Can SSRI's bring on a psychotic episode? My good friend has become acutely unwell and complety psychotic after being put on SSRI's twice. The drs are not sure if he has schizoaffective disorder or schizophrenia. He is lovely and highly intelligent. Just periodically looses touch with reality. Big love to all
Jo M The short answer is: psychosis in response to SSRI treatment is a rare occurrence but is nonetheless possible as a side effect. SSRIs are likely to turn on the gene associated with bipolar if you are predispositioned genetically for bipolar. And SSRIs can definitely bring on an episode of psychosis.
Why does your brain want to figure out the significance of a stimulus? Is this relevant to survival? Or just to stave off boredom? Survival. How does the brain become aware of a stimulus? Senses. If your senses work differently, as they do in schizophrenics, could this cause a differences in dopamine, especially when you consider the development of the brain?
