Very informative to watch . I have my complex THR next week by spinal and I am very excited to get my independence back and be eventually pain free after 3.5 years .
@4windrush Hi , I went well , pain after and how much you depend on others is alot to cope with though . I would say first 4 weeks were the worst . My hip is just about pain free most of the time but my lower back and groin on my operated side still is not good . I have to support my operated leg still whenever I am lifting it like to get in the car or bed . I still have 1 crutch to walk with as I tend to still hobble , I Nedd to get a lot of my strength back . Good luck for your op x
Hello Dr., Luck! Thank you for this great information; In regards to hip replacement. I'm considering the Direct Anterior Approach or the Direct Superior Approach. In your opining which is better?
For me there was a lot more pain than I anticipated. My condition is called AVASCULAR Necrosis. What was supposed to be a 5 day stay in the hospital turned into a 18 day stay that included a stay in a Rehab facility. Just this past week I started outpatient PT. I'm not even allowed to drive yet. The hip doesn't feel right yet
Great stuff. I myself have just been told that my hip is `shot to bits` and that I have avascular necrosis in my left hip / ball-socket joint ( so it has to be in the pelvis or epiphysis ). Avascular necrosis means death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply ( I used to be a Nurse ). I am only 59. I have seen many people put under general anaesthesia but have never had to have a general anaesthetic myself - and the thought scares the wits out of me. I know exactly what happens pre, during and post - op. I`m not looking foreward to any of it, but it would be nice to wake up without being in agony. It`s strange, as a Nurse I never really appreciated the idea of `support groups,` but since my diagnosis I have sought out others opinions in what they experienced under the circumstances I now find myself in. Cheers, Dave. Ps, It`s late - 7 months since you wrote your post. But if you have any idea what it`s like ( what it feels like ) immediately before the thiopentone is administered I`d be grateful for the news. We both know what pain is, Lol !
If a patient is awake during an operation, x, having been given an epidural / regional ( ie, none general ) anaesthetic, will they be able to tell the Anaesthetist that they feel pain in x, if they feel pain in x ? It`s been a very long time - and I can`t remember which is which. Sux, Thiopentone, Pancuronium bro..... ! I have never had to have an anaesthetic before in my life ( apart, perhaps, from naproxen, or aspirin for toothache ), until now. Some Digger has to cut me open and replace my hip. I`d like to hear from a Gas Man that may put me at ease., because I`m shitting bricks that weigh more than Tower Bridge ! Not to dis this video - it contained excellent information for me, especially that pertaining to type of anaesthetic and recovery.
I want to be admitted to hospital half an hour before induction of anaesthesia for my total HR and be out of the bloody place the following day at the latest. I suppose I hope for too much. Everything about it scares me. I can`t remember whether or not an enema ( God help me ) is administered some time before surgery or not.... surely not a phosphate enema ? But I`m fairly certain I shall wake up with a urethral catheter in situ. I don`t want that, and I don`t want to have to sit on a commode to have a No 2 behind a curtain the other side of which twenty fellows are picking at their dinner !

How did your surgery go? I'm having mine this year and really really frightened of it all and being in more pain after surgery. Are you pain free now?
