Trains at: Southall, GWML, 01/09/18

A very enjoyable afternoon/evening spent at Southall railway station on the Great Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from Great Western Railway, TFL Rail and Heathrow Express.
Southall station was opened by the Great Western Railway in 1839, one year after the line was officially opened. The station was much busier back in the old days as there was a branch line from Southall going to Brentford Dock which served as a passenger and freight route. Although at the start it was purely used for freight. The actual platform does still exist and can be seen during this film, its use nowadays is purely for a relief line. The line was opened in 1859 and was eventually closed in 1942. Southall station was opened with goods in mind and as such was given a goods platform from the word go, however this was eventually closed and taken apart in 1967.
An interesting addition to this station is the incorporation of bilingual signage used. This is because the local area is heavily populated by a large Punjabi community. So First Great Western as it was known in 2007 decided to bring the community closer to the railway.
The most noticeable feature of Southall is the engine sheds to the East of the station which serve as the London base of the West Coast Railways railtour company. During my stay here I could see 3 consists. Two of which were in working order and the third covered in graffiti.
Sadly though this station has not gone without incident, in September 1997 a Great Western Trains HST from Swansea to London Paddington collided with a freight train which resulted in the deaths of 7 passengers and injuring 139 others. The fault was put down to the driver of the HST failing to apply the brakes and acknowledging a a red warning light on the approach to the station. The HST collided with the rear of the freight train at 125mph.

Seeing the HST come to stop infront of me was something I didn't expect to see, couldn't work out what the issue was in the end but I'm sure someone will tell me in due course. Oddly enough I didn't actually eat anything before I started filming this

Hi mate the 800 on the front of the Swansea service was 024. Whenever Southall is mentioned I still think of that terrible train crash back in '97, or was it '96. I'm sure you will correct me. Anyway awesome video as always and keep up the good work.
