      Yeah, it took quite a bit of getting used to it. Think it took me about 3hikes out with it before I felt comfortable using it. Although I've found that with other cameras too when I first get them.

    Can’t get over how good that lowlight/dark footage looked, so crisp! 😲 I believe that a camera with a little man inside isn’t actually a camera, it’s an iconograph. Who knew that paintings could look so realistic 😏

    Hey Stephen ive never done the mournes before and since moving to Scotland last year ive regretted not doing the mournes whilst i lived back home. Im hopefully back in June this year and really would love to do the 7 peaks ... any tips or advice on how best to plan? Or even tips of what mountains to do first if i dont do the 7 peaks in one go. Thanks in advance for any advice 🙂

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm I haven't actually done the official 7 peaks in one go, but best advice for training is probably to try and climb two weeks every weekend for a few weeks. Or maybe you are already quite comfortable in the mountains?
      Definitely plan a route ahead of time and possibly do two recce days where you do half the route each day. That way there's no surprises.
      Theres a facebook group called Mourne Mountain Adventures which has lots of people who have done 7 peaks and great source of tips and strategies etc.

  • @KCadbyRacing
    @KCadbyRacing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video 👍
    I like the night time footage better than a lot of the footage taken before sunset and after sunrise because IMO there's a lack of color and detail in everyone's faces/skin (doesn't look realistic).
    Hmmm, I just watched the beginning again (several times) where you switched from raw to graded and for the first time ever I have to say I don't like some of the things your grading did, IE detail and color on your forehead/hand/skin disappears (again doesn't look realistic to me), but the tree and your shirt look awesome when it switches 👍😁 The Sunset was Super AWESOME!!!
    Another comparison for what I'm talking about is I like the color better at the end (even though it isn't accurate and resolution obviously isn't as good) when you switch from ZV1 to GoPro 15:50 vs 14:04 With that said🤓 I'm thinking/expecting the results will be much better once you get to know the camera (and try some manual settings?).
    It also looks like you got to see how the ZV1 changes exposure too much sometimes? I watched another review where the exposure went from great to way over exposed when a lady that was wearing black jeans walked by they're ZV1 (camera on gorilla pod/ground)...

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Kevin and good observations. I wasn’t entirely happy with my colour grade on this but the alternative was to delay publishing for 24hours as I’d miss the window for that day to adjust it.
      What isn’t obvious is just how well this camera performs in low light around sunset as the exposure was much brighter than the actually was and giving clean footage at quite high ISO’s.
      The auto exposure is actually the best I’ve seen in a small camera as it prioritises faces but yeah sometimes it seemed to struggle in really contrasty lighting.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason the GoPro footage looks so different is partly because it was nearly 20mins after the last Sony shot and the light out side had changed from dull blue to much brighter and warmer.

      It depends on your regional settings. 50fps & 100fps are PAL European/UK framerates, while 60fps & 120fps are NTSC International/US. You should be able to change the region in the settings to change the region. I haven’t done it yet myself but should be easy to find.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different cameras for different things so hard to compare. One is a 360 camera and the other is an ultra compact camera. 360 is great for adding interesting angles and views, but I personally wouldn't use it as a primary vlogging camera.

    • @RS.Outdoors

      @@StephenJReid Thanks for getting back to me. Meant the 1" sensor mod on the 360.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh right. Ok so the 1 inch sensor mod has two advantages. 1. It's Waterproof and rugged. 2. It's slightly smaller.
      Other than that, the ZV1 is better in every way. Although if you really need a tiny camera that will work in low light and is waterproof, the 1 inch mod is the only option.
      Now that I've used it a lot more, I see the 1 Inch mod as being quite specialised. Of course it does have the advantage that it's cheaper if you buy it as part of the One R system, but personally I think that's a distraction.

      I love the ZV1 but it does have a few limitations that some won’t like. It’s the best camera of that size & price that currently exists though. Do you mean the Panasonic G100? I was considering it but it’s too big for what I wanted.
      My main TH-cam camera is a GH5 with a 10-25 f1.7. It’s a brilliant setup but big and bulky and I wanted something for the days when I didn’t want to carry much with me.

    • @mikeaigarsproductions8991
      @mikeaigarsproductions8991 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StephenJReid I see from reviews that the g100 lacks in all categeroies compared to zv 1, so that is not an option , even the stabilisation is useless...gh5 is a magical camera due to the ibis, I have a canon m50 with 22mm efm prime and a dji ronin sc gimbal...but that is the problem..first of all lack of 4k for use as main camera,2nd. The setup with gimbal is too big and "attention drawing" to feel comfortable to vlog with. To be honest, the footage is not super great from the ZV-1. I guess you didn’t need the ND filter? Dynamic range seems quite limited, and contrast wasn’t that great either. Dawn/sunrise light shows really flat looking skin with no contrast. It’s going to be better than smart phone and GoPro, but you might get better quality from Micro 4/3 or APS-C.

    • @StephenJReid

      It's the colour grade I used. In hindsight I messed up the grade a bit, the original footage has a lot more DR. Quality is easily as good as from my GH5.

    Fantastic journey and video Stephen.. thanks for sharing! Are you able to share how many batteries you used during the entire trip on the ZV-1?

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Daryl, I used about 1.5 batteries over the 11 hours. Although I was quite efficient with my filming.

    • @PlanetDaryl
      @PlanetDaryl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StephenJReid whoa.. that is much lesser than I would have guessed. I thought you went thru at the very least 4 batteries.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I was pleasantly surprised. Although I was quite efficient and only shot 55mins of footage total over 11hours. That was then edited down into the 15min video. If you have good camera “trigger discipline” you can get your batteries to cover longer events.

      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it was right up to 12800 in some of the darkest shots. It’s impressively usable at high isos

      @@StephenJReid Thanks! Was carrying the selfie stick a hassle? I'm considering purchasing the camera but will need to carry a stick due to the lack of a wide angle.

      Actually find the handle makes it easier to use and carry as I hang it from a carabiner on my backpack. I use this stick: th-cam.com/video/mmnwlXUz-1Q/w-d-xo.html

    Would love to know what you think of the zv1 vs the hero 8! I'm completely torn between the two in terms of portability, battery life and flexibility or using/needing gimbals! 😊

    • @sang3Eta
      @sang3Eta 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like the 1" sensor and f1.7 on the Sony ZV1 but if it had rained it would have been destroyed. A Sony RX0ii offeres a 1" sensor and waterproofing.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oooo that's a tricky question. In general the ZV1 is a much better camera in terms of producing high. quality visuals. But it isn't waterproof at all or rugged so it's not an action camera in any way. It's really going to depend on what kind of content you plan on making?

    • @SonnyJacobLee
      @SonnyJacobLee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh thanks everyone! I'm already somewhat decided on getting the Zv1 but I was also just amazed at the footage and quality of your Hero 8 videos! So I sort of had 2nd thoughts. Also I'm doubting the battery life a little bit too. But I'll also check some videos on the RX0ii!

    • @sang3Eta

      The battery in the Sony ZV1 and X3000 are the same. The X3000 is Sonys version of a GoPro. Means a spare battery would work in either depending on weather.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Battery life in the ZV1 is actually very similar to the GoPro. It’s a different style of footage and filming with the two camera. The GoPro is about big wide shots, motion and fast movements. The ZV1 is more cinematic. You can see the difference if you compare this video with one shot on the GoPro.
