There is no one with better man on the streets interview questions than Huell. He had a specialty people quality that is sorely missing today. His child like ability to take a common object and make it seem like the world could not go on without it. He made every person interviewed feel important from the lowest to the highest. His ability to be surprised and amazed by things so common that most of us would miss it. He truly had the ability to stop and smell the roses and he drew us all in. What I wouldn't give to wander California and do interviews like Huell.
IDK, I live in Red Bluff and in the springtime this is what it looks like around here. The Sacramento River goes right through the center and as you approach the mountains on both sides of the town you pass through many areas where the snow is melting overflowing the creek banks. We still get salmon that swim upriver from the San Francisco delta to spawn here. You can be in Eureka and the Redwood forests at the Pacific Ocean in 4 hours through the mountains.
I used to drive the Ortega Highway & hike the trails around Ortega Falls regularly in the 90's & never found out about the nearby Starr Ranch. What a shame. I don't live so close anymore. But there are still many wild areas around SoCal, despite their rapid demise. But ya better get out there before it's too late! And for God's sake, please don't trash it!!
No, we're in Bell Canyon. Right now our access road to the HQ is fine even with two creek crossings, but down canyon is muddy and has much more water. BTW, Starr Ranch is not open to drop in visitation, but you can see ways to visit us at starrranch.org/PDF/visitStarrRanch.pdf Pete

As of 2013 California's Gold episodes from 1991-2012 continue to be shown on KCET despite Huell Howser's retirement and death.
