    I stubbled across your video when searching for things to do in Chiang Mai/Pai. Your video was so help and enjoyable to watch! Next month I'm heading up to Chiang Mai for a week or so, and I wanted to try and go to Pai as well. Watching this video has convinced me that I need to Pai! The nature looks breath taking and I want to experience that in person! Thank you!

    13 years visiting Pai (my wife is a teacher there), and I've seen major changes from the sleepy backwater it used to be.
    The "Pai In Love" film brought hordes of visitors from Bangkok, and then the investors moved in with the resorts that are filling the surrounding valley.
    Time for us to sell up and move somewhere quieter.

    don't ever leave your passport with anyone. just make a copy of it, if they won't rent to you, go somewhere else. that's just terrible advise

    • @sameebah
      @sameebah 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Not only is this good advice, but legally when visiting Thailand you should have your passport with you at all times in case stopped by the police (although most areas will be lenient and let you produce a photocopy of your photo pages and the entry visa page).
      Also remember that if you don't have a licence to ride a bike and the correct International Driving Permit, your insurance is invalid.

    • @kylerasmussen1455
      @kylerasmussen1455 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      brvandal when travelling like this your passport goes everywhere. You don't protect your information with copies. No one keeps your passport forever. Maybe 15 years ago.

    • @ve9541
      @ve9541 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually that's happend a lot that u have to leave your passport at the office. Not just on Thailand. Of course u need to have a copy.

    Thanks for the video! Now I know how northern Thailand looks like) I've read about many people visiting it, but I always choose beaches))) it's so impressive to me that you are able to drive motorbike) did you learn driving motorcycles somewhere or have you just gotten the hang of it the first time you tried? Also, random question - do you have a padi certificate? Are you planning on diving or snorkeling anytime soon when you get to the coast?

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dana N My very first visit to Pai, my guesthouse owners taught me in their driveaway. They had me practice doing figure 8s b/c turning wasn't easy for me and the gh was further from town.
      I have a PADI & Advanced SSI. I just did a liveaboard in the Similan Islands, which I filmed and I'll post after I finish my other destinations. I shared that news on my FB page. =) Are you interested in diving?

    • @Stellmaria23
      @Stellmaria23 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very nice of your gh owners) When we tried to practice driving the motorbike, its owner just laughed at us and a local oldman who was passing by just told us it was a bad idea for us to drive it))) guess it looked really bad))) So we gave it back and didn't explore other beaches except for patong
      I am very interested in diving) I tried it for the first time on Phi Phi, and loved it! We wanted to dive near this sunk ship there, but it turned out you need to have a PADI for that))) silly of us) so they took us on the beginners diving spots, and I loved it so much) now I'm thinking of getting a PADI during the next holiday. But we probably need to practice in a swimming pool here, cause my girlfriend couldn't dive, she got too scared of the compressed air feeling, you now how it seems that you can't breathe fully at first.

    1:55ff - "...and drive around on a motorbike and see all this nature."
    Should be more like "...and see all these denuded hills deprived of their formerly lush rain forest cover."

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Schmid You're probably thinking more of Malaysia or Indonesia; they're closer to the equator than Northern Thailand. Rainforests are not typically Thai terrain. North might have more hilly terrain, karst mountains maybe, with more tree growth like Chiang Dao? (th-cam.com/video/FnJc5dF6dys/w-d-xo.html) , but I wouldn't quite call it "jungle ", either
      I kinda know what you mean. haha.Thailand is changing like the rest of the world, but I like that doing so slowly compared to other countries. =D

    • @thaitom6410
      @thaitom6410 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa I'm afraid you are not entirely correct there, Christine. The original tree cover of the hills of northern Thailand - which is still in the sub-tropical zone - was montane rain forest (as opposed to tropical rain forest such as in Malaysia and Indonesia). And where elevations exceed 600 or 700 meters (which is rarely the case in northern Thailand), this changes to temperate-climate deciduous forest. But my real point was that the natural tree cover is pretty much gone - and regardless whether it once may have been montane rain forest or deciduous forest - thanks to rampant illegal logging that proliferated especially in the 1980s and well into the 1990s. Nowadays most hills are either completely bare or have re-grown a few shrubs and smaller trees (a.k.a. degraded forest).
      On another note, when I visited Pai in the late 1980s, it still was a beautifully quiet town enveloped in densely forested hills and practically devoid of any foreign tourists. Oh, and there was no way one could indulge in fruit shakes or banana pancakes either, nor spend an evening in a string of excessively noisy bars and karaoke shacks. Just like elsewhere, the dubious I-am-oh-so-ethnic backpacker set has helped to change all that; and not necessarily for the better. I've been living in Thailand for almost 30 years now, and am avoiding more and more of the places that used to be personal favorites, because I don't want to constantly run into soul-searching, dreadlocks-brandishing, fisherman's trousers-wearing, self-appointed philosophers gorging themselves day-in, day-out on allegedly ethnic foods like muesli and strawberry yogurt.
      I do enjoy your vlogs, though. You're trying to tread a middle path and obviously also do some research before you visit places. Let's meet up for a drink after your next dentist appointment in Bangkok.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Schmid Interesting and thanks for sharing. I appreciate your passion! Sadly, with tourism and commercial development, no place is left untouched. There's always a controversial love-hate with the hippie over-transformation of Pai and i'm more turned off with tourist's party habits and blatant disregard for dress etiquette. When I was there in 2009, it was just turning. It's only gotten MORE. But it is a unique type of region, Thai artists are attempting to sculpt it into a contemporary/designerly fashion and it attracts different travelers as say.. Phuket.
      I will burst your bubble and say I'm a UGE fan of the fruit shakes in Thailand (cause all that carnation milk can go to your waist) and have been in love with those fisherman pants for years. Those fishermen knew what they were doing by making them! =) Next time i'm in Bangkok, would love to meet up.!

    • @thaitom6410
      @thaitom6410 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Just got a little carried away by my passionate feelings, I guess, because in fact I DO like the occasional fresh fruit shake. But I would never (as in never EVER!!!) wear fisherman's pants even if my life depended on it - or socks with sandals, for that matter ;-) Look me up on LinkedIn for a fruit shake, beer, cocktail or a big, big jug of Carnation milk. Unlike on Facebook, I only accept very select few into my LinkedIn circle.
