did I miss something?
That's just too easy. Thank you for posting this!

You are the best. Is there a diagram somewhere as to which bulb is for what purpose?
Awesome video. Anyone know off hand how many bulbs there are?
What if you are not able to find a pc74 I want to replace mine with a red color
This is the good side of youtube.. Thank´s!

You are a good teacher, you explained it very well.
got a 2001 grand cherokee from ohio noticed check engine light not working took cluster out to replace bulb seat for bulb removed how do i find replacement to install bulb?

That bulb you use would it be the right one for a 97 jeep grand Cherokee burned out check engine light bulb

Can you make one on how to fix your speedometer
what about the light on the a/c and shift bezel can i change those and what size are they?

I WAS ONCE TOLD WHEN CHANGING BULB TO BE SURE TO USE THE CORRECT POLARITY HOW IS THIS DONE I GOT PC74 BULBS NEW PUT THEM IN CLOCKWISE BUT STILL NO GO
Hey I have a problem with my cluster. The lights for the mph, gas etc don't work. I tried replacing the bulb...didn't work. I even bought a new cluster instrument....still nothing. I also checked the cluster fuse and it's fine...any thoughts?
Sounds like you may have some faulty wiring... I'd suggest taking it to a shop. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Chrysa Calafut I know this was awhile ago but I'm having the same problem. Did you ever figure it out?
I’m experiencing the same issue
So helpfull!! Did the climate control lights and feared doing the dash because well its intimidating... Thanks, now its not a problem :)
how do i change the bulb in my gear shifter i have a 2000 jeep grandcherokee/wj and the gear shifer light has gone out.
It's not a bulb it's some sort of membrane. You either have to replace the entire center console or install custom LED strip lighting like I did for about $10

Good video, very helpful tutorial. I believe the pc74 are still maufactured Amazon has a large selection of brands for these
Wht if I want to put blue leds in?
have you ever had a problemwith your 4x4 not working ? if so what do you look for
Is there any dash light rheostat to control the intensity?
inboard of the headlight switch.
@sooperknob Does the just change the warning lights? or does this change the the speedometer and gas etc?
They are all the same! :)
Where do you recommend buying the bulb? I found one place but it will cost $10.00 for shipping for a $.78 bulb.

Thank you because I only ordered ten.
Now I can put that ABS light out. I am old school, drove 40 years without it and always hated it anyway. Thanks.

thank you so much, I'm doing this today and had absolutely no idea how. great job and thanks

I think there are somewhere between 15 and 20 lights total. Can't remember off the top of my head!
Ah PHUK! I just ordered a 10-pk through Amazon of the blue LEDs. Wish someone took the time to count all the bulbs these Jeep Cluster panels use.
well done. Very easy to follow. Thanks!!
As I recall the cluster is indeed tinted green, so changing the bulbs may not have the desired effect.
Thank you so much. I just purchased a 2004 and some light are out. ty again. :)
I finally got them out. It seems they were just stuck in there real good.
THANK YOU, I couldn't see from 0-60 @ night
Not sure what the problem is... they should just pop out with a little twist using a pair of pliers.
Excellent. Thank you
all right! Thanks for the info man!
Thank you I'm going to attempt this fix!!!
Yes, same kind of bulb!
Thank you !
damn check engin light is on. suposed to leave that one out. lol
Hahahahahajajajjahajahahahaha
Sorry, can't help you. But I would try checking the fusebox first.
Thanks
Thank you!!!

Man...!? you did not show the bulb neither the way it should be installed...!? You dive me nut...♡♡♡😣😥😞😕
My PC 74 bulbs came with the base attached. I didn't swap the bulbs out of the base ... just full replacement.
Keep instrument panel light bulbs
cool video i thought it was going to me much more involved...
Thanks! :)
Glad you got it working! Here's a good shot of how to remove the radio bezel... wjjeeps.com/radio_remove.jpg
it is a good video
