Lathan Johnson you should have debriefed me before you recorded this video.
I was the packer on this fire.
I was at the trailhead on time.
I didn’t not need “help packing”
the line crew wanted to “help”
and l was waiting on grocery panniers that the Forest Service were to pack the night before and have at the trailhead.
The line crew left ahead of me.
We did have fire shelters in our saddle bags. (Travis Braighten trued to get me to deploy it with them, l chose to save my horse and mules and make sure my assistant was safe!)
I dropped fire wrap at War house crick, caught up to and passed the line crew.
I ran into the fire, turned around, back down trail to inform the line crew to find a safe zone to deploy shelters.
When running my packstring down the trail I caught up with the gal that was killed in a helicopter wreck later that summer, she was running down the trail in a panic, told her to cross the river and deploy her shelter on a rock slide.
When l reached he trailhead the local press was there, wanting to know what went wrong, who was at fault?
My statement to the press is all the right people were in the wrong place, no ones fault, the people are properly trained and because of their training they have a very good chance of survival.
Hope it made you feel better to blame someone else.

    what is a detailer?

      Hey Jeff!
      Great question!
A "detailer" is a "fill-in" or someone who is on a temporary assignment or detail with a crew. Some details can be short (14 days) and some can be 120 days or longer.
      Thanks for the question!

Shows how despite technology communication is still primitive!

The gentleman packing out with mules seemed to have become the biggest snafu in this entire incident. Multiple resources and precious minutes were wasted on his account. Maybe someone knows the story behind his operation. Seems to me that what he was doing was completely unnecessary.

The gentleman in question actually left a comment on the second part of this video, as did I, and he feels quite irritated that they would blame him, I'd recommend reading his side of the story before coming to a conclusion.
Also I think its important to remember people panic when their lives are on the line, I think this is an already established fact. I don't think its right to "blame" anyone who was acting out of fear. That doesn't mean people don't do stupid things, just that under the circumstances that's kinda to be expected
