I have been gardening, quilting, soaping and canning for most of my life. I believe there might be some value to documenting some of the skills I have learned over the years. I appreciate you joining me on this journey. We can all learn something from each other, and I hope to gain some insight from other peoples experiences as well. Whenever I start to find myself wondering why I’m ‘putting away’ etc.. I remember what they did to us in the last 4 years. I remember not being able to enter a hospital to see a loved one, or enter certain grocery stores and restaurants. And being gaslight, lied to and abused by our PM, by family. Then I smile, and trust my guts. Fool me once, not twice. Great video Toni, Happy Mother’s Day! 💝
Thank You! and happy Mother's Day to you too!
We prep because we are guaranteed nothing. Storms, bugs, disease can attack at any time not to mention the two legged predators.
Wise choice of words, Toni. We’re hearing in the U.S. we need two years worth of food and commodities. Last night in the NC Smokies we saw the Northern Lights. Bright fuschia and green lights that seemed to lift my potato plants another few inches and straight up.
seeing the northern lights must have been beautiful...I haven't seen them yet!
My husband and I had personal loans and cc debts. We used that money to invest in fixing up our home. We were able to do a home equity refinance at the same 3.5% keeping the payoff for the same time(15 years). We paid off all the loans and cc cards and used my SSI cks to pay off my car 3 yrs early. Our house payment only went up $107.00 monthly. We're working on paying off the house now. Its a great feeling!
perfect!
Hello Toni,
Another great video and excellent advice! I want to wish you a very happy mother's day! God bless you and your family!
Thank You! and happy Mother's Day to you too!
They work so hard to divide people we must do the opposite and hang on and help each other more now then ever! check on your neighbors elderlies, grow more to help others, not everyone can garden but we can start a creative exchange. ex: my grand parents exchanged veggies to a neighbor that did oil change. One painted their porch for hand made snow shoes. we can all be creative by exchanging and helping one another.
Awesome, That's the way...they have divided us for too long!
Tony I really like listening to you with your calmness and wisdom. I wish you were my neighbor! AND your dimples are adorable.
hehe...Thank You so Much!
I have had no issues with eating home canned food that is up to fourteen years old, you just need to store it in areas with stable cool temperatures and protect the jars from light. I did another thirty five pints of meat yesterday, I am out of room for quarts, but still have some smaller spaces that will hold pints. I do get jars that fail when they get old, but the percentage is small.
Those who don't follow the advice you were giving today about debt and food storage will come to regret it.
an additional 35 pints of meat is awesome, and the ones that fail are the next day's dinner....no loss there!
@@HerHomesteadSkills The important thing to remember about keeping out of debt and having spare resources is it doesn't take an end of the world event or an economic collapse to need such things. Negative events, financial or medical, can be very personal and not living on the edge can be a life saver.
Good vlog. Thanks. My Darling DIL gifted me with several gallons of small green, blow-down peaches. I'm in TX and the weather has been' unsettled'. I've make sauces--using different spices, additional fruits, vegs, etc., to use to jazz up bean and rice meals. I'm dehydrating the sauces as I make them--shelf stable, you know. 😉I'm still canning meat whenever I can afford to. Still making fast beans. Still preparing...and eating what I've already prepared! After all, that is what I'm doing this for, my families sustenance and health.
PS: still want a freeze dryer...maybe my kids will get together and buy me one??? Would cost a lot less to ship them goodies...just sayin" Also, the soluble vitamins in canned food to migrate to the the liquid until they are equalized--over time. So, the moral is, use the liquid as well as the solid food. Soup and stew are wonderful four letter words!!
would be a very nice mother's day gift for sure, and one that will pay forward!
We here in this country USA we have ingredients in our food that is banned in other countries!
yeah definitely to much stuff added to foods, to make it look appetizing, to make it taste good, and to make it last longer.
I met a woman here in my state in SC that lives in Canada and visiting and she was talking about your Canadian president sounds as bad as Biden but haven’t they all had their downfalls for decades? Yes prep pray and stay peaceful 🙏
Mark would say that our PM is much worse than JB
Very wise lady. Yes it is going to get intense and it is a divide and conquer tactic, so don't be divided.
agreed!
In my younger years, I learned how to cook, bake, can, dehydrate, grow a garden. There were many mistakes, but kept at it. "How-to" books & talking to folks was & still is a big help. Now I'm teaching my kids & grandkids how to can, bake, dehydrate and garden.
Great, I was lucky enough to learn by example too.
I have been pressure canning proteins and meals in a jar like chicken soup and chili from October 2023 through April 2024 when I find sales. New to pressure canning and appreciate TH-cam for instructional videos! Retired December 2023 and started two raised garden beds in April 2024 here in NorCal. Looking forward to bartering my Japanese quail eggs for things I cannot grow and providing chicks for the community in hopes that every household that eats eggs will have a rabbit hutch with 12-24 quail hens for eggs!
Awesome! You're doing great!
Honestly, when people are hungry, nutrition won’t be the first concern. 😞
very true!
Thank you dear Toni -- wise and encouraging words ... what is really important, and not so important. Thank you for your kindness and thoughtfulness. People like you are making a difference!
It's going to be difficult time, I do not know whether I will survive it myself here in South Africa, but I will do my best and trust in God for the rest. I need to be close to Him, safe under His wings. My dearest wish is to be in right standing with Him when I die, so that I can be safe with Him forever.
Remembering the way my father died is inspiring and reassuring to me. He died at 92 of sepsis due to a perforated colon. In the end his lungs filled up with fluid, but he was safe with God and very calm and peaceful. He even smiled at me at one point, and seemed very content, even comfortable. Only a few minutes before he breathed his last, the process of dying was more effortful, yet he still seemed peaceful. It was both a "hard" way to die, and a good way. I believe God's love and power (and my father's inner knowing that he was safely on his way to the kingdom of heaven) made all the difference.
He'd had a difficult life, and he wasn't ready to die until right at the end, when he realized that something was seriously wrong (he had intense pain at the site of the infection). Some time before that, I'd prayed that God would grant him an easy death (that he would die in his sleep with minimal suffering), but I'm glad that God didn't answer that prayer, because it turned out that he hadn't been ready for that kind of death.
It was only when he was admitted to hospital the final time, that he paid the necessary attention to the matter of being in right standing with God. I believe that all the family Scripture readings and prayers did make a difference in preparing him, but I saw that he was afraid and realized that he wasn't ready to die. So I told him that unlike some other people who died suddenly, he was now in the privileged position of being able to make sure that he would go to heaven.
I again outlined the necessary steps: realizing that I am a sinner and in need of God's forgiveness. Repenting of my sins and being thankful and reverent towards God (the God of the Bible, of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob -- the only true God). Being humble (realizing that I cannot deserve to go to heaven, but that being able to go to heaven is only thanks to the grace of God [Ephesians 2] -- thanks to what Jesus did for me on the Cross). Realizing that I cannot think that I'm any better than any other human being in myself or from out of myself (anything good is only thanks to circumstances that God made possible), and being forgiving and well-meaning towards others (no bitterness or unforgiveness, letting go of any anger). And enduring in that attitude/mindset until my last breath.
I'd hardly finished talking when he bowed his head to pray, where he lay in his hospital bed. I saw a clearly discernable change come over his whole being -- he was filled with peace.
So what happened to my father -- which was wonderful, it was wonderful that it had turned out that way -- is something that helps me. Even though I know that I'm a vulnerable human being, not someone who delights in the idea of "being tough" (although looking after one's health is sensible). I will just have to hold onto God and trust in Him to help me ride the rapids.
Wishing you and your loved ones all the best dear Toni. God bless and keep you.
Thank You, Yes you've got this...God calls us home on his terms.
I put in 2 more tomatoes (11) so far- majority grown from seed inside, 6 kale plants, 6 jalapeños, 6 Hungarian wax peppers, 4 green and orange peppers, more herbs. Never ends!
right It does not..:-)
Really enjoy watching and listening. Wisdom, care & love-be there for others. Lovely stuff.
Thank You!
Great advice on the credit cards. They are easy to use but hard to pay off. Thanks.

Thank you Toni for another wonderful video. Happy mother's Day to you and allof your subscribers 😊
Thank you! and Happy Mother's day to you too!
Yes you got it Toni food and shelter is so important . Great video ❤
Thank You!
Hi Toni, happy GMS!🎉 Thank you for doing this channel, you have been a complete inspiration and a healthy measure of reality!💗
Thank You!
Planted okra seeds today, plus basil and oregano seedlings. Scattered parsley and toothache plant seeds since there was room in the herb beds. Husband bought me gorgeous foxglove and columbine plants for our hummingbird and bee garden. He's going to smoke pork ribs and tenderloin tomorrow for Mother's Day. Staying busy and working in the garden muffles the divisive drama all around us. Husband and I were very frugal for years so we could eliminate all debt before we retired. Yes, the next months and possibly a few years are going to be challenging. We'll do the best we can and filter out all the "noise" we can't control. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and wisdom 🙂
That sounds like a perfect day! enjoy!

Growing even a small garden eating fresh and preserving to last until the next harvest will help to save a little money. I grew up poor on a farm and not buying much from the store most of our food was raised on the farm and we canned veggies fruit and berries, we bought flour, cornmeal and dry beans in bulk each fall to start off the fall with full pantries. I have always liked to have a well-stocked pantry even living in the city so if money is short or during winter there is always food to put on the table even if you can't get to the store I guess it was how I grew up. Living the city I still have a small garden.
agreed, I only have a small garden too, but will top it up with fresh farm grown produce when it is plentiful in the fall.
Hi Toni,
I agree with you 💯. This is my fourth year gardening. I totally enjoy it. We’re doing a bigger garden this year. My tomatoes actually sprouted little flowers yesterday. I’m planting carrots this year & hopefully they grow. But, yes I see what’s happening. We’re very blessed right now & happy I have a garden. We also purchased a chicken coop a few years ago & we have fresh eggs every day. I did stock up on cans of freeze dried eggs for the winter when they don’t lay as much.
My daughter & I talked yesterday about the Harvest Right. I believe we’re going to get one & get busy freeze drying our own food. I’m learning from you & I truly appreciate your videos. I planted a lot of strawberries because we like them too! I’ll definitely be freeze drying those.
You’re very calming & I enjoy your videos. The baking, freeze drying & price comparisons. I pray for everyone because what’s going on (I feel) is global. We’re all in this together. Wishing you a very wonderful & blessed, Happy Mother’s Day! 🌺💕🌸🪴🪻🌷
Thank You, If you are buying freeze dried eggs already...you can certainly make your own...so much you can do
I've had freezer dried ice cream and that is an amazing treat to have done in small scoops like meatball size.....also freezing dried ice cream bars in bits size pieces. So many things you can do with freeze drying. 😊
I can just imagine all the things one can do!
You are wise!
Thank You!
Sage and wise advice and observations Tony! My New Years theme for 2024 was placed on my heart by G-d. The Word He gave me? .... PREPARE. By His blessing, I have my freeze dryer on order and am stockpiling what I can. Most of my coworkers think I am being extreme. So be it. Thank you for your freeze drying tips, your gardening stories and you great insight. Happy Mother's Day!!
there may come a time that your coworkers recognize how astute you actually are....I agree, ignore them.
Wow, 200 lbs of potatoes! That's wonderful. For my dehydrated potatoes, I found it takes 2+ days soaking for the water to get to the center. ...... On freeze dried, you may be interested in cooking some and mashing them before freeze drying, then powder for instant potatoes.
i'm thinking powdering my dehydrated ones.
Hi Toni - some very sage advice. I’m working in the greenhouses today and tomorrow - up potting 600 tomato plants. Then I’ve got pepper plants to do as well - about 500. Trying to get the husband to prepare some garden spaces so I don’t have to up pot 400 cabbages as I should be able to get those planted this coming week in the outside garden. Also have celery that can get planted out into the big greenhouse and onion starts. By the 15-20th should be able to get the peppers, eggplants and cherry tomatoes into big greenhouse and get 400 lbs of potatoes planted in various outdoor garden areas as well as peas. Also have greens that need planting soon - spinach, Swiss chard, kale. So much to do that I can’t even think of freeze drying anything at the moment. The rest of the seeds and plants will go in last week of May or first week of June - gotta watch the weather for last frost which is normally June 3. Wishing you a happy Mother’s Day- hope you have an excellent one.
WOW! I'm impressed!
Harriet, You are a wonder! and I am enjoying the freeze dryer too!
Happy Mother's day 🌟

Good advice! Hello from Arkansas. The flowering season, perennials only. Got a notice from one DEBTOR that they were moving to, what was it? .. 34-36%.. not only will i not use that store ever again, knocking that one i wasnt worried about out fast. Now its time for $900 utility bills. Keep hammering, whatching debt get smaller feels so good.
I've paid off two myself the last 3 months. One was just 5 days ago which I "thought" I still had 17 payments(personal loan for replacement of water heater, duct cleaning etc) Imagine my surprise when I called "just because I had a question about the balance: $600!! It was correct. All I owed was that amount because for a while I was 3 to 4 months ahead of the due date and I always sent more than the minimum. Imagine my happiness when I asked the lady: "600?? Thats IT?? You SURE?? I wanna pay it off NOW please and thankyou!!"
when you stop paying the interest, it will be awesome...almost like found money!

Hi Tonie from SC
Hello Shirley!
Miss T according to Justine Trudeau every thing is just fine. Same here with big Joe who claims most people are doing just fine. . I wish you the best of luck.
It has been just fine for them, sadly they didn't ensure that it was equally "just fine" for those they claim to govern...
@@HerHomesteadSkills Hopefully you can replace Justine with someone better. When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's Canada was much different.
I've freeze dried homemade chili, it was awesome! I really should do a triple batch of it next time.
hmmm, I must try that!
Do you use beans in your chili? If so, did you have any issues with them getting completely dried? I've wanted to try chili, but wasn't sure if I should omit the beans or not.
@@clumsycan Yes I use beans, I never had an issue with them not drying completely. I do add extra time though.
You mentioned tomato puree. I found a good tomato soup recipe, cooked it, freeze dried it, powdered it and sealed in mylar bags, keeping one jar on the counter for winter cup-o-soup. I also freeze dry tomato puree, then powder it for sprinkling on pizza for extra flavor, on salads, quick tomato paste, etc. ... Tomato chunks are great freeze dried too. Things like this, I keep a pint jar in the kitchen for quick use.
That is awesome!
Happy mother's day

Hi Toni from down under. Happy Mothers Day.
Thank You! and happy Mother's Day to you too!
Thank You Tony for the video.
You are very welcome
The whole world is in chaos, so yeah for the next few years (because no matter what it will take at least that long) there will be uncertainties. You and I remember the 70s, that last time everything was in chaos. Politics, religion, other countries conflicts, economic downturn...it took more than a decade for things to settle into a type of normalcy.
@@leavingayeye5198not at all. All the same players are involved. Economy- January 1971 Davos Switzerland, the meeting if the first World Economic Forum. There they introduced the concept of global redesign using the "Great Reset". There was high unemployment, consumer shortages, runaway inflation. Religion- the Vatican2, witchcraft was part of popular culture like today, and the push for sexual immorality and debauchery was just as strong as today. RoevsWade and AIDS happened. Conflicts- are too many to list. There were more than 110 armed conflicts/wars (some lasting years) in the 1970s alone. Political- also too many protest and too much corruption too possibly list here. Watergate caused the resignation of the United States President. So no, today its not a different scenario. Its exactly the same scenario, the exact same players, and the exact same goals on mind. The only difference? With the internet, information is harder to control and the agendas are harder to keep secret.
I like those glasses 👓
Thank you!
Amen
Thought about freeze drying that tomato puree? I been using tomato powder to make tomato paste. No waste if you only need a couple of Tbsps for a dish.
nope, but I have considered powdering the grape tomatoes I freeze dried and making soup with that!
Tony, Trail Grazers- Rose does some freze dried videos also, making thing for camping trips... Saw one today-potato salad !!?!
Thanks, yes, I have seen a few of her videos!

I have heard about the candy being freeze dried, I don't eat candy, too sweet for me. I would have the fresh fruit. Or maybe freeze dried.
I love candy, but it's not a good idea for me to eat any of it...trying to stay away from sugar right now!
Are you using a freeze dryer (expensive) or a Dehydrator? I can’t afford a freeze dryer so I’m going to use the Dehydrator on my garden produce.
In the past I have always used a dehydrator, now I can use both!
HELLO GTSY
Hello Maria!
My sister and I canned up 50 lb I thought that was a lot
A lot also depends on how much you use!
Freeze dryer question- now that you have one, would you say it is a worthwhile investment?
My two cents' worth after we bought a freeze dryer 3 years ago - it depends on your outlook and how many people you're going to feed. We dehydrated food for years; the problem is it stays good for maybe two years. Freeze dried food stays good for 10-25 years stored properly. We also canned a lot, and still do for meats, tomato products like salsa, tomato juice, tomatoes, and cocktail sauce. But canned goods are *heavy*. Freeze dried are very, very lightweight! We do the same as Toni - put back entire freeze dried meals. And freeze dried fruits are especially good! If you bought ready-made freeze dried meals, a year's supply can be as much as $3000 for a family of 4, and it's survival minimum calories. If you're wanting to put back 2-3 or more years of food, a freeze drier is definitely a good investment. Other advantages: you can freeze dry pasta meals (which can't be safely canned or dehydrated), raw eggs, milk, and veggies like broccoli, asparagus, spinach, cucumbers, and radishes. Cucumber slices sprinkled with Ranch seasoning are awesome! As are apple slices sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. One of my favorite things to freeze dry is mirepoix. You can't freeze dry butter or fatty food like corned beef or bacon, so there are "cons". A freeze dryer takes up room, puts out heat, and is somewhat noisy - and it uses electricity. We haven't seen a big jump in our electric bills but we freeze everything before - another "con" is having space in your freezer for 4-5 long trays of product. We saved for three years and sold some items so we could buy the (medium) freeze dryer. I've never regretted it.
gsdalpha1358 gave you a good response..and I will add that it is a tool, and it's as worthwhile as the individual who uses that tool...some will really take advantage of everything that it can do, for others it may be a source of income, by selling what they make with it, I will use it to preserve the foods that I believe are best preserved using this method.
Toni, what kind of equipment do you have to freeze dry fruits?
I have a Medium Harvest Right Freeze Dryer..affiliates.harvestright.com/2861.html
Question can can seal instead potato?
sorry, I don't understand the question!
What does it cost in electricity to freeze dry 200 lbs of potatoes?
don't know, I "dehydrated" 200 lbs of potatoes, haven't freeze dried that quantity yet.
@@HerHomesteadSkills From what could find out Canada has one of the cheapest Electric per kilowatt hour costs. So I guess you have little to worry about.
Can dehydrated potatoes be turned into powder for mashed potatoes?
You can actually make the mashed potatoes and then freeze dry them
@@Diana-gg2xy
Dehydrated and freeze drying are totally different besides the cost. One costs a couple hundred dollars and the other costs several thousand.
@@catalhuyuk7 Less than $3000 to around $4500, iirc.
I'm planing on trying just that!
