Acorn Woodpeckers drilled a few holes in a porch roof and over several years kept pushing in acorns that they ultimately could not retrieve. So not good for the roof, but not good for them either...
Acorn Woodpecker interaction

Acorn Woodpeckers have an interesting social structure. This video may have been a "battle" between two rival "clans".

Mule deer spike buck at Starr Ranch. Cryptorchidism causes his antlers to not shed the "velvet" and continue to produce odd shaped bumps. This is an uncommon condition and appears that it doesn't affect overall health.

In June 2020 we were able to have the Audubon Starr Ranch main access road repaired through the wonderful generosity of Joann and Frank Randall. It's about 1.25 miles long and had many sections that were badly damaged by time and, more important, flooding during years of high rainfall. City Service Contracting did the work using 930,000lbs of asphalt, 250,000lbs of road base and 30yds of concre...
Starr Ranch BunkHouseBobcat 6-3-20

A bobcat surprised me from a few feet away when I went to take out the trash. Was totally calm and then proceeded to casually walk around our house and the adjacent bunkhouse before walking down Bell Canyon.
Jack and Sergej going to BAEA nest in the 60's, maybe.

Jack Holt and Sergej Postupalsky are iconic to anyone who's ever worked with raptors. They, in their own different ways, did more than most to protect and save raptors threatened by so much. They're both gone now but their legacies lives on. RIP, my good friends and mentors, Jack and Sergej.

Let native nature thrive and come back
There is no one with better man on the streets interview questions than Huell. He had a specialty people quality that is sorely missing today. His child like ability to take a common object and make it seem like the world could not go on without it. He made every person interviewed feel important from the lowest to the highest. His ability to be surprised and amazed by things so common that most of us would miss it. He truly had the ability to stop and smell the roses and he drew us all in. What I wouldn't give to wander California and do interviews like Huell.
As of 2013 California's Gold episodes from 1991-2012 continue to be shown on KCET despite Huell Howser's retirement and death.
Look over here Camron!
IDK, I live in Red Bluff and in the springtime this is what it looks like around here. The Sacramento River goes right through the center and as you approach the mountains on both sides of the town you pass through many areas where the snow is melting overflowing the creek banks. We still get salmon that swim upriver from the San Francisco delta to spawn here. You can be in Eureka and the Redwood forests at the Pacific Ocean in 4 hours through the mountains.
They look so good! Thank you for the lovely memory, Pete 😊
God and people bless these people for their work💌
Absolutely Stunning, Pete. Thank you so much for posting. 😁
I used to drive the Ortega Highway & hike the trails around Ortega Falls regularly in the 90's & never found out about the nearby Starr Ranch. What a shame. I don't live so close anymore. But there are still many wild areas around SoCal, despite their rapid demise. But ya better get out there before it's too late! And for God's sake, please don't trash it!!
Wow, that is an oldie. I wonder if that is Vern Bernard piloting? This sure brings back memories of hiking through the woods and watching Jack climb. Thanks so much for sharing.
You remind me of Huel Howser from California Gold. th-cam.com/video/zPv7DCkOTdA/w-d-xo.html
no its HOUEL HUESER
I heard they hung ppl at blackstar ranch in the old days
WHATS THIS CREEK AGAIN?
That's part of the charm of Huell.
I love Starr Ranch I’ve been there many times :)
Is that Blackstar Canyon?! Wtf you can't drive there now. I hike there all the time.
No, we're in Bell Canyon. Right now our access road to the HQ is fine even with two creek crossings, but down canyon is muddy and has much more water. BTW, Starr Ranch is not open to drop in visitation, but you can see ways to visit us at starrranch.org/PDF/visitStarrRanch.pdf Pete
Pete DeSimone Thank you! I actually thought this was Blackstar Canyon. Also, your last name is my first name haha.
So missing you Mr Howser ... So missing you.
I had the pleasure to meet Huell in 2004. May he rest in peace.
Another Great Episode
thank you for the video Pete DeSimone! beautiful and much appreciated
Sure do miss him.
IS HE IN A COVERED WAGON!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!? HOW DID HE FIND THIS PLACE
Old California is the best! My roots, beautiful. Secluded.

Amazing Pete.. Made my day. Oh to hold one just for a second.. Great video. Your passion shows .. (smile)
Thanks for sharing the banding, very interesting.
OMG, Pete. I will keep you guys in my thoughts and hope that the future storms will be light. Bell Creek is waaaaay too close. PaulaP
Wow, that's pretty rough! Thanks goodness it's not any worse, and nobody was hurt.
