It's actually a good movie .My review may sound strange and illogical but what I observed is that this movie is a ultra nationalist movie.Swastik Steeel represents prosperous Bharat of past,invaders from desert wants to loot and overtake this comapny , Anil kapoor damaad represents Jaichand who opens door from inside , hindus and sikhs are shown a single family who fights together against invaders.Anil kapoor family practice all sanatan rituals.Ranbeer Kapoor represents current stern and violent nationalist resistance against current invaders.Ranbir knows how to deal with wolves who comes in hordes hidden behind a mask. .It's not a toxic masculinity movie which many are claiming.
Ranbir and Rashmika marriage represents NORTH -SOUTH hindu unification.

You know I don't watch Bollywood. Since the last 7-8 years. Much before the boycott bollywood calls began. I have never seen a web series ever. Hollywood, like once a year. Got no time for low standard content, desi or American.
But I had a gut feeling: 'Animal should be watchable'! Gambled and stepped in a theatre after long. And was totally thrilled with what I saw.
I am a fan of Ranbir Kapoor. Since Wake Up Sid Days. I was always just short of chapri worshipping him like ardent Chapri fans of Srk and Salmon bhai.
But that didn't make me watch craps like Shamshera or that movie with Shraddha Kapoor (what was the name of the movie, ugh). Or for that matter Jagga Jasoos, eeewww. I am not a blind fan.
But I had an instinct that Animal is where Ranbir will be allowed to play. And I was thrilled beyond expectations. What a movie. Ranbir has surpassed Rocket Singh, Wake up sid (Yes, this movie matters), Barfi, Tamasha or dare I say, Rockstar level.
Despite being a Nepo Kid, he's the only privileged star son who takes his craft seriously. Ever since he started. Its just the low IQ of Indians producers and directors who would not approve a good script where (good) actors are allowed to play.
Ranbir shines when he gets a good script and a good director. I am glad they mentioned him as Superstar Ranbir in credits. It's high time we topple the Khan government, none of which acted well ever. Perhaps the low IQ desi janta deserved the Khans.
Talking about Animal, this movie is a genius. Many shocked uncles and aunties have failed to see the genius behind the gore. And trust me, its not even violent. I have seen far more violence in other non Indian movies. (Hollywood/French etc).
Gripping story (Yes, it has one), well crafted scenes (each one of them), kickass performances, several nuanced historical parallels (save the land from returning invaders?), Mahabharatesque drama etc are some of the highlights of Animal.
I also love how stylish this movie is. I also personally feel that the shorter Dil Hai Chota Sa entry of Ranbir was way cooler than the more popular Jamal Kudo entry of Bobby. The Marathi, Not Swiggy guy and the DJ song during apocalyptic war in the hotel was epic. So was the Jija killing scene and the accompanied bgm. Small scenes like killing of body double of Anil was impact ful too. I love that so much attention to writing is done on this movie.
Of performances, apart from the brilliant Ranbir, every actor play their part with aplomb. Be it Suresh Oberoi, Ranbir's sister, mother, Sikh cousins or family of Bobby, performances are par excellence. Even Shakti Kapoor in a Sattvik role excels. He suits the role of rich, clean, dependable uncle cum emotional anchor of Ranbir perfectly.
I never like Anil Kapoor. But even he amazed me with his brilliant nuanced performance. I dunno why many didn't enjoy Rashmika. I think she was brilliant. It's the first time I saw her movie. Ranbir as the butcher Aziz in the end was goosebumps. Some cinematic brilliance this.
I don't listen to current Bollywood music. Current Punjabi music is eeeewww anyways. But I am hooked to songs of Animal. Arjan Vailly is goosebumps. Maybe coz its a song, rooted in history and not by some moose foose. Pahle bhi main is amazing too. Why's Vishal Mishra not famous?
Honestly. I found it a very intelligently made film. I didn't find Ranbeer's character misogynist either. And even if he is, it's just a character. He gets slapped by his wife many times, encourages his sister to stand for herself and take charge, respects his mother. Regrets and confesses infidelity. Gets slapped again. She throws her laptop away. He helps her with her pregnancy. Where is misogyny?
Abrar's (Bobby Deol) character is rather a misogynist. As for violence, it's nothing really. I have seen more violent non Indian movies. Dunno, what the issue is. It's a brilliantly made film. Had Hollywood made this, same naysayer Indians would have gone gaga.
I started writing 'things' 23 years ago in the year 2000. Till 2007 I used to write only on movies in Filmfare. Then I stopped writing on movies as a personal policy coz waste of time. This is also when i started traveling solo. In a way, end of love for Bollywood was replaced by new found love for travel. 15 years on, the 7 years itch didn't happen with travel. 😎✌🏼

Bro I disagree. Ranbir took it all if we go by proper acting. Its ok to perform characters in short stints. But it takes true actors to sustain that throughout. Ranbir literally showed entire range with nuance from teenage to the old age. He had more conviction than anyone else in the film. He did not overact. He didn't miss a single beat in the entire. Its his performance that binds you to the screen. He literally showed you stages with nuance in the performance. He does not even shout to show rage in the film. One minute you feel the fury and he calms in the very next. Anil played it one dimensional. Not saying it was bad or something. But the performance was unidimensional. RK carried the entire film. He was the strongest pillar in the film. Its sad that you would discredit his capability and say he was the third. He showed you an entire arc layers throughout. You like Abrar and Balbir more because their scenes had shock values. But thats not where you assess the acting. Its in nuance

First of all, I didn't get why leftists are annoyed with the movie. In the first half, where he kissed his girlfriend in front of everyone, I thought wokes must appreciate such scenes because that's what breaking barriers in love. @@Msnovy Okay, I agree with your point, but that's the story of the majority of Indian movies. It's unfortunate. Didn't you feel bad in "Sacred Games" where Nawazuddin forced her wife for oral sex. Didn't you feel offended that time ? Misogyny is prominent not just in Indian cinema but also in world cinema. But targeting one single film just for the misogyny is not something logical I found. If we consider today's morality standards of wokes, then perhaps Tare Zameen Par will also be considered a bad movie in light of morality. For 70 years, women have been objectified through item songs in India. Did you feel anything bad about that . even during the 60s, 70s, 80s, so-called Golden period of hindi cinema. Even lyrics were misogynistic. Today, we consider all those lyricists greats. So your point is quite valid but if we want to judge everything on that parameter the perhaps ban all the movies and only show science programs like discovery, net geo because you don't know this wokes would object bad influence in Cartoon too. Because there is a ton of misogyny in public favorite movies like Hum Sath Sath hain or Kuch Kuch hota hain or Baazigar etc.

That is a logic that has no valid argument. We had movies and songs internationally that had racism in it, but as we really understood it is wrong, movies changed that culture. Even now Hollywood or other movies get criticism for objectifying men, women or glorifying violence.
Even Tarentino is seen as a mad director by a lot of mainstream directors and people are openly criticising it.
No director gets agitated by it because they expect such criticism. No fans of the movies defend those movies by calling gore right or human abuse as a joke.
Misogyny is there in world cinema and all of them are getting brutally criticised for it. People are, women are indeed avoiding such movies. It also means those women are avoiding movies that forces men to be toxic or objectified. A truely woke person is sensible to human beings and things that promotes injustices in the society. You might not have met an honet person who truly vocal about social injustices against everyone, but I have. Bigots are not woke people. They are just dishonest weak people who act woke to criticise one thing only. Idiots are those who defend social injustice because they are fan of a person ( be it Ranbir or anyone else). Ask yourself why would you like something that does a pisstake on your morality?
It means either your morality is fake and like anyone who breaks it or you are weak and want some dabang type criminal validate your bigoted actions.
There has been movies where rape was sexualised in Bollywood movies, that era is gone because we have become more aware of our social issues. This movie was so preachy and it felt like ( not the character) but the director himself wants to propagate misogyny. When you read a book author show certain characters in certain lights, certain events in a way, as a whole you can then decide who is lead, who was good or bad etc. even bad characters are made to be fall in love with but what they do is never glorified.
In this movie director made the characters so hateful a big chunk of people couldn’t connect to it. It was not portrayed as misogyny as bad but as a genuine acceptable character of the lead, that women are falling in love with.

Because if young people can get inspired to commit crimes after watching Oscar winning movies like "Joker." Then we should not have any movies at all. Recently, in West, one girl did commit a crime after watching Joker. By your standards, there should be no movies because violence is also as much a threat for society. My morality is not bigoted. That's why I said it's unfortunate movies show that. I just have a problem with selective criticism of morality. If you want to be moral, then remove all bad things from the movies not just one aspect, whether it's curse words, misogyny, adultery, or violence etc every thing which is wrong in the light of morality. You don't have control from which scene crinimal would take inspiration . It's like in Avengers you don't know many people like Thanos, so despite showing him as villain or anti-hero you don't have control which people would like it and would take inspired from that character to commit crime just as I gave you example about Joker. So don't call my morality fake. I am more than happy if they remove all the stuff which creates problems but I challenge you then also you won't be able to show movie Because by today's woke morality standards you can take offense from anything even from someone's clowth or addressing. It's not only some serious stuff like misogyny, violance, they do take offense on dumb stuff, too. By today's morality standards, 3 idiots is a bad movie because it shows teacher harrasing students and suicide. You don't have control despite showing suicide is bad in the movie. From initial scenes, if some boy felt connected, then he can definitely attempt sucide . 🤷🤷 you don't have control over what people will decide from the bad acts of crinimals in the movie despite showing them glorified or not glorified at the end. So it's better to ban all this stuff and show only the science channels. So please don't come after me, I am happy to ban the whole movie industry. Because I can find every social evil in every movie, including your favorite one if you tell me.

But the movies that are not good because of stupid plot and flat characters are not appealing. My personal opinion is my personal view, that I would not impose on anyone.
You seem to see the world in a 2 dimensional way. Black or white. I understand there are multiple shades of morality and characters and a good director knows how to make adjustments for all or most. You can’t force people to like ir dislike something. This movie was a cringe and shows no sensibility or creativity in the story.
3 idiots will be a great film despite it’s casual sexism. Because the protagonist doesn’t claim to be all powerful, he humbles himself for the consent of the girl on his knees, to break off the wedding.
There are small nitty gritty moments that is the difference between sensible and insensitive. It’s the thing that makes or breaks a movie. If you knew it , you would be a director. If a director knew it, they would be able to make movies that don’t run on shock value.
Also your whole nonsense argument about just watch nat geo is a child like thinking. People can like or dislike and share their opinions. No matter what you say I won’t watch things according to your logic.

It’s the same logic as if saying, oh god! We have pollution in everything so lets stop eating, drinking or breathing. So, people those who work against pollution should they stop? Should you stop being aware of the pollution? Should you stop caring about pollution in Delhi during winter and just breathe that air without complaining. Or drink contaminated water without much concern?
Misogyny is the same for women. So those who are concerned will criticise the polluted minds as a natural consequence.

Abrar haq and Rannvijay are identical characters. If you see story from abrar point of view its still same. Father is replaced by grandfather. 1 wife +1 EMA matches with 3 wives. Rannvijay is deaf. Abrar is mute. Both are hyper sexual. Both are intelligent.
So director did not glorified any side. In animal park, director hints Rannvijay going is going to face consequences. So director is balancing well
