Always buy the best/most expensive ship you can get with real money. The idea of starter to mid tier ships is crap, always get end game ships. The idea of how many hours you’ll spend earning that end game ship will be outrageous over the starter / mid tier range. Start thinking of the ships you buy in terms of 10 year ownership, and not to buy ships you will sell for better ships when it comes to real money.
I've built my Fleet in a way that I can do most of the things I like with only those ships if necessary. - Terrapin - Boxes and Bunkers as well as some Exploration in the future - Banu Defender - A bit of Combat and Stanton-Taxi (And because it's hella pretty) - Prospector - Money printing. Making money while having a good relaxed time - MSR - Gank-safe Hauling and (later) Data running. I'm set for wipes and I can do almost everything with it. All roughly planned out even before I even started playing actively.
Solid advice. I have built my permanent fleet as a "Day One" fleet Nomad ROC (yeah, I know it's cheap in game, but I got it at the same time as the Nomad) Prospector Vulture (I hope Scrapping can be as profitable as mining... if not 120 month insurance) Gladius MSR (First ship I fell in love with at first sight)
Personally, I just am looking for the all 'rounder to build my fleet around. I'm thinking the Red since I like medical gameplay, it can do a bit of freight, carry a Roc to do a bit of mining, has decent guns for low level/easy PvE contracts and possibly some light PvP if necessary. Just seems a good "core" for me. Alternatively, I can use a C8R, but then I need something that can carry that, which...makes for larger/more expensive overall setups. Outside of that, I'm not entirely sure. A Ranger would be nice since they should fit in pretty much anything and be useful for traveling more or less unseen since they're supposed to have a lower sig than the hover bikes. I also think something like a P-52/72 or perhaps even better, Fury, would be nice since they can fit in most anything (I've seen a Fury someone loaded in the back of a Red/Blue), and could be used when linking up with an allied/org fleet so you can take part in the fighting if necessary. I wish there were smaller options for super entry level ship mining and salvaging - the Prospector, Expanse, and Vulture are too big to fit in a Red and are kind of expensive. I REALLY wish there was a MPUV mining ship (with a QT, obviously), as the "C8R of mining". That would be cool to me. But maybe the Roc can do. I'm really big about being able to load all my stuff up on one ship and move around with it, like if I want to leave system. Did this same thing in EVE where I liked not having more than I could load up on my biggest ship and move if I needed/wanted to. Which may mean I just need a Herc or Liberator (low crew requirement ships that can carry a lot), but I dunno, that's a lot of money. I know, my thinking is "too small", but I like to pace myself and deal mostly with small things I can solo but that I could do ops with other people if desired or play with 1-2 friends, like the Cutlass, Freelancer, and Connie type ships. Bigger stuff than that seems a bit much to me, and I'm not really interested in ships that have a crew requirement of more than 2 or so. Stuff I could potentially solo myself. But I don't know that I want to spring for a Liberator, Galaxy, or Hercules. Maybe if the Apollo has more room than the Red, I could consider it, but it doesn't seem as soloable until they get server blades for the turrets. Though I suppose that could be an option for me in theory.
You CAN now buy components and weapons, have them delivered directly from the Terminal to your ship (such as the Carrack) and fly them back to your home base, to then install onto their intended recipients.
@@silverthorngoodtree5533 I just bought a ton of components and guns, was going to fly them back to Everest Harbor, but I made a stop at an outpost somewhere. Where I spawned other vehicles, well I never exceeded respond vehicles at a time, they still stored my Carrack at The Outpost where it was unrecoverable. It wasn't millions, but WAS most of my money. I shrugged and said "I'd have lost it all In The upcoming wipe anyway"
I have a decent sized permanent fleet at 7 ships and 4 ground vehicles. Every one of them has a purpose, job, or supports at least 1 game loop. I saw a lot of people buying Mules for the cheap LTI but I kept 2 of mine. They are amazing for rolling into unfriendly bunkers with 6x micro SCU and 1x 1 SCU boxes and can haul tons back to my ship without having to worry about turrets.
Great guide! Despite liking many of the ships in the game, I own 3 of them, each with their own purpose: MSR for cargo hauling Sentinel for combat 325A for light combat, box delivery, and just cruising around When the Science game loop is introduced I'll pick up a ship for that.
I think the "buy big ships" idea only works out if you have a consistent group of friends to fill out those ships crews along with any support ships, like security.
At first I was buying almost every shiny ship I liked the looks of, but after awhile of playing the alpha and looking at what type of missions I preferred and enjoyed doing, I re-evaluated my hanger collection, and decided anything bought with real money was going to have a specific purpose. Cargo hauling is my main focus ranging from SCU and data (350R, MSR, C2, BMM, and maybe Hull D) to passengers (Spirit E1, Prowler, Apollo Medivac, and Genesis). Following cargo I have an interest for small scale salvage (Vulture) and some stealth combat (Eclipse). I've picked up a couple larger ships like the Pioneer and Endeavor as both I'd love to occasionally use with my org or hire a few people to help crew when a job comes in for either. Lastly, I like some of the limited ships/vehicles so the Dragonfly Yellowjacket, Mustang Alpha Vindicator, Nox Kue, Sabre Raven, and Ursa Rover Fortuna are all my collectables. I've left a couple ships to earn in-game and most vehicles as well so when the game is released I have personal things to work towards while taking jobs. For me, having a solid spread of ships to choose from for the roles I'm most interested in, and with ways to start and build a reputation in those roles, while keeping options to earn other ships will help me enjoy SC as best as possible when it gets released. That's my logic to it and with each new ship concept released I regularly re-examine my hanger to see if it would add to or replace something or if I even could use it.
Welcome back! I'm just shy of 15k pledged because I like the gold f8 and love supporting the project. My fleet is well rounded but the flagship is a Kraken.
Nice to see one of you vids again and some good thoughts were in this one. One point of contention however is your statement about having to individually fly your ships to buy and upgrade their components. We already have the ability to load all the desired components for your feet onto one ship and transport all those weapons and components to the location where all your ships are stored. The only restriction is in the size of the ship inventory of the vessel you choose to transport them in. A C2 or M2 will transport every component and weapon needed for even a sizeable fleet in one go with ease.
I agree! I have my favorite ship, and found I was wasting a lot on expediting it because it has a high claim fee. I ended up getting a second one in-game and it's awesome! I love it.
Large packages have caused me some headaches, and since I have a good deal of money sunk already, I'm moving more towards a few large ships for the bulk of my 'investment', and the rest taken up by some versatile small/medium ships.
I think this is the process most follow. You get to a point where you realise you may as well get the most for your support pledges. Nobody needs to pledge for ships, the idea is to pledge to support the game dev....BUT...If you are going to pledge beyond a starter package blowing your load on small/medium ships is a fool's errand. Literally the least efficient use of pledging.
I've been pledged for 2016, made Concierge in 2020. I plan on buying more but a ship every other year. That way I don't blow all my money away. Edit: I should also say my daily driver is my Warden and I'll never ever change it unless it gets completely nerfed to hell
In addition to ground vehicles I would say don't buy fighters. The meta and flight/combat models change constantly so the game itself will create hangar queens out of your favorite ship. You need one or two maybe if you want to play arena commander (recommended), but they are cheap enough that it's not a huge grind to buy them in game for PU use. Also you will get loaner fighters with your big cargo, mining or whatever ships to use in Arena Commander so there might not be any need to buy a fighter at all and have access to everything. The Arrow is pretty common as the loaner for many ships and it's a great fighter at the moment and great to learn on. If anyone wants to buy a Sabre let me know. :)
God I miss your fleet theorycrafting vids, and huge shoutout to rischwa for the CCU game app! Saved me so much $ and it's a million times easier than doing all the math alone
This purchase for entertainment will most likely provide fun and enjoyment for at least a decade to come, likely 2 or 3 times that long. Pretty good dollar to yay value imo.
This is the Fleet Pisces (from the Carrack) do the quick box missions and runabout Arrow - Combat Ship and Agile Flying Toy Cutlass Black - Work Horse for normal missions, FPS combat dropship and when crewed you can be a threat MSR - for important runs and when crewed is dangerous whilst looking great Carrack - The Mothership shame the Arrow doesn't fit, would like to tow the Cutlass and strap the arrow to the top deck
Amazing video, this is exactly what I needed to realign my actual wants and needs when it comes to actually playing the game long term 😊 If you just buy all the ships you eventually want to have, there is nowhere to go. So truely thank you for reminding me of that during IAE 2023, my wallet and brain are thankfull 😅
I have a ton of ships. I have a "hobby budget" that I can on pretty much anything. So several years ago I decided that Star Citizen was worthy, and I devoted most of that budget towards the game. And it really adds up quickly... a new ship here... a few Warbond CCUs there... You DO make valid points. There are a whole lot of them that I do not fly very often. But I am certainly going to want to have them once the game goes live. Just like I Want a well-stocked toolbox and not just two wrenches and a hammer. I may not use that TORX screwdriver often... But it's certainly essential when I need it. I'd say my ships that see the most use are the warden, the Carrack, C2, Connie, Pisces and MSR. (sometimes I'll binge the 325A) Ships that I love to take out for a spin include the 350R, Khartu-Al, Talon, P-72 and Defender. As well as the Hoverquad, dragonfly, Cyclone MT and URSA. The ion and Scorpius see action from time to time. But everything else just kind of sits there, mostly. Unless there is an event, and the Retaliator needs to come out. I do have what I call the day one Fleet written down somewhere. These are the ships and vehicles that I want to own in cash by the time the game actually launches. I don't want to have to earn them in game, which I think is going to be much harder than it is right now. And I am just too old to earn them all. I do not want the game to be a second job. I just want to be able to play it
I told myself i’d only have one ship and I made that decision with the buccaneer. Now I’m at the mercury, polaris, raven, c8x, nox, arrow, and legionnaire. I seem to forget and add something like a fool lol. So much for enjoying the gameplay and grind like those from a starter I might be jealous xD.
I was trying to advise people on the risk of game packages just yesterday. For what is worth, I advices player not to "duplicate" unless they are really sure about what they want, like 2 Caterpillar or Hercules, 2 Moles. Better keep some daily driver available, cheap to maintain for when cash are low after a wipe. No point in gettin a gladius and an Arrow, aCutlass and a freelancer, a F. Max and a Taurus, or a Taurus and an MSR as these ships do about the same things, but are not "endgame" professional tools. Also consider what kind of game style you like: if you play as a lone wolf, large multi crew ships can become a money sink, but if you often play with several friends, a Mole can be a better choice then a Prospector and a Carrack can become the jack if all trades that the game envision. Finally, for the CCU game, never buy an upgrade for a concept ship from what you have right now: buy the CCU on the available ships that has the closest target price instead, knowing you can buy it when the time is right and still lock the price of the ship you want at the concept phase. I have several 5-10$ CCUs on ships I know will go up in price, like the Banu Merchantman (M2) the Corsair (Taurus), the expanse (DUR), the Vulcan (Taurus), starting ships that mostly I don't own, knowing I will be able to buy the, or may be not, if the final ship, I bought the CCU for, won't suits me. I can always melt the CCU without affecting my current fleet. I currently have a 111$ CCU on an Apollo Triage over a Cutlass red and this is locking a lot of credits in place for a ship I don't even know if I will enjoy while forcing me to keep the Red (which is useless) in the hangar. As the sale in November will come, I plan to get rid of that CCU and buy new one over a Corsair or a Scorpion instead, which I will be able to buy with credits at a fixed price later if I'll fancy to apply that CCU once the Apollo ei become available.
For now, because we have one system, I have my MAIn ships either on planet or on orbital station for bigger stuff like reclaimer. Then a small fleet of "shuttles" that get me from place to place. My main base is MT. So my Connie, VG, and a few others are here, with Big ships in the main station in orbit. My sabre is built for stealth Merc work, So I have it parked above Lorville. My Multiplayer ships are located, somewhere in space I forget. You get the idea. Once there are multiple star systems, having 2 or 3 FAST quantum shuttles available, with your mission specific ships parked in convenient spots near where you will use them. Works well.
I got a great fighter (gladius) And I got a great hauler to make money to get anything else (C2) Still waiting on a daily driver (looking at MSR, 400i, and Freelancer MIS, and waiting for Corsair so I can make a decision from there) If the glad could fold its wings (which being a navy fighter it SHOULD) and so could put it in my C2 that would be my daily driver/pocket carrier like the Bebop.
While Star Citizen is NOT a scam, spending more than $40.00 for the basic game and ship is. DO NOT buy ANY ships until this game meets some sort of goal relevant to the 2012 promises. 2012: Space Exploration was voted by the "COMMUNITY" and the devs said "We will do it then" 2022: We have Shot guns, ice cub simulator, fire extinguishers, tanks, bed sheet simulator, prision uniforms, caves...Everything one needs for "Space Exploration" Not 2012: We will have 185 star systems you can visit 2022: 1/185 (That "1" is still unfinished btw)
Your 185 systems is such a stupid argument. You do understand that it was never going to be as detailed as they have made the planets they have now....there was not going to be these set cities with all of this detail and all these outposts. It was going to be boring ass planets like seen in NMS. I would rather them have less systems that have a lot of handcrafter detail as opposed to the crap found in NMS or that other dead space sim. Also they are releasing Pyro next year, or plan to. I have spent around 250 on the game and easily gotten that much out of the game thus far so I mean if people can afford it they sure as hell can buy ships. Not your money to cry over.
I got hooked bad with this game. I bought a $2700 package in 2014. It was terrible value but I wanted the limited edition ships. They removed the pack and replaced with a pack that had over 20 small ships. Over the past 8 years I have upgraded them, now they are mostly larger ships but I can't melt or rearrange my fleet so I have a bunch of ships that I will probably never use.
I would happily use both a scorpius and hurricane. Although they are mostly identical (well my interpretation of identical) if I play one long enough I get the feel of the other ones better. And switch over. I did also have the heart seeker at one time but it was so fragile that I only ever used it as a backup. But switched over to the eclipse or Retaliator depending on the situation and group
When the ion was released I had received the argo cargo from a friend joining. I then used that as an lti token to buy the ion and the ship was great, for that patch. Now I can't melt it and can only upgrade to a more expensive option which kinda sux at that price point. Just another thing to be a little careful of when using a free lti token cause they can't be melted unless I'm missing something please let me know. Great vid listened twice ty.
I agree with everything but I think LTI is going to be very important for the larger size ships or ships that are likely to be pirated and have limited ability to fend off pirating. This was a great video!
i plan on using a javelin with my orgs but i always think about a ship that only takes 1 person to run, having 2 is actually not a bad idea especially when the game goes live because that'll basically be pay to win mid maxing your characters rep cause less wait time which im down for loll
I didn't know about the CCU app. Very cool and not a surprise given the passion and capabilities of our community. Do we have a way to share our fleet list with our organization like we did with Fleet Manager?
To use them all, each will need to be staffed, outfitted, insured, maintained, and in the right location. Seems to me buying all the ships is buying a whole lot of decisions.
Buying a ship that you enjoy now doesn't mean you will like it when they have finished with their changes and the game releases. If you decide to support the game by pledging on a ship. I recommend buying based on the concept or professions you prefer. Not how it plays right now. Myself personally pledged for 1 ship in each category with CCU escape options just in case.
To me, the only benefit of LTI worth mentioning is when another highly anticipated game releases (like Fallout 5, 6, etc.) and you might stop playing SC for a few months. When you return, your ship will still have basic insurance, instead of possibly expiring, so maybe prudent to have at least 1 LTI ship, if you're the type to maybe stop playing long enough for all your ships' insurance to expire (not likely if you also have ships from the big sales with 10 year insurance). Other than that, I expect any other benefits to be negligible, excluding added grey market value. I'm guessing a character reset would return any irl-purchased ships lost/destroyed without insurance, so maybe LTI only spares you the remote possibility of a character reset in a very specific situation, and adds some irl resale value to your ships.
I would join your group in a second if you were still on mumble. I hate and will never use discrap again. Great video, although I still don't really understand it all. Melting, LTI, CCUs... I just want to play SC. Love your thoughts in not buying ships you don't need, my thoughts exactly. Dude jump back to mumble and this SC noob would jump in with you.

Nice video. Totally agree with the ideas about having a composition to easily start out with after a wipe
Yo, I just bought my second ship last night to prep for the wipe. First ship was the Gladius, second is the Cutty Black. Bring on the outposts!
Works well.
Excellent advice and spot on from my experience!
I got a great fighter (gladius)
And I got a great hauler to make money to get anything else (C2)
Still waiting on a daily driver (looking at MSR, 400i, and Freelancer MIS, and waiting for Corsair so I can make a decision from there)
If the glad could fold its wings (which being a navy fighter it SHOULD) and so could put it in my C2 that would be my daily driver/pocket carrier like the Bebop.
While Star Citizen is NOT a scam, spending more than $40.00 for the basic game and ship is. DO NOT buy ANY ships until this game meets some sort of goal relevant to the 2012 promises.
2012: Space Exploration was voted by the "COMMUNITY" and the devs said "We will do it then"
2022: We have Shot guns, ice cub simulator, fire extinguishers, tanks, bed sheet simulator, prision uniforms, caves...Everything one needs for "Space Exploration" Not
2012: We will have 185 star systems you can visit
2022: 1/185 (That "1" is still unfinished btw)
I own a Connie and it came with a loaner Arrow. Debating on getting a prospector in anticipation for this upcoming wipe
Thanks. Good thoughts; well spoken.
Always a good topic.
Good advices 👍🏼
You can melt packages and use a buyback token on them. Then wait for a big sale to build your fleet right using the rest of your credits
I agree with everything but I think LTI is going to be very important for the larger size ships or ships that are likely to be pirated and have limited ability to fend off pirating.
This was a great video!
It's good information. 👍 Thanks 😊
Thanks YB
BAH, My Jav#2 will be a day one ship. You know how many things I can ram with that thing before the hull goes?? :) hehehehehee
i plan on using a javelin with my orgs but i always think about a ship that only takes 1 person to run, having 2 is actually not a bad idea especially when the game goes live because that'll basically be pay to win mid maxing your characters rep cause less wait time which im down for loll
I didn't know about the CCU app. Very cool and not a surprise given the passion and capabilities of our community.
Do we have a way to share our fleet list with our organization like we did with Fleet Manager?
where is that CCU app? is there a link?
Fleetyards for org management, CCUGame for ez chain tracking
So. Buy a Gladius and a Cutlass. Got it.
PxP are good folks. I miss them but I struggle to play any games these days
I refuse to make decisions so I just buy everything.
To use them all, each will need to be staffed, outfitted, insured, maintained, and in the right location. Seems to me buying all the ships is buying a whole lot of decisions.
@@CapnSnackbeard I don’t use them. I just collect them.
@@jgun-tv thanks for funding the game! Enjoy!
have gone from Aurora - Cutlass Black - Retaliator Base
2:37 buying two ships with real money just to avoid a claim timer? I really don’t think that’s good advice.
Especially if you buy 2 eclipse. Sheesh.
When the claim timers go up considerably, as they are planned to do, you might reconsider that response. Lol.
LTI is so cheap and easy to get, there really is no reason not to have it on anything worth more than $50.
So in short buy what ever you want.....
