While watching this video I was shooked and bowed my head in shame. As an African who is exposed I bow my head in shame but there are two ways to this. One is that I can't blame Africans because growing up in Africa I never knew what blackface was till I left. The common man in the streets of his own country in the continent of Africa does not know what blackface is. We aren't even thought blackface or slavery at school so there's no way for us to know anything. It is now the duty and responsibility as exposed Africans to educate our fellow Africans who aren't exposed to such terms to see the wrong in it and why we should not get involved when things like this come up. Yes we get angry but our fellow brothers and sisters in Africa who don't know what blackface is will not be upset because they are blinded by that term. Even if they decide to leave they will be blinded till they are taught or get curious. Them being on a Chinese TV show, they saw it as an opportunity to make the connection between the two countries stronger and those involved are happy. They will never understand the implications and outcry if we don't teach them and usually this type of thing ends with an outcry and boycott but no proper education to one or both sides. Same ideology goes to the Chinese side but there's nothing new on this side and not all Chinese people will agree with the video of how Africa was portrayed. The board of directors and all those involved are to be blamed because they don't see Africans as humans and they can only think of Africa as going to a zoo and seeing huts instead of houses. The Chinese person who was masked as blackface probably thought it was exciting to play the role (sad stuff). I will continue to blame American media whenever issues like this arise because they feed us with these things and they don't portray Africa in a good way. They don't even portray any person of colour or minority in a good way. It's what we consume that shapes our ideology and until we are ready to spread and grow our ideology will remain the same.
I am from China and I have to admit that this show is quite misleading due to its improper description of Africa which accords with the prevailing idea in China that most people in Africa live savagely in chaos, gun fire and severe poverty. It is the lack of mutual-understanding that results in the remarkable lack of basic knowledge of Africa, which accounts for the reason why a large number of people in China still think Africa is a country (the percentage is definitely not that high though). And this show is quite a shame because even if it means no harm to people of color, it is obviously very controversial and may hurt feelings of African people. In China, we may not pay that much attention to PC but this show is way off the line. we know this is kinda racist .we just cannot talk about this online. what 's worse, the fact that it is on this stage means that the message it carries represents the thoughts of high level officials in the party. that's scary. just think that people who run this country still hold that kind of biased thoughts(Africa is poor so that China can look down upon them). they never admit that in public, but they always think like that .

Not to defend the show or anything but this gala show is based on skits and performances. They are focused on hiring capable actors for each role, pretty sure this wasn't done for discriminatory reasons otherwise it would render this China Africa relations skit pointless.

Knowing that blackface is a US American thing and many people in other countries don't even know about it and mean no harm, what pissed me off most about this is how in this show the Chinese as a people and nation are idolized. This does not show a lateral friendship of two equals. I remember being in China myself when this show aired and being so angry I wanted to yell at people! I feel sorry that African friends take it as sort of offensive and most Chinese would not even realize it. I think the intention of that is to show/boost the tie and friendship between Africa and China but the result does not turn out to be as expected and quite ignorant. PS. at the same time I feel Africans and Chinese do share some identical mindset which is easily getting offensive , even some minor things can make them interpret it into insulting China or insulting Africa, it might apply to most non-white non-western countries due to the scars of invasions and colonization in the old days ( I can totally relate the giraffe part though as some Chinese of other provinces think all Inner Mongolian Chinese ride horses and camels to schools and offices and the latter ones are not happy about it. They chose a song steadily repeating “This is Africa.” Branding the wild as the true state of Africa as a whole. One problem is the majority of the 800 million viewers saw the CNY Gala show but more than likely haven't seen the many online videos speaking on the issue with it.
This is a great and educational video. I am not African, I am from Euro-descent but we must educate ourselves on these issues through learning and respect other peoples and cultures. We have no excuse to be ignorant when we have the chance to learn. Respect you immensely.

Personally I don’t think the director of the whole act wanted to cause any harm or echo sentiments of racism but he/she should have done thorough research before directing the skit. On the other hand our African brothers and sisters who were actors there should have spoken up about how other Africans would perceive the show and how it send out a wrong message about Africa well in this case Kenya or let alone not partake in it (Or maybe they saw no wrong in such an act). While watching this video I was shooked and bowed my head in shame. As an African who is exposed I bow my head in shame but there are two ways to this. One is that I can't blame Africans because growing up in Africa I never knew what blackface was till I left. The common man in the streets of his own country in the continent of Africa does not know what blackface is. We aren't even thought blackface or slavery at school so there's no way for us to know anything. It is now the duty and responsibility as exposed Africans to educate our fellow Africans who aren't exposed to such terms to see the wrong in it and why we should not get involved when things like this come up. Yes we get angry but our fellow brothers and sisters in Africa who don't know what blackface is will not be upset because they are blinded by that term. Even if they decide to leave they will be blinded till they are taught or get curious. Them being on a Chinese TV show, they saw it as an opportunity to make the connection between the two countries stronger and those involved are happy. They will never understand the implications and outcry if we don't teach them and usually this type of thing ends with an outcry and boycott but no proper education to one or both sides. Same ideology goes to the Chinese side but there's nothing new on this side and not all Chinese people will agree with the video of how Africa was portrayed. The board of directors and all those involved are to be blamed because they don't see Africans as humans and they can only think of Africa as going to a zoo and seeing huts instead of houses. The Chinese person who was masked as blackface probably thought it was exciting to play the role (sad stuff). I will continue to blame American media whenever issues like this arise because they feed us with these things and they don't portray Africa in a good way. They don't even portray any person of colour or minority in a good way. It's what we consume that shapes our ideology and until we are ready to spread and grow our ideology will remain the same.

Not to defend the show or anything but this gala show is based on skits and performances. They are focused on hiring capable actors for each role, pretty sure this wasn't done for discriminatory reasons otherwise it would render this China Africa relations skit pointless.
Black people get offended about everything. We can't expect other people to take us seriously if we are not developing or promoting ourselves. The show was done to promote safari tours in Kenya to Chinese travelers.

I feel sorry that African friends take it as sort of offensive and most Chinese would not even realize it. I think the intention of that is to show/boost the tie and friendship between Africa and China but the result does not turn out to be as expected and quite ignorant. PS. at the same time I feel Africans and Chinese do share some identical mindset which is easily getting offensive , even some minor things can make them interpret it into insulting China or insulting Africa, it might apply to most non-white non-western countries due to the scars of invasions and colonization in the old days

From the perspective of a Chinese who study in the US, I want to say the story is based on what is happening in China and the story contains stereotypes of Africa in general (actually countries vary a lot in Africa). So it is ignorance instead of racism.

Personally I don’t think the director of the whole act wanted to cause any harm or echo sentiments of racism but he/she should have done thorough research before directing the skit.
On the other hand our African brothers and sisters who were actors there should have spoken up about how other Africans would perceive the show and how it send out a wrong message about Africa well in this case Kenya or let alone not partake in it (Or maybe they saw no wrong in such an act).

Good Job WodeMaya. This is your best video so far, no doubt. I love the message you are trying to spread, and also love the fact that you were able to put subtitles to the original video (accurate ones) because even though the images are offensive, the script is even worst. It perpetuates this idea of “The wonderful China-land”, power country which has become the “savior” of “the Dump-land of Africa” (or so they like to think) when in reality they are just building all these railways, roads and buildings primarily for their own benefit -but thats an other topic.
I believe that showing indignation or rage in English on social medias wont change a thing tho. We need people to get to them using their own language, I think that could make a bigger difference.
So to all my East African and other African brothers and sisters in China, just like Maya said, it is time that “we respect ourselves”, that we show the best side of ourselves in a country that thinks we are doomed, that we truly start studying Chinese if we really want them to change their mentality because China can be a great partner for some African countries, it just has to be on OUR OWN TERMS, not on theirs. By learning the language and the culture you will get to understand better what kind of people you are dealing with and will be able to truly deal with them.
Saying :”China in Africa is modern colonialism, all these Chinese should leave our countries immediately!”, isn’t a solution; dealing with them ON OUR OWN TERMS is !!!
For instance, getting THEM (the chinese workers) to learn the local language of the country they reside in instead of the opposite (that makes more sense to me); making sure that there is an exchange of technology so that we dont depend on them for future maintenance and then also be able to build such things ourselves in the future; etc.
