I began my martial arts instruction in 1968. Goshinjutsu was drilled into us kids. It is second nature to me. I've used the wrist lock escape from a bear hug dozens of times in my life, it works!
I started judo in 1964. We were instructed in the self defense side of judo and it was great stuff, very practical. Nowadays, tho, I can hardly get guys to practice it. They're all oriented toward sport judo. Frustrating.
@@haffoc I was a starry eyed kid hanging around dojo's here in Boston in 1964. I couldn't take lessons until 1968. And you're right, the self-defense side of Judo was emphasized. Great stuff. I think that was because of all the veterans (mostly Marines) who taught Hakko-ryu jiu-jitsu, Uechi-ryu karate, and Kodokan Judo in self-defense clubs. Remember Bruce Tegner? One of my 'sensei's was a student of Bruce Tegner and taught Kodokwan jiu-jitsu to us. All my 'senseis' were taught in either Japan or Okinawa. So we had Old School training: washed our gi's from buckets; no water to drink, and windows opened all winter (we had to sweep the snow off the tatamis before practice). I think the Olympics and the IJF have down-graded Judo. Thanks for your feedback!!
Just the entry into it really. Shihonage and Waki Gatame are wicked, so if you can get your grip on the guy and not get shot in the process then I have no problem with what he was showing. Shit even if you do get shot it's not a death sentence. Might kill you, might not.

The pistol defense is ludicrous
Ikr. But hey if it doesn't suit adapt it then. Anyways we gotta walk before learning to run.
