I believe her sighs, breaths and cracks is part of her style they leave in. She does it live as well as you know. So to me it's just part of her and I love it. Gives her her uniqueness. I also read something Joe Hahn said that one of the reasons he liked her so much was her own way of screaming. It's not really like anyone else. Just her.

In contrast to "Given up" she has no time to breathe before the scream, she even sings "this is what you asked" before the "fooooooooor". They played the song at the end of their show in Hamburg with a slightly shorter scream. Impressive af.
The Hamburg show this song was 1h50m into the set. Like her vocals and endurance is CRAZY to even pull out 13 seconds (if you include the "this is what you asked" bit onto it)

Absolutely love the editing choice of leaving the breaths in. As you said, turns it into part of the performance - enhances the "desperate" feel.
This is not squeaky clean, processed vocals as instrument, this is raw anger externalized.
Her live of this song is absolutely nuts she kills it
There's real skill in knowing when imperfection serves art and the choice to leave in so much of the breath work in this song was genius to sell it's intensity

Emily is really making this her own and I'm loving it. On a side note, you were mentioning the breathing: you want to hear all of Muse's early albums. Matt Bellamy is the King of breathing in songs. Their lyrics are 50% breathing in.

My kids already love it. They're around 10 years old. I only became a metalhead when I was almost an adult and made it my task as a father that my kids got to get into the right kind of music. I love LP, they do too. Mission accomplished. (At least for now, hehe...)

I believe Mike said in several interviews with emptiness machine as an example, that they aren't editing or distorting emilys vocals in post at all, which is why the breaths are very audible,
I really dig how you can really hear her breath here.. For me it just makes the song feel more "natural" if thats the right word for it, the feeling of desperation just feels a whole lot more authentic.

I was at the concert in Hamburg where they played that song first time live, and I can tell, that they also nailed that song in the live environment, Emily even did the long scream at same length without issues. The entire concert was really awesome, I‘ve never encountered such connection and spirit between band and audience before. Of course, rest in peace Chester, the band is doing a great job in not trying to replace him. During the entire concert you felt that he has still his place on stage, which gets filled with the spirit from the audience, while Emily co-exists and simply takes in a new role. Really looking forward into the bright future of Linkin Park. 10/10

man you are my favorite vocal analyst ever since I found you through my ado obsession and now it happened that you reacted to something related to league of legends my other obesession lol. I know you were focused on linking part and not the video necessarily but out of curiosity: how did you like the video?
riot games or specifically league of legends is famous for their music videos for world championships and season opening cinematic trailers. If you are interested I have some songs from them that might interest you. I am sure you know imagine dragons warriors (2014 worlds song) and imagine dragon enemy (from the arcane series) already. Here is a list with league songs that I think could be interesting for you. Top is the one I think would be the most interesting to bottom more generic pop songs (still good performances) that might interest you. Also all have banger hype videos haha. So ye if interested I hope you enjoy them.

for all worlds songs there is also a live performance from the finals of the world championship if you want to watch that over the studio versions or both versions. Though the rise one has been performed twice. I don't remember when excactly they did the 2nd time but I remember the 2nd time was better than the first one.
The worlds songs are usually there to capture the spirit of the grind and fight the pro players put up through the year and often feature the stories of their journey to win the world championship in the previous year or a hype video for the upcoming world championship. 2018 for example features the journey of pro player "Ambition" of the samsung galaxy roster from 2017 and his rise to victory against the goat of League of Legends "Faker" (you know faker already from the linkin park video (he was the guy they brought the crown with his current teammates)). The cinematic season openers are more epic trying to capture the breathtaking world of league of legends lore and have a bit more instrumental focus but the vocals are also good.

You can use the entire music without any strike. Riot never claim music. And its Worlds music, they will not strike. And for sure there is a deal with Linkin park to not strike.
