    A Mitered Dovetail Corner is this week’s Woodworking Joint of the Week. It is made from lacewood and quilted maple. The two side are dovetailed using to sets of tails and then cut at a 45 degree bevel. I had so much fun making this and really like the way it looks. I first saw this at the William Ng School of Woodworking in Anaheim and fell in love. I wanted to reproduce it and it came out great. It isn’t as strong as most dovetailed joinery but it is strong enough for a jewelry box for sure. If I had to do it again I would probably add some inlay and make the tails a little shorter. I did smash my finger with my mallet and then hurry the joining of the joinery hahaha, which let to a little crack. Next time I will take a little more time and make sure the tails fit together. Let me know in the comments what joint you’d like to see next week. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

    i gotta say, seeing that ever so slight gap when you fit them together makes me feel a whole lot better about the joints ive been making. ive only made like a dozen or so, but i still have issues with gap fit here and there. to see someone with your expertise have that small gap gives me confidence that its not just something im doing, but something that can happen to any of us. even though the joint doesnt have the same strength as a normal dovetail joint, it looks amazing!

    I had to stop the video when Shaun replied because I was laughing so hard! Even though I tried to laugh as quietly as I could, I still laughed loud enough that one of my dogs barked and woke up my wife because I heard her telling him to shut up. Oops!
    I didn't know that a Saw Stop tablesaw came with a micro adjust miter feature. That's good to know.
    Seriously though; I've only made one project so far with dovetails, so I'm not that great at it yet, but I would like to make a jewelry box with this joint someday.

How much harder would it be to make that pin piece as one solid piece vs the long board, cut down to a miter? Also, ditto some of the other questions, what kind of wood was that dark piece, it looks amazing.

    Everyone has already pointed out this is a weak joint, but what if instead of doing it like this you dovetailed a post (L shape looking from top down) on the ends of the legs of the L which you put into the maple. That way you'd get this beautiful join and have the strength of the dovetails?

    • @chippysteve4524
      @chippysteve4524 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You couldn't form the tails/pins into a post (vertical grain orientation) as the 'pins' formed in the post would be all short grain and almost as weak as the one in the video.
      In cabinetmaking/cabinetry it is generally considered vulgar to have endgrain (dovetails in this case) seen on the outside of a piece of furniture i.e. acceptable for drawers as only seen when the drawers are open.

    I would rather do the center pins-piece from a single, thicker piece that you orient at 45-degrees. It's a little bit extra work, but it won't lose the strength of the dovetail that way. Unless you absolutely want only sidegrain on your corner of course. Then the only way to strengthen it is a hidden spline. Or you could miter the solid pins-piece at 45-degrees as well so it'll be just sidegrain. It would still be stronger that the hidden spline technique.

    Looks great, but kinda misses the point of the dovetail joint, which is strength.

    Where do you get the wood from?

  • @muon23
    @muon23 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be pretty with strength, you can use a thicker piece as the corner and do one of those "impossible dove tail" thing. You carve dove tails in 45 degrees and slide the corner piece in 45 degrees, then cut out the excess.

    There is no integrity to the joint. It is basically an end-grain to end-grain glue, which is very weak. I would call it "the Pretty Liars joint".

    Hullo young man. Really good to see you in your new shop, looking forward to having a look around. First of all , I would have paid good money to see that skelp right on the finger. Good job for dud batteries, (suspicious). Did that melody go something like, what the f*ck you stupid f*kcing ar*se hole. Could someone pick up my mallet from across the other end of the workshop please. That is one beautiful joint Mr Moses. This one I will I will have to try. This comment to continue.

      Hullo young man. This will be the second part of my comment. What a stunning joint and the choice of timber just made it shine. What I notice is the concentration you show when you are working on a project, very inspiring. You have been doing to much manual work as your finger nails are a mess. treat yourself to a wee manicure.

    I'm certainly not attacking your woodworking skills, but that has to be one of the most worthless joints I've seen. Why would you take one of the strongest joints, and turn it into one of the weakest ? I would think there has to be a better way.
