  • Hi everyone. And welcome to my new channel about 3D printing and all about it. In this video I would like to tell you about my small project. Duender - Conversion of two old Creality Ender-3 into one fast printer with CoreXY kinematics.
    This is the first part in which I will tell you why I decided to take on this project and what difficulties I faced in the initial stages.
    Write in the comments, are you interested in this project, should I continue making videos about it?

    Your search for reducing VFA is outstanding. And as many others have mentioned you have no reason to apologize about your English, it’s great as well. While I have no desire to modify an Ender3, as a retired engineer, I find this whole project immensely interesting. 🤔

      @@philipershler420 I think the VFA war has just begun. There are a few more options that I plan to try. But, to be honest, victory is still far beyond the horizon.

      @@Irbis3DJust a thought , that may well be useless, is there any possibility that the belts themselves may be resonating? Perhaps trying wider belts or adjusting belt tensions might rule this sort of scenario in or out.

    • @Irbis3D

      In some situations, these may be belts. Sometimes switching to 10mm helps. Sometimes it helps to change the number of teeth on the motor pulley. I have tried two belts so far, both Gates GT2, but different models and stiffness. Even with different tension, it does not have any effect at all. I suspect that at this stage I need to change the config to idlers with new larger bearings. I used idlers with M3 bore, and there are very small bearings. And during the experiments, I managed to damage them and now they are wobble, perhaps unevenly rotating balls cause vibrations. Therefore, the changes do not bring obvious improvements. In general, the path to a stable and convenient printer has many obstacles, but nothing is impossible))

    Yes please, more than happy to watch a series of how-to videos on converting ender 3 to core xy. There are lots of enders here going really cheap as people get rid of them. You can cure your problem with drilling aluminum parts more accurately by making 3d drill formers/drill guides for the plates (especially if you need to make more than one). I use brass tubes pressed into the 3d parts as guides for the drill bits. Turns out really accurate with simple hand tools.

    • @Irbis3D

      I used plastic guides for cutting and drilling. Without it, I would never have cut them well enough. But due to the quality of the saw and drill bits, not everything turned out perfect.

    I really like this build! Especially before linear rail conversion since it stays closer to spirit of reuse.
    The modern Voron-style belt run has an advantage, that although it needs at least two more idlers, the belt is turned inside out so all idlers but two contact the belt on the smooth side. Smooth idlers or flanged bearing pairs are more reliable and cheaper than quality toothed idlers, but running belt teeth over smooth idlers under higher tensions causes oscillation, this is why this path is preferred. Of course preferred doesn't mean that it outright solves any or all problems, just that there's fewer problem opportunities.
    I have found a HUGE difference between just random toothed idlers you might buy somewhere, and actually good deep groove machined toothed idlers. Printed toothed idlers didn't perform much better or worse than cheap toothed idlers, neither engaged the belt at the spine, neither were better than smooth idlers, and i also broke the printed idlers by belt tension rather soon. Actual good toothed idlers are glorious though.
    One can use bumpstop alignment for Z axis. Basically during homing or pre-print operation, you drive the Z motors near to the limit, then drop the motor current or motor speed and gently ram a mechanical limit. You don't need sensorless homing for that, but it's fundamentally similar, and you can use a single channel to drive both.
    I also have a feeling that extending the Z down with underslung motors and maybe little extension feet if need be would be nicer than cutting the acme screws. The metal of these rods is not pleasant to hand saw.

    • @Irbis3D
      @Irbis3D  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I've already made almost all of these changes. And in a couple of days I will post the first release version of Duender and a video about the build.
      The belt is already turned forward with teeth.
      Idlers have been replaced with F623RS flange bearings.
      I also moved the Z-axis motors inwards and downwards, although it turned out that the lead screws were still too long.

    Great stuff. I have 25 Ender-3's in a print farm, and they are highly tuned, good quality machines with a few tiny but critical modification I make as a standard package. I keep looking at maybe replacing them with modern machines, but they work well enough, just more slowly. If I can turn 2 machines into 1 twice as fast, that could be worth doing, as it will sometimes increase and sometimes decrease capacity, but it will free up space for more modern machines!

I spent December overhauling my original Ender 3, there is a lot to be said about the ease of modification of the base design and components. With only a random assortment of spares, an old pi3b+ and some printed parts to convert to direct drive/cable manage I have the machine running Klipper with direct drive far faster than ever before. I wish you much success with the english channel as i have very much enjoyed both videos, you speak clearly and the information is well presnted. Good luck!

    honestly, your english is far superior to most of the native russian speakers i've known over the years - i just wish i hadn't lost so much of the russian i learned. ender 3s are useful for a lot of projects, whether they remain printers or not. i've seen some become cnc machines, others become dedicated laser engravers, etc. i personally have an ender 3 neo that's in process of becoming an e3ng & an ender 3 v2 that's about to become a corexz running a manta e3ez with cb2 (mostly because i like the idea of keeping 1 bed slinger, whereas all my other printers are corexy). diy 3d printers are a tinkerer's dream, honestly, & i'm glad you're getting as much enjoyment & ideas out of them as i do. i'm looking forward to seeing where your dual ender project goes. 😊

      I agree 100%. Old printers are a great material for new projects. By the way, on the old channel I made a video about how to use an old board from 3d printers to create projects completely different from printers. For example, I made there a 3-axis slider for the camera from an 8-bit board from Ender-3. Maybe it makes sense to update that video at some point and release it in English.

    This is exactly what I'm looking for =), i have a heavy modifyed ender 3v2 and 7, and recently got a P1S, before i always pland to corexy my ender 3 since it allready prints super silent and quite fast, the ender 7 motion system is just to loud and it needed some modivication to have decent quality. With the p1s i had suddenly a day/night expericence, i always thought my ender 3 with all his modification is a good printer, but the ease of use if the p1s totaly opened my eyes.. BUT it is super loud. And i need at least one printer which i could run at any time of the day. An corexy ender with rigdig frame and using rollers is a perfect compromise. Very interesting project and good idea! Thank you for your efforts!
    I've already bought 2x Ender 3 and am looking forward to learning more. Could you possibly release just the current state of the project as an early beta?
    You know "release good - release early"... Sometimes it is better to wait for a perfect state and the project has the potential to build a really good community.
    Good luck!

    Your printer specs are impressive!
    10K acceleration and 300mm/s speed is pretty cool actually!
    Many printers originally designed as CoreXY solutions can not reach these specs!

    Don't worry about your English, it sounds ok. Far better than an average non-native has.
    I've made own CoreXY printer from the scratch. But it really cost much more then the same by Creality or even by Bambu. Well let it be, I comfort myself with the fact that it was just for fun and my own engineering experience)

    I'm glad you're back. Russian, English is not important (online translation decides). The main thing is that the topic of the video is interesting. I am very interested in your AMS version. The idea of such a construction hovered in my head. Good luck in the development of the new channel.

    looks better than the popular coreXY conversion that basically replaces basically every component. At that point just build a trident

    pretty good project for hobbyist with little money, many people are selling their used ender 3's so a cheap alternative for a corexy build.!
    also upcycling, re-using. avoiding e-waste and all that. :D

      I'm going to try different motors too. But, oddly enough, on my ender, the vfa was not strong when the motors were isolated from each other. but after installing them on corexy, the problem got worse. Although, I still think that this reason is not the main one.

    • @hobbyistnotes

      @@Irbis3D The difference is that CoreXY kinematics requires perfect tension between belts and equal belts length, even small length difference like one tooth will amplify the problem significantly. I know you are experienced user but just in case: I personally really love klippain-shaketune tools it shows perfectly the resonances and speeds that will affect print quality. Also TMC Autotune might help to battle artefacts as well.

    • @Irbis3D

      Belts of the same length. The tension was adjusted by sound. Thank you so much for these tools, I will definitely use them. I tried changing the TMC parameters manually, but it did not bring obvious results.
