Got quite angry watching this. Massively irresponsible regardless of your experience. Clearly not enough water, not enough food and inappropriate clothing to deal with changes in the weather. A very poor example to set.

    • @StephenJReid

Hi Jim thanks for the comment, although I have to disagree. There was no real extra risk to my person on this than on any other day. I've addressed each concern below, I might pin this comment in case anyone else is concerned. I take safety seriously and in the past have changed my route or shortened a run or hike when it felt too risky. I've done this several times on solo runs in windy, cold, wet weather with low clouds, that's the conditions that scare me the most.
Firstly I can't cover every safety aspect in every video for every person. So possibly the one thing I should have done was to say "I know my body and fitness, I'm prepared for this, doesn't mean you should try it". But I felt that it was kind of obvious that this is something I'm experienced with.
      PRE-SAFETY:
I gave my wife a printed map of my planned route. It's also a very popular hiking route with at least a few people walking most of that route per day. Forecast was checked and doubled checked including summits. I did know there was a chance of rain. I knew 90% of the route like the back of my hand.
      WATER:
This was the most well planned aspect. As made clear at the start of the video and throughout, I knew where multiple water sources would be. I had my water filter, small 300ml bottle and electrolyte tablets. Worse case scenario I would be at the most 1hr away from a water source. While I did get thirsty, the risk was minimal and I've been more dehydrated in much better conditions.
Also I knew if it did become a potential issue that I could just leave the route at multiple locations and descend to the rivers in the valleys. I don't know if you're familiar with the Mourne? But it's not a big range.
      FOOD:
Food really is irrelevant, your body has enough stores to keep going for 2 months. Having to deal with being hungry and lower energy for a day isn't going to harm me as long as I've no underlying conditions. I wouldn't recommend it for other people, but I managed this entire day on only 1000calories of food ( I didn't have breakfast either). I know my body and I know how it reacts when the energy runs out. I've been there a lot.
      CLOTHING:
I checked the weather including summit forecasts before heading out. Temp was to be max 25C, with I think 10-15C on the summits. I've been on the summits in this range at -5 in shorts and a T-shirt while running in winter (with spare warm layers of course).
So I knew that even at worse, I would just get a bit cold for a few minutes. Which is exactly what happened. I sheltered under the rock more to avoid the inconvenience of getting colder, rather than fear of it being a risk. At any case a 10min descent would have brought me down and out of the wind.
I hope this helps with concerns and thanks for being worried about my safety, I appreciate it. My mother also messaged me to say that drinking that much water could give me brain damage (it won't)
I did of course have a foil space blanket just in case I got a proper chill and needed warmth. You'll note I didn't use it as I didn't get cold enough to need it.

I don't see why a simple youtube video should make you "quite angry". Not worth it, breathe and let be. Anger is also a poor example to set.

Well done, great attitude, always a good idea to take 5 or 10 minutes to reevaluate the situation when things go against you, you looked in control of that situation and you obviously know the mournes well and had a back up plan just to get out whenever you needed, I know it was still probably 2 or 3 hours to your car but anyone can find the strength to do that when we really need to, people underestimate themselves. You can learn alot about yourself up a mountain. Thanks for showing how things really are out there and not editing the video to just show peaks and sunsets👊👊 I was in the mournes twice in the last 6 weeks and its amazing up there, absolutely stunning, it's awesome it takes my breath away every time, I love the place

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you! yeah I definitely wouldn't recommend doing something like this to someone who doesn't know the area or who isn't experienced being up there. But I had several self-escape options if I needed them. Glad you enjoyed the video and yeah, love being in the mountains.
