@@DanegerAndStacey wonderful, thank you. It's important to me to see elephants but not abused elephants. Was thrilled to see your bit and look forward to adding this on.
Additionally, do you have any guidance on scooter hire? Rough costs in AUD or NZD? Very much appreciated!

What I like about your video is that you spent enough time in Chiang Mai to actually get a feel for the city. I hate videos in which the visitor says, "This is the best (whatever the attraction is)" when they have no clue. I would note, Flight of the Gibbon has had several fatalities in the last several years. The Samoeng Loop is always fun and it's a great warm-up if one is going to do the Mae Hong Son loop. 350 miles with 1864 curves. Nimman area is a lot younger than the old city, the wall itself is around 730 years old.The Green Market down the back street (Ratchapuek) from The Salsa Cafe has pictures of Nimman when it was rice land with no buildings.Wat Doi Suthep is a place to avoid during Thai holidays as one can barely move it's so crowded. The road from the peak or Doi Suthep to the higher point, Doi Pui, has been paved recently and there are sit-down restaurants near the entrance to Puphing Palace. MAYA is Thai for Magic.I have lived in Chiang Mai 4 years and am still surprised by the things I discover. Nice vid!

Just got back from my Chiang Mai vacation..loved it. We did The Elephant Nature Park..please make sure you never go to any elephant place where you ride them!! If they are riding them, they have had their spirit broken. The park we went to, the elephants were rescues..most were hurt and healed, blind, toothless...if left they would die. Such an amazing experience. Thanks for the video!! I will return to Thailand but this time close to the ocean, maybe the islands!!

love love love our video of Chiang Mai. We are escaping cold NZ ( Tauranga) in 3 weeks and heading to Thailand. We were debating whether it was worth heading north to Chiang Mai as we didn't know if there was much to do, but after watching this, we have booked the over night train from Bangkok and will be arriving on the 3rd August. Can't wait.

After reading a couple of articles about top things to do in Chiang Mai, I wasn't sure I wanted to spend too much time there. But after watching this video it has definitely changed my mind! I love the casual tone your video takes, versus being very imperative about where we must go or what we must do. Can't wait to go in two weeks!

Nice video guys. I go to Chiang Mai 2-3 times a year and is a great escape from HK. I have to make a further suggestion on visiting the Doi Suthep temple. Going up that road is only any good on a road bike where you grind a heavy gear and give the lungs a session. In the morning you find plenty of 'this life rocks' to ride with and its total fun then screaming back down! BUT to enter the realm of true awesomeness you have to run up along the Pilgrims trail. It's a tough hike for most people but get some strength in your legs and try and run it - it is total fire! Then at the top get some watermelon or mango juice from the villagers and get ready to bomb it back down! Total ankle breaking potential fun!

let me just say that I am not a coffee snob or a connoisseur I drink maybe two cups of coffee per week in the United States Thai coffee is so delicious I found myself having one or two per day. if you are an avid coffee drinker whether you like it cold hot fancy or plain you're going to love Chiang Mai coffee and let's not forget the tea so delicious and so many flavors. the one thing that was absent from the list which surprised me a lot was Thai massage. I recommend Viang Ping Massage & Spa very professional and skilled masseuses they are not the cheapest parlor but they are very professional and family-friendly.

Hi, thanks for the video. I was wondering if you could tell me more about renting a scooter. Is it expensive? Is there anything I should be aware off? One of my friends told me about possible scams when renting the scooter. This will be my first time travelling to Chiang Mai or Asia in general. I want a scooter to go to the sticky water falls, the temple on top of the mountain and the elephant sanctuary. What do you think is the best way to go from place to place? Thank you again!

5 or 6 nights is plenty to do a lot of these things, most of them are only half day type activities. Staying in the old town is more traditional, Nimman is our favourite because of the cool cafe scene and restaurants there

Great video! Planning to go next week and this video convinced me to spend more days in chiang mai than bangkok! I just want to ask how to get around chiang mai and which is the best place to stay? My husband and I will be taking the train from bangkok which is super exciting. Thanks in advance!

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Happy to hear that! The best way to get around is either Grab or hailing a Songtaew, which we love doing for the local experience. But in general, CM is very walkable and the experiences you do (elephants, zip lining, cooking etc) will all collect you from your hotel anyway. Best to stay in the old town square walls (or close to) or the newer area known as Nimmanhaemen which is where the cooler, newer cafes and area of CM is developed.

About the sanctuary you are recommending!
No riding does not equal ethical. It’s just less unethical!
Me and my girlfriend were skeptical about the elephant experiences offered. We chose this one because of a personal recommendation, to find out that our advisor probably was just overwhelmed by the experience and did not notice the little signs. (Tranquilizer Dart, read below)
We kept a bit in the background and observed (though we did touch the elephants) and took some pictures.
From the beginning the other visitors where very keen on touching, cuddling the elephants and we felt the urge to leave them in peace and would have wanted the guides to hold back the others. Instead they encouraged everyone.
“The Elephant touching experience” by itself is definitely interesting, but it would have been enough to just observe them.
On occasion you could tell that the elephants were really afraid of the guides.
They had a rotating system, so the groups of elephants were visited (hugged, touched, over fed?) by at least two groups of visitors, they did not really have much time for themselves.
We thought that we‘re probably a bit neurotic and overly concerned and went on with the schedule until the bathing in the river.
Though the elephants calfs really enjoyed their bath and played there was a point were they had to leave the place (we were at a pond overlooking but also lured to take a bath in the beautiful pool below a waterfall). One of the baby elephants suddenly got a bit over the top and wild and the guides changed their behavior, before they seemed very relaxed (there were no tourists near the elephant). They started boxing it rather firmly in the back which at first looked a bit like just a playful reminder BUT then suddenly there was something sticking in the elephants back and was quickly, with a slick move removed by the guard. Must have been a tranquilizer dart...
This was when it all fell apart for us.
Just before a guide had told us that we had to produce natural medicine balls (rice, banana and other stuff) for the elephants because they apparently constipated very easily.
I‘m a doctor and really was wondering, since the sanctuary controls the diet and why would this be a problem?
In humans constipation is caused by lack of physical activity, bad diet, or Pharmaceuticals, especially Tranquilizers or Morphine.
This is just speculation, but in the aftermath they did not look very vital and rather passive and had an astonishing endurance of people constantly touching and whirling around them.
My first guess would be Ketamin, but how to tell.
The Dart in the elephants body and the eagerness of the guide to quickly remove it so nobody noticed stayed in our heads. There could have been an explanation, but this should not be noticed by someone, and probably isn’t often since everyone is usually distracted and the guards are obviously trained for these situations... their movement was incredibly ninja...
Maybe there is a „good“ explanation for this, but there is no explanation that would make it up for me or my girlfriend, since this situation of agitation happend as a direct consequence of constant contact with selfie-ing boundary crossing tourists.
i won‘t judge if someone is looking for the incredible experience of touching an elephant, but in this quantity of people you should probably keep in mind that there is a really high chance of the elephants just being drugged to be able to endure it.
I am to sensitive for that. We spoke to others about what we saw, but some just gave us an „oh“ and switched the topic. We didn’t address it in public and were even a bit scared and felt like we saw something we should not have seen, but maybe that’s just us.
If you want an ethical experience, don’t expect a lot of contact and google „the guardian elephant sanctuary“ for a newspaper article about ethical sanctuaries, we found after the trip :*-(

Also, as a person who has already been to Chiang Mai, I agree with all the things you've listed. In fact, if I was to make a to-do list, I'd probably list the very same things. Priority would've been a little different, but that's just because I loved Thai coffee shops so much. :) But other than that -- I absolutely agree, your list is a must-see & must-do!

No worries! Scooters are sketchy in Chiang Mai now, you'll get picked up and need to pay a fine on the spot if you go through a Police spot. Best to have an IDP AND a motorcycle licence now sadly

Definitely agree with all of these. Awesome job!! We did all of those except Mae Song and Mon Jam, so will add those to our next visit & I'd like to do Sticky Waterfalls. Loved the Elephant Sanctuary, you could see the people who worked there were really passionate about caring for the Elephants. Cleaning them in the river was cool, a little rocky.
Ziplining in the jungle was one of the best experiences ever. We did it with Jungle Flight & agree the guides were the best. We had like an 8 year old girl on ours, who was scared of nothing. 😂 We always felt so safe in Chiang Mai.
Maya Mall had really delicious & cheap food too. Ate plenty of Khao Soi & Mango Sticky Rice.
Into the Woods was by far my favourite cafe. Everything we had there was perfection.
Another epic vlog, thanks for sharing 😀
