I don't think people understand how much Mike influenced Chester's vocal style. I think everyone is going to be surprised at how Emily's voice evolves after working with Mike more.
There are good BTS vids of Mike and Chester going back and forth on vocal takes and different vocal approaches. Mike's a decent singer but he's one heck of a producer.
@@fallinginthed33p exactly. Mike would really guide him on placements and where to push and pull back on the harsh vocals. You can hear how much more dynamic Chester is from Grey Daze to the Hybrid Theory album. He was definitely talented l, but Mike was really able to help him tighten up everything and become the force he was.
maybe i am wrong but it seems that female vocalists often push less and choose the "safest" approach and therefore are less prone to losing their voice. emily sounds like shes holding back and i think it is a good thing. she is 38 years old and now has to perform all this hard songs for two hours which was very hard for chester himself. it is funny to me when i see some comments about her not hitting 100% of the notes. That setlist is nearly impossible to perform perfect. nice video btw!
I have to say, as a female screamer I feel like it's the opposite. I feel like we have to push more because we sound thinner naturally and we usually try to compensate. That and the fact that we have less lung capacity makes it necessary to do so. I think it sounds more relaxed just cause there's less low overtones to it generally, but Emily clearly makes a lot of effort.
I wouldn't say holding back. I would say she found what was comfortable for her and what works for her voice. Then again, the music was not written for her, so she might not feel as passionate about it as Chester was, because he felt it. She's doing the best she can with it, but not trying to be Chester. She may take a different approach when it comes to her own music and that will be found out when the album comes.

You should really watch her Kia Forum performance. She doesn't have any of the problems of the livestream. She annihilates every song, especially Keys to the Kingdom toward the end. At the recent NYC show she also did a crazy improvised 8 second scream during the outro of Faint that sounded so effortless and gnarly. She definitely had nerves during the livestream, but those are all gone. Frankly, even Mike sounded worse during the livestream compared to how well he killed it at the last two shows.
Chester had a talented way of screaming and singing combined. It was controlled. He would often scream the lyrics while singing a broad range while being completely in tune. Very talented singer.
When you were going over that one section, the one with "break" being lower, and talking about it being more of a "gagging" typr sensation and coming from up there, that helped me actually hit the lower and more gutteral sounding scream I've been trying to hit for YEARS now 😀. I've never heard it described that way before (if you did in previous videos, then i guess it just didn't stick then lol 😅) and it CLICKED!! Thanks Chris 😁🤘
Her distortion definitely is a lot looser sounding and has a lot more note to it. She's been leaning on it more for the older songs for the concerts than she did at the livestream. It has a pretty dynamic onset and exit, so it gives the harsh vocals a lot more of an unhinged, chaotic feeling.
she's using her true vocal chords instead of falsechords, it's damaging her voice throughout the set and this type of scream is more air consuming that's why she can't hold the Given Up scream for long, hope she will learn a different technique
@metalmax2852 No, she isn't. She didn't just start singing and screaming two weeks ago. She's been doing it for twenty years and has never hurt her voice. She knows technique
You do one of the best breakdowns I’ve seen and I’ve seen a ton of vocal coaches. Many just constantly use their 10 dollar words to describe a sound but does that really teach you how to do it? Like it involves increasing frenal space, retracting, the false vocal folds, and optimizing the position and articulators, like the soft palette, lyrics, jaw, and tongue. ….wut? Compared to your description what your body needs to do to make it sound correct. Simply explaining how it’s like vomiting instantly made me understand and instantly made me be able to do it correctly. Vs just mimicking the “sound” but not accurately. So props mate. Rip Chester. He was so good. I just wish he would have recorded a verse. “SHUT YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOUR TALKING TO ME. SHUT UPPPP.” Your friend was just okay singer but he would be amazing at voice acting
Enjoyed the analysis but not sure I agree with some of your comments. She doesn't need to do the same techniques Chester did, she's not a replacement, she is her own thing and I think her voice is perfect as it is and this she represents the new era for the band. Maybe her voice will evolve in different ways singing with the band but she doesn't have to be a copy to sound great. Linkin Park with Chester will always stay in our hearts, there's enough space for both of them.
Not a vocal expert, but I think Emotion adds spice to the screams, look at how Chester's emotion when singing the songs and how he sweats heavily on stage when he's all out, and switching from calm to scream is so smooth while doing 8+ songs live is fucking amazing. damn
I'm just now seeing this video now on Christmas 2024, but I can say after listening to the Linkin Park's Concerts from Brazil and I think Germany? from November, she is already very different sounding and more comfortable and melding in with the band very well. I was very surprised how much improvement and comfortability for lack of a better term, she has had in such a short time! Very much looking forward to see how She/Linkin Park evolve in time!
Range + scream = Mind Blown Chester did a lot of that effortlessly. And he switched between singing and screaming so efficiently we wouldn't even notice.
I love the detailed breakdown and comparison between their screams. I’ve always had a “good ear” and have noticed so many ways Chester used his voice in his songs. I’m no musician, but I appreciate all kinds of music. It’s fascinating! Thank you! 🙏🏼
Chester had such a precisce control over the amount of grit and distortion he could jump in and out of with his voice it at different hues and colors, completley confusing adept listners as to where his transitions lied, And the distortion itself was always clean and harmonically produced many pleasing edgy overtones. and often times sounded like a self-harmonizing vocal effect. The height of Chesters vocal prowess lied between 2004-2008. Between those years, especially 2007 he was an absolute war machine, afterwards Chester lost the very middleground of an aggressive clean classic rock sound. It is pretty obvious in more middle ground sections where he would masterfully execute this like faint or bleed it out, he no longer had the ability to blend those sounds as well and opted to either not distort, or go at a full distortion that sounded a lot throatier and sizzly. I honestly believe that after The Hunting Party Chester intutivley knew this and helped push for the more clean sounds of One More Light. I feel like this is where Emily is at. She has an incredible voice, but she either goes at an overly distorted mode or a sound that is pure and clean with little hues in between and without much of the carefully laced dynamics and nuance Chester at his prime sang with. And sadly the distortion itself is plagued with constriction and very dirty overtones that sound clenched instead of freed. Its honestly impressive she can do that as much as she has, but its obvious by the amount of shakiness and cracks through some songs that a fully scheduled tour would annihlate her. I still like her, and even though some LP songs could use some work, Emptiness Machine sounds amazing with Emily clearly being who she is vocally without any pressure
I agree with almost everything you said. Ultimately I think trying to imitate Chester would be a mistake. He was an absolute monster with that voice. If she tries to duplicate him I think she would end up destroying her chords. I assume they will start writing more for her voice. Then fans can decide if they are into it or not. Chester had that 1 in a billion voice. Casually screaming with so much nuance. The guy was magic.
During heavy choruses (like Meteora songs) Chester not just flat-out screamed but used a very colorful blend of singing and screaming, being in control of it all the time. Emily's screams seem more like a Kurt Cobain-esque desperate flat out throat ripping, which sadly doesn't sound healthy to me at all. I like that she's passionate about it though!!
Awesome video Chris, you're getting so damn good at hearing these differences in sound and biological processes that make them happen. A real joy to listen!
”This is her approach to screaming”. Yes, sometimes when it might sound like her voice ‘cracks’ live, that’s basically what she does on the studio albums as well. (Probably some nerves at the first show though) I still think it sounds great, and it makes her voice feel more ‘real’ and human. To me, it’s part of her unique style. I love the last 2 minutes of this song for example even if I wouldnt call the screaming ”perfect”: th-cam.com/video/BHQ9mGC3rc0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RATjenMxkAVHZdma
@chrisliepe you should do another analysis down the road, this one is based on her debut show and compared to a many shows of Chester. She already improved a lot. Not to mention how ballsy she is to take over the band! 🎉
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Appreciate you listening to Weatherman! I loved this way too much! All the knowledge I've gained from watching your videos! Now I understand and can recognize those things live now! It was amazing seeing her live, and being able to pinpoint the techniques! I'll never appreciate your explanations enough! You're an amazing person and I'm always looking forward to your breakdowns! Thank you again! Gotta love em' all!
0:20 you needed to say this, and without this warning, and by just looking at the title, i was about to say your missing the most important fact about the professional replacement of Chester....(note that i said professional replacement, and not emotional, or expressive replacement of Chester.)
I came here from looking up this new LP singer she sounds great tbh, nothing wrong with changing it up. Love the vibes here. Good commentary and knowledge of technicality, love how you can take apart the voices and demonstrate using your own voice which sounds great as well! Not sure if it will ever happen considering I couldn’t find game OST reactions here but I’d love to see a reaction to Cosmograph’s Burn it All, Red Ash, or Daybreak tracks. Nikke has some really good vocals in some of their songs. Some of the best music I’ve heard in a game.
Splendid analysis again, Chris! Learning a lot once more! I always felt like Kurt's voice lets out more air when he screams or sings raspy. It sounds not just looser but also more breathy to me, which gives it this broken up sound. Emily's technique seems quite similiar!
Fantastic video 🤩 Supper helpful hearing a comparison of the different techniques to produce different sounds and having you break them down and recreate them. I greatly respect that you bring your teaching philosophy of try everything judge nothing into this comparison. There is no judgment just careful observation and helpful instruction. 🙌🌟🙏
I used to be a Marine Corps drill instructor and so wish I could have learned some of these lessons back then. A lot of folks could have saved their voice by practicing some of these methods. Had to learn on the fly and by then most people vocal chords are trashed.
Chris please check on their new single Heavy is the crown you can analyze Emily scream. You did great job figuring the differences. Thank you for the vocal range explaination. I feel like I want to learn how to scream now 😂
Now that you have done a screaming analysis, would be interesting if you review Keys to the Kingdom. Both Emily live and Chester on the album since they never did it live.
Hey chris, i remembered this video of your reaction to one step closer screams, listening to LPs Live In Riyadh at the 2024 Soundstorm festival 3 days ago, consider reacting when you will have LP reaction video in your schedule, if we get good footage from that show (there is OKish footage of almost full show, and on faint emily went INSANE, cosidering she had flu)
If the controversy blows over which I think it will with time then it’s a good move for future LP fans and all. There will always be room in the past for what they have done and I think the only issue is her background and not her talent or technique for taking over Chester’s place.
Interesting find there at the end, that as you said: 'we know the technique is there we just havent heard it as much from Emily yet'. Its crazy to me how skilled she is and I love the sound of her voice too, who knows if she wont lean more into that on the album or on live shows in maybe a year or so, but I think shes only gonna get better from here on. Also her live performance from the Kia forum is sound wise crazy close to perfection I enjoy it a lot, sounds way better than the very first performance. would love if you would find something interesting in there to make another interesting video about lol
I think a good vocalist you’d like to listen to is Luke Bentham of The Dirty Nil. He’s got a great sense of vocal melody and a good vocal breakup. He’s got almost an oldies sense of vocal melody and mixes that with a punk rock edge. Master Volume is my favorite album of theirs and showcases his vocal breakup a lot more
What do you think about Emily's screams from a health perspective? In her previous band, even though she also screamed, it was with less intensity. I'm wondering if Chester's songs and the greater intensity of screaming are having any impact on her voice. (Chester, towards the end, screamed very little, and you could see a huge difference in his vocals)
If you compare the studio screaming from One Step Closer to Emily's scream, it's a bit closer, but his *live* screams and studio meteora+ seem to be a lot more fleshed out. It seems like Chesters screaming maybe wasn't as developed when he recorded Hybrid Theory. It would be cool if Emily can flesh out her scream similarly over time.
Chesters 17s scream was out this world he litterally emptied his lungs took a deep breath and continued singing normally...... HOW it just seemed to go against science lol
I´m sorry for my brutal honesty but IT MAKES ME ANGRY that people think the voice cracks are "bad, not on purpose, signs of bad singer" GO LISTEN TO KURT COBAIN´s MTV UNPLUGGED! Dude was cracking on every song. About a Girl (Easy Frienddddd), Come as You are (as An oooold), Where did you sleep last night (I would shiveeeeeeuuoooouooooo), Lake of Fire (Julyyyyyyyy), etc etc etc. I always found that BEAUTIFUL and you know what? It also means Kurt used a PROPER fry singing technique! Means the singer is singing CLEAN NOTES underneath all these filters/layers. A bad technique singer will just pull the notes from chest like Dave Grohl does ("I´ve got another confession to maaake") and that´s NOT HEALTHY, doesn´t have vibrato or dynamics, it doesn´t sound as good live too. So please stop judging Emily cracks, they are intentional and they are beautiful!
I saw someone comment on a video that Chester sang with pain, Emily with rage and I think that’s a decent way to quickly differentiate their styles. Not to say Chester never sang with rage or vice versa but I think it’s a nice, simple way to describe their styles
God Chester was good. I can't imagine even trying to fill his shoes. Kudos to Emily. That pressure is insane. She's handled it all well on top of the controversy. It's different, but it fits.
In the concert after the livestream, she actually sounded a good bit better and that concert was twice as long. Listen to more recent Dead Sara stuff. She has more control of her screaming/ scream singing there but I agree with you. She has a much looser and "wilder" approach than Chester said. I think she's an incredible singer but I also think she'll learn more control and diverse textures with her screams/scream singing. Chester had amazing technique and I'm confident that Emily will learn healthier technique the more she works with Mike and the band. From a purely technical standpoint, I think Chester had better technique than Emily does with the scream singing for sure. Emily's voice is amazing and she'll only get better from here on out so I'm looking forward to hearing her voice as she gets multiple Linkin Park albums under her belt. I'm here for Emily's evolution :) Chris, I f*cking LOVE your vocal breakdowns and your whole vibe, man. Been following you for a while now. Oh, and you have a ridiculously amazing voice!
I think she could not scream as it needed. She’s screaming on vocal cords , instead of false cords . And as she sounds hurting cuz she’s damaging her voice as fuck.
I didn't think I needed this because I honestly don't care about the news since I only listen to Linkin Park's old/early albums anyway. But it's nice to learn about this.
It doesn't seem like she is using a proper fry scream, which is what you show and what Cheater does. Her "scream" seems unsafe for me, it sounds like she is just pushing more air into her regular gritty singing so it sounds more like a scream, it doesn't sound that she is getting it from a relaxed head voice. That's a lot more air pushed than what fry scream requires. She will won't be able to hold anywhere close on let's say given up and she will sound thin, cause more air = squeal and not fat scream.
we have to remember that these are two different singers with different styles of singing, just like we have different F1 drivers playing the same game but with different tactics of winning the race. So when it comes to Emily and Chester, they each have their different ways of dong their singing. Let's not also forget that a woman's vocals is not the same as a man's. so hearing Emily do the scream the way she's doing it, we all need to give her credit for doing what many cannot do. And she's not here to be Chester, she's here to be Emily.
Great break down I think Emily's vocals will evolve with the band she definitely needs the right vocal coach if she doesn't have one to make sure she's protecting her voice using the proper techniques. If you listen to LP from the beginning Chester vocals was clean and not very thick but over time he grew so much worked his tail off to develop something very special and unique. Emily is at a solid starting point she sounds great now she's definitely got the goods things are only going to get better with hard work. Maybe you might want to reach out to them about being a personal vocal coach 👀👌 💯
Hey Chris! I love your work so much! I found your channel as a Ren fan! Please please please do a review of LP - Lost on You (live) That song has over a BILLION and a half views. It's a seriously life changing song! They (LP laura pergolizzi, they/them) have written songs for Rhianna, Christina Aguilera, Céline and more. Also, LP does a live version of their song "One That You Love" (live on a rooftop in france i believe) which contains one single 15 second note that I would seriously pack up and dedicate my life to if I could!! Lol LP is another rabbit hole of awesomeness that I would say is similar to when I heard Ren for the first time. You won't be disappointed I promise!!!
I still missing the dimensional Element in Emilys screams and the emotions. Her screams are kinda oldschool Hardcore very straight way. Chester was able to bring in way more depth into it.
Hey! Not sure where to post this, but I would like to request a Silent Theory vocal analysis if you have time! "The Cracks", "For What It's Worth", "Made Me This Way", "Sticks and Stones", "The Price". Take your pick :)
Chester's screaming is based around his neck muscles and upper diaphragm. Emily's screaming is based around her core and lower diaphragm because she has a lower range.

This voice breakdown is ridiculously amazing plus doing sample!?🐐
Fascinating, never knew there was so much into it like that 🤯
During heavy choruses (like Meteora songs) Chester not just flat-out screamed but used a very colorful blend of singing and screaming, being in control of it all the time. Emily's screams seem more like a Kurt Cobain-esque desperate flat out throat ripping, which sadly doesn't sound healthy to me at all. I like that she's passionate about it though!!
idk, she looks so chill while doing them. Looks and sounds almost effortless
Apples and oranges. Emily is here to keep Chester’s memory alive and move the band forward. She has never claimed to be Chester’s
Great comment, I like the analysis but he kept going back to so-called missing things from Emily. She is different and also awesome. 😎
Great break down of the voices. But always Chester #1 for me. Definitely can't be replaced. Just my opinion ✌️
Awesome video Chris, you're getting so damn good at hearing these differences in sound and biological processes that make them happen. A real joy to listen!
This was fascinating, love how you delved into this at a level that makes educated, data driven sense vs emotional comparison.
”This is her approach to screaming”. Yes, sometimes when it might sound like her voice ‘cracks’ live, that’s basically what she does on the studio albums as well. (Probably some nerves at the first show though)
I still think it sounds great, and it makes her voice feel more ‘real’ and human. To me, it’s part of her unique style.
I love the last 2 minutes of this song for example even if I wouldnt call the screaming ”perfect”: th-cam.com/video/BHQ9mGC3rc0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RATjenMxkAVHZdma
This was fun to watch, Thank you.
I kinda like your own personal scream the most out of either of theres. Ive heard it a few times in videos and i dig it.
0:20 you needed to say this, and without this warning, and by just looking at the title, i was about to say your missing the most important fact about the professional replacement of Chester....(note that i said professional replacement, and not emotional, or expressive replacement of Chester.)
another banger. ima have to study this one again while i practice. thanks chris
Great idea for a video. I hope this gets a billion views!
That first low roam from Chester. God, I’ve listened to this song so many times, today is the first time I actually consciously registering it.
Splendid analysis again, Chris! Learning a lot once more! I always felt like Kurt's voice lets out more air when he screams or sings raspy. It sounds not just looser but also more breathy to me, which gives it this broken up sound. Emily's technique seems quite similiar!
Chesters scream is the best
Great breakdown of the difference and Andy is awesome… just how relax he look doing it
Fantastic video 🤩 Supper helpful hearing a comparison of the different techniques to produce different sounds and having you break them down and recreate them. I greatly respect that you bring your teaching philosophy of try everything judge nothing into this comparison. There is no judgment just careful observation and helpful instruction. 🙌🌟🙏
When Chester screaming he's like fighting to the one inside his head
I used to be a Marine Corps drill instructor and so wish I could have learned some of these lessons back then. A lot of folks could have saved their voice by practicing some of these methods. Had to learn on the fly and by then most people vocal chords are trashed.
Everytime I hear Emily, I become a bigger fan of her. I might just start listening to some of her old music. Thanks Chris.
7:29 "This is also Chesty"😂
Start with her Drum DIves. :D (Nothing to hear there tho :D )
@@zdenekdolezal9646 Ah that's why Rob left
Thank you for this video.
I recommend you check out the Faint's performance at the concert in Brooklyn.
Part Two? Now that Emily has covered more of the songs with many live versions for side-by-side comparisons :)
There is no controversy, just lazy internet detectives.
11:31 HOLY SHIT, this was amazing
Very helpful, I always find it's hard to be so powerful like Chester was, maybe this is the point I didn't realize.
Really insightful! Thank you Chris ^-^
Fascinating 100%
They sound healthy, sustainable and fine to me :)
Great video!!!!!
I would love to see your vocal analysis for Spiritbox's new song, Soft Spine
Chesters 17s scream was out this world he litterally emptied his lungs took a deep breath and continued singing normally...... HOW it just seemed to go against science lol
I saw her on the last live with Linking Park in Seoul and she already improved a lot, she killed all the screaams
I see Chris upload video, I click like button
I´m sorry for my brutal honesty but IT MAKES ME ANGRY that people think the voice cracks are "bad, not on purpose, signs of bad singer"
GO LISTEN TO KURT COBAIN´s MTV UNPLUGGED!
100% YESS!!!
@@chrisliepe omg the best vocal teacher in the world agrees with me, that made my day
couldn't agree more!
Emily has what it takes to get her voice on par with the right coach she'll get it!
This song the weatherman sounds like similar to warrior soul if you remember that band
I saw someone comment on a video that Chester sang with pain, Emily with rage and I think that’s a decent way to quickly differentiate their styles. Not to say Chester never sang with rage or vice versa but I think it’s a nice, simple way to describe their styles
I can’t but help that I hear Morty in your voice as you describe how her style approach is
God Chester was good.
Such an excellent analysis!
Thank you for all the work and keep going please
I felt everything you said
Emily = screaming
Chester= pain
but idk why she reminds me a lot of Chester's energy .I am very satisfied and given her age she has so mush to learn and improve
Yes, Chestier Bennington!
I believe Emily is neither superior nor inferior to Chester; each possesses their own unique greatness.
I think she could not scream as it needed. She’s screaming on vocal cords , instead of false cords . And as she sounds hurting cuz she’s damaging her voice as fuck.
Always Chester Bennington best then emily
Stop comparing, she's not a substitute for him, she's a new voice for the band.
@@epicwalky3273 talentless
Fans are pissed Emily joined LP but imagine how upset they'd be if Jared Leto got the gig? 🤣
Her voice is so raw, Mike Shinoda must have been steering Chester into the sound that LP should have.
I am so vibing with Emily... I LOVE this is not a "replacement", but a new sound and keeping their history while making new moves. I LOVE THIS.
Interesting breakdown.
we have to remember that these are two different singers with different styles of singing, just like we have different F1 drivers playing the same game but with different tactics of winning the race.
Beautiful my friend!
Please please please do a review of LP - Lost on You (live)
That song has over a BILLION and a half views.
Lol
LP is another rabbit hole of awesomeness that I would say is similar to when I heard Ren for the first time. You won't be disappointed I promise!!!
I still missing the dimensional Element in Emilys screams and the emotions. Her screams are kinda oldschool Hardcore very straight way. Chester was able to bring in way more depth into it.
Now show me your war face. AAAAHHHHHH, that's a war face.
This was funny, thank you for the analysis, enjoyed this one :)
8:15 OMG 😂
Thanks, I knew something felt inconsistent about Emily's screams, but I couldn't understand what she was doing to cause it.
