- Today we have a finger painting day with our macaw Cheyenne, tegu Ally, and alligator Rex! The canvases turned out even better than we expected :D They will be auctioned off on the Snake Discovery Facebook page here:

Emily and Ed stage-momming and baby-talking their 4 foot alligator is just the funniest thing to me. Like, she could seriously injure them, but she is also their spoiled child.
She is also older than them iirc. So it makes it a little bit more funnier 🤣

Right, those two are very lucky to have an alligator who is super chill and lazy. Not everyone can claim they can free-handle an alligator and not worry about loosing fingers or more. xD

Yeah I am continually amazed by Rex's temperament, before I started watching this channel I wouldn't of thought it possible have such a relaxed interactions with an alligator.
If you guys ever go for this project again, priming the canvases in Snake Discovery green and using black for the prints will make dramatic and distinct prints and show of that Snake Discovery pride!
Or do green and silver for the Slytherin pride

@@lostwings183 painting over black is a pain... I always put a white layer under the colour, it's the only way to be able to see it
It's so great to see Cheyenne seeming to be doing so well with her sweaters! I remember that it was a struggle to find ones that she didn't immediately destroy, but now I've seen her wearing them for multiple videos. Hopefully they help her stay warmer in the cold months; she looks very sharp in them!

That just got me. Its a physical reminder of how much better Rex has it now. She used to live in a box around that size, and now she's finally been able to grow enough that she doesn't fit anymore.
The fact that she can actually stand now instead of pushing herself around on the ground is also so wonderful.
Seeing her stand tall is so great to see.

@@toni-leerumsby8008 I'm assuming you're wondering what Song of Shadow meant. Sorry if you meant something else, but I'll give you a summary in case.
Basically Rex is a rescue from a guy who kept Rex in a really small area and absolutely did not take care of her properly, which is why she has a lot of health issues such as an upturned snout.
If Rex was not a rescue, Emily and Ed would never get an alligator as a "pet" because they're not supposed to be pets, but in this case she wouldn't be able to survive in the wild, so they're giving her the best life that is possible for her now. She even has her own room (ideally it would be all of nature but... yeah).

For anyone wondering, this is a great form of enrichment for animals, but not every animal will enjoy/tolerate it. I've done this with bears, skunks, beardies, snakes, raccoons, and a blue tongue skink. For the beardies, one was very patient and did really well, but the second one did not like it one bit so it was a lesson learned (it helps to use treats as motivation). It's just about knowing your animal's temperament and Snake Discovery definitely knew who this would work for and who wouldn't before proceeding. This is something a lot of zoos do with their animals as well (i.e. the penguin foot prints you can buy in gift shops and the Fiona the hippo kiss prints, etc.) The type of paint used is always (or at least should always be) non-toxic paint like the tempera linked in the description. You should always read the label and make sure it is listed as washable and non-toxic, especially when you're using it with animals that you won't immediately get to wash it off of or who might ingest it while grooming (like bears, in my experience). And for anyone wanting to try this out, I highly suggest trying out different methods. "Dunking" is good for some animals, but like what was shown in the video painting a thin layer onto an animal's feet works better for some. Alternatively, you can paint the canvas in a solid color (or multiple colors) thin layer, let it get tacky, and then have an animal walk across it or press their foot into it to get a print that way (this works well for larger animals). Using an animal as a stamp is another method too, especially for animals that don't necessarily want to move. You kind of have to figure it out as you go. My personal favorite way to do paintings is to use gold tempera on a black canvas (you can get them in most hobby stores for the same price as white canvases) or dipping an animal in a rainbow line of paint dots and letting them walk/slide across a canvas (this works well for animals who are close to the ground, like snakes or some lizards). A note to everyone as well, some animals will make bigger messes than others so always have a lot of newspaper or a quarantined off area to do this in. XD Oh, and since it is a washable paint, sealing it afterward with some kind of coat protection spray can help the painting last a long time.

And animals with hands or trunks like using brushes! (Which you’d think wouldn’t include many pets, but apparently the exotic trade (at least in America) is alive and well. 😕) I have a lemur painting from the Duke lemur center; it was incredibly cute to see them just going at painting. Much toddler energy.

Emily holding up rex like a puppy to get their footprint is just so adorable for some reason. She's really calm around you guys and hearing that she doesn't fit in her container anymore just made me go aww she's a big girl now 🥺

I love how chill they were about it. Allie was squirmy, but only cause she was being held. Cheyenne had no idea what was going on, but trusts her mom. And Rex just resigned herself to her fate. I adore how much the animals trust Emily and Ed ❤️

Well, they feed her, give her a place to live, and are all good that she has known. I think animals have a way of knowing who to trust and believe.
As a teacher in childcare, I can relate to the struggle of getting paint onto feet in a nice layer! I recommend using sponges to apply the paint if you do it again. It gives you like a PERFECT layer of paint and it goes on feet super quick!

Watching her get all excited for bath time when she was still living in a pool in Ed and Emily's basement is kinda cute, ngl. She was so chillax just getting scrubbed down with soap, getting her rinse, having Emily move her legs around. Emily is definitely a very important person to her, and while she may be an apex predator worthy of respect, she's also an intelligent animal capable of understanding empathy and the care that she is given.

When it comes to the branching of the tree of life, you can't make a grouping that includes snakes, lizards, and crocodilians (definitely things that most people would call reptiles!) that does not also include birds. Therefore, birds are reptiles. Most birds even have scaly feet!

I was rewatching some of y’all’s older videos and it’s amazing how much healthier Rex looks compared to how she looked a few years ago! I wanted to say that the love and knowledge you’ve poured into her care definitely shows!
Every time I see Rex I am shocked at how big she is. She’s such a cute gator girl
A few years ago when I was painting with watercolor, I forgot the mixing plate with the wet paint on my desk and set my hamster down for a moment. She ran right through the paint. I still have today in a sketchbook her paw prints. A beautiful memory.
I did this once with my turtle. In fact I'm looking at the result right now. To any other person it may look like some random paint strokes a 2 year old did, but they're my 20 year old scaly boy's random paint strokes, very precious.
I have a feeling that this is gonna be funny with some of the animals. Emily already has messed up one and I already laugh. They mentioned tails and then laugh about the results that would happen. It sometimes looks like Ally is trying to lick the paint when she flicks her tongue out. I knew it, the tail would get in the way and laugh. I find it funny that she quit halfway through the painting and just didn't care

When rex is in HER enclosure at the facility you should set up a camera and see how she reacts the first day vs the 10 or 11 day. It is just a suggestion you don't have to knowing how much work it would need to set up the camera, keep up the good work 👍 😀 👌

one time I left wet paint open in my room, and long story short I have green paw prints from my late dog all over (I have tile floor in my room). I put off cleaning it up for awhile, and then when we had to put him down I decided to just leave them (or at least the more defined ones). I'm probably going to clean up all the smudges, maybe outline the prints, and seal in the tiles so they don't fade when I clean the floor.

Zoo's do this as a way to fund the animals as well, you could have small little versions of the paw-print paintings at your store, and use the funds for your adoption island!
