Nice review. As you have pointed out, it's an interesting combo of old and new features vs. other similar pistols. Having more options in a BHP design is always a good thing. 👍👍

I would like to have one but for the money it's hard to justify buying a pistol at that price point that isn't optics cut. Having said that, I really would like to add a BHP to the collection. Thanks for showing it off!

Nice review! I bought one for my birthday. The one thing that gets me is that you and I and a few other TH-camrs have videos on the new High Power. I don't know how sales are for this firearm. It's sort of a niche firearm. I like the way this shoots compared to the SA-35. It's accurate. I'll just put a brighten front sight on mine.

They should have done all that work to the Hi-Power DA 9mm. It was a waste and Irrevelant on the regular HP-35. The New Take down lever was Unnecessary and a Fatal Flaw in any pistol design as it gives a up close assailant and opportunity to disable Your Pistol by Disassembling it.

I’ve always wanted one of the original High Power but never got around to it because of the price. This updated version, however, has most of the improvements my buddy and I always wanted have been incorporated in the design, boxes checked! I think I’d like one of the matte black ones instead of the tactical colored ones. I’m sure one of these will find a way into my gun safe at some point!
    Great review, thanks for sharing!

I like this gun. I was prepared to like it from it's announcement. But FN hasn't done a lot to promote it; and they haven't done a good job of getting the gun to distributors. For the price, this gun should have come with (3) magazines. I also think that a white dot front sight should be the default option; not a blacked out front sight. I have an SA-35. It is a handsome gun. The SA-35 enjoys aftermarket support, via it's compatibility with the original. Apex Tactical makes a well executed, but overpriced (in my opinion) magwell for the SA-35; and they also sell some pricey 17 round magazines (+2 baseplate equipped); allowing the same capacity as this gun. Although it is considered an evolution of the design, I do not consider this new, FN gun, to be a High Power. Just as I do not consider a Springfield Prodigy to be a 1911.

    • @MDpolo
      @MDpolo  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Well said and I agree with your comment. I’ve held both and in my hand, the FN feels better than the SA35. Thank you very much for stopping by.

    • @colt10mmsecurity68

I’d only get the new FN if the price was 1/3rd LESS. To me, it’s just not a “Hi Power.” I like the SA-35 better and I don’t need an Apex mag well nor their over priced 17 round magazines. Sometimes “good enough,” just is.

@@colt10mmsecurity68 I managed to pick up a FN High Power for $1049 slightly used. I really wanted the SA-35 but my hands are too meaty for the hammer. I love the FN it runs like a dream and is so smooth. The aftermarket will eventually catch up. If you can get it for a good price get it.

From what I recall FNH put out the P35 9mm in 1935. I think John M Browning passed ⚰️ prior to wide release of the P35, Hi Power.

Back in the 1980s 1990s gunsmith Karl Sokol of VT's Chestnut Mountain Sports was widely known for Hi Power 9mm, .40 model work. Work for US special ops, FBI/DEA/Secret Service agents. I read a few articles saying how impressive Sokol's skill was in the 1990s.

I want to get this in FDE as my primary range gun. I would would expect it to hold up for a lifetime because its all steel, but im curious of anyone thinks that maybe the FDE coating wont last that long? Any opinions?

Never have seen one in person yet but I'd cd it hange the grips immediately. 40oz and the barrel lock up etc to a modern design I mean I'll take it. My option the branding of the gun was poorly executed. People have questioned if this new gun is actually a Hi Power and it clearly is. FN should of called it the Mk4.

I've always wanted a Hi Power, but for that price? Way too much. I could buy the Chiappa 1887 model for around that amount (a gun I would LOVE to have, but again, too much money) That's not the only gun at that price range I'd look at for something else. Even the Springfield version is just a bit too much. I don't know, I guess I'm just a cheap penny pincher. Overall though, they're both beautiful guns and are a part of history. The Hi Power is definitely one of my favorite classic guns, and is shadowed by the 1911, Luger, etc. They deserve more love.

@@MDpolo thanks for responding, ive owned a number of FNs, my first being an FNX 9 mil. Surprisingly enough, the standard 17 rnd fn mag has cycled my fnsc and my 509c. This hi power is a goal of mine. And it would be totally awesome to see it run the 24rnd mag.

I do think the changes are all good, but I also think they went too half and half with it. No light rail, no red dot mounts, plain sights, etc. seems like obvious oversights given the entire goal of this gun was to modernize the original Hi Power.
Also, while it’s nice that changes were made, not sure if all the changes were necessary since it also means all aftermarket support is thrown out. The added capacity is really the only absolutely necessary improvement since I did think even the SA-35 with its 15+1 capacity was too low, but other stuff probably could’ve been retained and I’m sure no one would complain.
I usually like to contrast this gun with double stack 1911s like the 2011 or even Para-Ordnance guns where the guns do add all those nice modern features like higher capacity, light rails, better sights, etc. but the frames still retain as much compatibility with standard 1911 parts as possible. You can use just normal 1911 parts for the entire upper as well as most of the frame. Only a few parts are truly proprietary. Does mean some of the old holdovers in the 1911 design are retained, but as long as you upgrade the important parts, maintaining compatibility with the large 1911 aftermarket is probably more important than updating everything.

@@MDpolo Thanks. Ironically it was also double stack 1911s that made me want the added capacity of this current FN High Power, to the point where if a rail and red dot mount were added to this gun, I would declare it superior to the classic Hi-Power in every way. The SA-35 has a capacity of 15+1 9mm, while my custom double stack 1911 has a 15+1 capacity of .45ACP.
Given the original Hi-Power was famous for having significantly higher capacity than the 1911, there’s something sacrilege about having a 1911 in .45ACP with the same capacity as a Hi-Power, so the FN gun going to a properly modern 17+1 is nice.

It's the equivalent of car companies using the name of one iconic, beloved car to smear it across all their models while almost everything is changed but the name. I still think it's a good, reliable firearm but there are lots of others that don't have that bad aftertaste.
The big ejection port allows for machining from above saving cost using the browning-whiting like locking shoulder and brings more profit while the name holds up the price tag.
Afaik, the main reason besides the tooling was that they had to deal with servicing that insane amount of hipowers and they wanted to stop. At the same time there is similarity to iconic guitars where the fans moan if a big flaw is changed cause it used to be the same.
Isn't the F35 of SA also discontinued?
The hipower was changed a lot after Browning's death and his 'assistant' that had the idea to make it double stack which made it so popular could do more. That then head engineer Dieudonné Saive made lots of Browning's projects a success after he was gone like the baby browning. He also made what became the FAL. I highly recommend the playlist 'Hipower University' of BHSpringsolutions: watch?v=ZbuDgA5b4R4.
