  • How good is the Aimpoint Micro S-1? Let's find out on a driven hunt, using shotguns on close-range deer and rifles on boar. Aimpoint takes Andy Crow and Roy Lupton into the woods of Sweden to find out. They have seen the factory, now they get to use the kit. Find out how they get on.

    Why shoot wild boar?
    Most of continental Europe has a wild boar problem. There are millions of animals causing possibly billions of euros of damage to farmland. Happily, there is a control system, based on sport hunting. In some countries, where sport hunters do not manage numbers effectively, they have to pay reparations to farmers.
    Wild boar are omnivorous and approximately 400 species of plants and animals have been reported to be part of their diet. Their habit of rooting through the floor of woodland and pasture leaves a clear indicator of their presence. They take both eggs and nestlings of ground-nesting birds. Damage to agriculture can also be extensive and concerns have been raised regarding collisions with traffic. Boar have no natural predators apart from small populations of wolves, meaning culls are necessary to control population growth.
    Wild boar are susceptible to the same diseases as domestic pigs and therefore have the potential to spread infectious disease such as swine fever, foot & mouth and Aujesky’s disease.

    In Switzerland we are hunting in fall roes also with the shotgun. We using no. 1 or 2 (4mm or 3.75mm pellets). That works perfect, if you shoot max. 30 meters. They get killed immediately.

    Coming from over here in the deep south U.S., we hunt deer driven by dogs and almost always use shotguns with buckshot. Doing this for roe makes perfect sense to me, loved the film!

      At the proper range a shotgun is amazingly effective. My dream is to join a European driven hunt one day. But, until that day, I will enjoy everything y'all post! I am preparing to leave on a week long waterfowl ( wildfowl to you guys across the pond I believe) hunt here in Arkansas USA. But I love everything you guys do at Fieldsports! Cheers to our British parents from over here.😊🇬🇧🇺🇸❤️

Me and my friends killed 5 deer for him last year and he was still a puppy, less than a year old. So if you want to come over here and hunt with me that can be arranged! But i want to "trade" with you and hunt with you in USA. Im dead serious!

  • @PaulBrown1963
    @PaulBrown1963 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not really sure what "death by sensory overload" even means. They are obviously dead, but could No.2 shot produce hydrostatic shock? I suspect that pellets striking the spine could do that.

    • @Benny---
      @Benny--- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Roe deer have a very sensitive central nervous system. Shooting them with large birdshot like US no 1-3 causes a complete overload of the nervous system which leads to instant unconsciousness and loss of cardiovascular function.
      The shot doesn't have to hit the spine. As long as the shot is placed in the torso and the shot pattern covers the widest possible area with as many individual pieces of shot as possible making contact the deer will drop dead mid-stride as if it had been hit by lightning, the deer don't even kick or thrash.
      The shot doesn't need to hit bone and the pellets rarely penetrate deeper than an inch under the skin under normal conditions.
      As far as I know the exact mechanics as to how and why it's so effective are poorly understood by science but the hunting method works remarkably well as long as you don't shoot the deer in the bottom.
      The same method should never be implemented against red deer and fallow deer, as it's almost completely ineffective and would therefore be highly unethical.

    • @PaulBrown1963
      @PaulBrown1963 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Benny--- Thanks. Yes, I agree and as I said, it obviously works but its "the exact mechanism" that eludes me 😁. There must be some sort of trauma to some part of the CNS either directly or indirectly. Otherwise its magic! And rational as rational people, we dont believe in that do we ? Very interesting all the same.

      Because you need enough pellets to have enough pattern to produce the shock. The old rules here were at least 100 pellets in the cartridge, usually 2.s.

    • @Benny---
      @Benny--- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Against roe in particular birdshot is actually more effective, and hunting roe with buckshot It's not legal in Sweden.
      Your options for roe deer are as follows:
      A shotgun (20bore or above) loaded with US no 1-3 birdshot, or
      A rifle class 2 or greater (.222Rem and above) loaded with expanding ammunition.
      So shotgun slugs and buckshots are prohibited for use against roe deer.
      In fact you're not allowed to hunt anything with buckshot, but buckshot ammunition is sold as it's fairly popular for tracking and putting down injured game (particularly boar) which from a legal perspective doesn't count as hunting and is governed by a different set of rules.

      Roe are quite small so the largest shotsize I have used are Dead coyote heavyshot in TT size. The killsone is about as big as an A4 paper and penetration does not requier much. Reach the spine or even just the ribbones close to it and you should be fine. Actually I find that they run further the fewer the shot that hits them. That despite larger woundchanel and passtrough from the larger shot
