Jorge Ituarte and those statistics you have on electric cars are flat it wrong according to current estimates: th-cam.com/video/6RhtiPefVzM/w-d-xo.html This video covers both CO2 emissions and the effects of mining rare metals from the earth. Electric cars are more environmentally friendly. And lithium isn’t even the primary material used in lithium ion batteries for Teslas. They’re more worried about cobalt, but even Tesla has been cutting down on its usage of rare metals in its battery packs, and this can be seen in the Model 3’s ratio of cobalt compared to other materials. And batteries are going to keep getting better and better over the years as breakthroughs keep getting discovered and they become more popular. Tesla, nor the EV are going anywhere anytime soon. Even hydrogen cars have their problems, the biggest one being that producing large amounts of hydrogen can be extremely difficult and demanding.
James, I hadn't noticed until you pointed out that frame. I've been driving BMW's since the late '60s and Mustangs since our new '66 convertible. I like them both but I'm getting really disappointed in the direction BMW is taking. I got my invitation to test drive about half a dozen new BMWs in San Francisco a couple of months ago so what the hell... it's on their dime; why not? I drove my '01 330xi down to the Cow Palace and tried out an afternoon's worth of new cars. This 850 is about the same as the others but with a bit more glittery trim. I don't want a $100K video game! They've been drifting away from their "Sports Sedan/Coupe" heritage and more into the mainstream plush, fast, cruisers. I'll keep my E46 3-Series, manual 5-speed, all-wheel drive, straight six. It's quick (not like 350-400 hp but respectable), handles very well, and the 5 speed gives the driver much more immediate control of the performance.
@@MrGaryGG48 I agree with you Gary, I've been a little disenchanted with BMW's of late. The way the M division has been bastardized has me more excited with other brands lately.
George Cope, why shouldn’t they? A Diesel is the most efficient engine you can get for long distance travel. It makes complete sense for a GT car as its main purpose is the „Grand Tour“.
Complete waste of money. Price will drop like a bomb once you buy it and if anything goes wrong, it will cost an absolute fortune to fix. If you have that kind of money, buy a used entry level McLaren and you would get so much more for your money. Great review as always though Henry!
So true. My friend's been selling BMWs for a few years now; he says the main cars (3-series, 5-series, X3s, and X5s) are quite reliable overall if you don't spec any V8s. But the even-numbered cars, the low-volume cars (4s, 6s, 7s, X4s, X6s, Z4s), and anything with a V8 come in with problems all the times. Depreciation is monstrous on any BMW unless you're getting into something really special that holds its value...inevitably that's only the small lower-production M cars (1M Coupe, M2, M2 Competition, M3/M4 CS or GTS)
Anyone buying a secondhand Maclaren would not be rich enough to dealer service it. Buying a secondhand 8 series will be affordable with reasonable service costs.
I always enjoy Henry Catchpole's laid back, but informative and totally unbiased reviews. I really like the 8-series' looks. It sounds like a good drive too, but I wish BMW made a bit lighter. A sporty GT coupe shouldn't weigh as much as a full sized Super Saloon like the M5, which it does. Also, being as big as it is, the 8 to be roomier in the back. But that aside, I really like the new 8.
I'm tired of tech in cars. Example: my friend has a Mk7 VW GTI SE with all the tech options (automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive shocks, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and start). I have a Mk7 VW Golf Alltrack S with no tech options (I turn the key to start the ignition, have no sunroof, have passive shocks, and no automatic braking or lane keeping or anything. Just ABS, power windows, and traction control because they're standard). His car is a year older than mine and several of his active safety systems are on the fritz at under 40k miles. He regrets getting the sunroof due to its high weight, and we both know the DCC shocks will be quite expensive to replace. He tells me about problems his car has, and I tell him one thing: _"That's why I got the S"._ I got the S because I plan ahead in my car ownership. Most tech goes obsolete or fails much, much faster than the car, and it's idiotic. I specifically sought out an S even though there were almost none on dealer lots and EVERY dealer would sell me an SE for the same price, but I wanted LESS tech. I know I will be happier with my car in the long run the less there is to go wrong with it. *Features today are just headaches tomorrow.*
Matt Clark I totally agree with what you've said there. More tech means more things to go wrong and it's worrying to hear that your mate's car has features that are starting to fail below 40k miles! Cars filled with tech in years to come will just feel reallly outdated too. That's why I bought a Ford Fiesta (2014) as I knew it didn't have too much tech in it but the stuff it does have works rather well (Bluetooth audio, handsfree). Alright, the display screen is a bit dated but otherwise its features should stand the test of time better than the interiors of some of the Fiesta's contemporaries.
Matt, your comment is very well taken! Just check out the latest 7-Series. There is more "tech stuff" in the back seat than anything had in total 5 years ago. Just imagine how much fun that will be to maintain when its 5 years old! The price of purchase drops like a rock but the cost of maintenance sure doesn't!!
Agree. Also, with active safety systems you have, as a driver, the bad habit of relying on them more than normal. You as a driver, have to be always aware, because in real safety situations, the good reactions and quick thinking of the driver make the difference between life and death.
Vlad Mihai Absolutely... the world is raising worse and worse drivers, and the more tech, the dumber people will be. I see no good coming from this, in any aspect of life, honestly.
I'd much rather have an lc500 tbh. it looks a lot better and is much more striking on the road compared to this, the interior in the Lexus is much nicer, and its probably infinitely more reliable
Per usual, great video. Regarding this new 8 series, I wish it looked well... a little more outrageous. The Z8, i8 and original 8 series always looked exotic. This one just kind of looks like a large 2 series... or 4 series... or 6 series. It’s way to safe to wear an 8 badge.

It's funny how opinions can differ... Henry seems rather unimpressed by the 8-series interior/exterior design, but I happen to think it's one of the best looking cars I've seen in a long time... Oh well, 'to each his own' I guess.
That's just really how it is..and you know somethin the majority of the automotive industry has warmed up behind that fact. They've praise BMW's new interiors, this is sleek sexy and sporty up there with aston and Maserati easy
Tech in cars, I could do without most of it! Big part of why I bought an Evora 400 was it seemed to have everything it needed - parking sensors and camera because rear visibility is crap, workable sat-nav, air-con, electric mirrors and heated seats - and no superfluous bits that it doesn't. It has MP3 and Bluetooth audio options, but I've never used it because I realised years ago that I want to focus fully on driving and what is happening around me - even on long motorway journeys its amazing how much more I'm aware of when I'm focused purely on driving as opposed to music or talk radio.
To me this is a 911 competitor despite being angled as a "GT" car. Problem is the 911 is just as practical and useable every day and, based on weight alone I'll wager, miles better to drive. Henry's review came across to me as being polite rather than genuinely excited.
Henry... You have always been a great car guy... I just dont get why you didnt do your homework on this one. The exhaust are actually real. And even your favorite brand Ford pipes fakery into the cabin. Every car manufacturer does it... And we need to get over it and move on... Anyway love the videos and Better luck next time around.
What a realistic review! What’s crap is crap. No need to make it look good. Especially the comparison with the 3 series. I would give a 100 likes if i could just for that one comparison!
i have ONE question about that car.....does it have static blinkers or moving ones like the new audis? does someone know a vid where you can see the blinkers PLS?
Looks like a face lifted 6 series and knowing the fact that its a 4WD kinda kills the joy .. I tried to find any reason to justify the 100k price tag but I couldn’t find one .. i guess its their way of making it rare on the streets and to hold its value .
Honestly I don't understand you. This interior is WAY BETTER when compared to the old 3 series or even the new one. Much better in quality than the A7. For me beautiful and a giant step forward for BMW.
Do I want a Panasonic Hi Fi with numerous buttons settings, or a top end marantz with a button for turning it on and one for volume control... The Germans do not quite 'get' luxury like the Brits and the Italians do. Sorry, but it's true. I'd rather have a second hand Ferrari or an Aston Martin- driver focused, authentic full of feedback and looking great! None of this tech heavy pseudo luxury awkwardly styled with fake noise B.S. that we see here.
40Tman if they make it, but they won’t offer it if the M8 has a V8 which it seems like it will. Really sad though, without the V12 option this is just a fat 6 series IMO.
He forgot to mention the fake, or rather amplified, engine sound. I absolutely hate this trend in new cars as well. Once you know it you simply cannot un-know it.
About how much tech I use: a fraction of what most new cars offer. That's partly thanks to the fact that I like oldschool cars more, I drive a 1997 BMW E36 328i Convertible in the summer which I would never exchange for a new 4-series, but I have a company car which is a new VW Passat and I did drive new cars for longer periods of time. What I really use is the navigation and music - those are the two tech things in cars I really can't live without. But these two can be had in any old car, you just need a phone mount, a car charger and a proper head unit + some nice speakers, so you don't exactly need a new car for these. What I don't mind not having but like a lot when I do are the blind spot indicators (especially since newer cars tend to have worse visibility), head-up display, and the practical bits like tire pressure sensors, better headlights making night driving more pleasant (although that can be improved on any car), Android Auto (since I use my phone's navigation anyway, even if the car has built-in navigation), and basically that's it. Most of the tech in new cars is just another thing to go wrong for me, so I rather stick to older, more reliable/easier to fix technology that's still able to fulfill my needs. And of course, so much tech and engineering refinement kinda makes new cars more like robots compared to older cars with more 'soul' in them.
@ModHunter: Totally with you...except I do not need navigation and music either. I do not listen to music when driving and I have Google Maps on my phone. Do not need anything else. Does the nav in a current Audi in the middle of the gauges look fancy? OMG, for sure. Can I live without? Yes. Recently had a BMW 430 as a rental and the entire I drive I was just fiddling and playing around. Together with that horrible steering I must have looked like a drunk driver from the rear. Stopped fiddling when came off onto the emergency lane. Maybe to be able to switch with one single button from sport to comfort for both sound and suspension would be sufficient for me.
@@mauiman52 I listen to music only when I do my daily commute in the city, heavy traffic jams and all that nerve-breaking stuff, I need my music in those circumstances. When I drive the E36 with the N/A straight-six and the top down, I don't need any music for sure :) For navigation I use Waze, that's why I love Android Auto. The Passat I've been driving for a little more than a year is very well-equipped, and I remember when I started using it after the previous company car, a not very well-equipped Golf VI, I was also playing around with all of the tech for about a week. It was confusing, even for me as an IT developer. I love cars and I love driving, some of these high-tech gadgets are nice to have but they distract me, and they make me uncomfortable. I feel much better in the old BMW, no stupid notifications, no stupid beeping and chimes without serious reasons, instead a more engaging driving experience and a much superior engine.
Thank you for your excellent review. It's exactly as you say. To me it looks like they slapped an 8 series badge on there and didn't go all the way with a wow interior and exterior. They might be good to drive but so are a lot of other cars in that price segment.
I actually really like it. I like how it looks, it makes a great noise in both the diesel and petrol versions, and it's not too ostentatious or vulgar like the Mercedes S Class.
gasolara2002 Well my friend, that’s basically what it is. No more 6 series... so it’s the same thing with a different badge. In my opinion this doesn’t look 8 series to me.

NA is awful, wow sound, listen to it make sound! I don't care about that, nothing beats turbos when it comes to power on tap, at any time in any gear
This car is awesome 👏🏻
will the first en 850 increase in value now?
What a realistic review! What’s crap is crap. No need to make it look good. Especially the comparison with the 3 series. I would give a 100 likes if i could just for that one comparison!
Some of the tech features like the gesture control are unnecessary and gimmicky but they're cool and my kids get excited.
i have ONE question about that car.....does it have static blinkers or moving ones like the new audis? does someone know a vid where you can see the blinkers PLS?
Looks like a face lifted 6 series and knowing the fact that its a 4WD kinda kills the joy .. I tried to find any reason to justify the 100k price tag but I couldn’t find one .. i guess its their way of making it rare on the streets and to hold its value .
where is the drag race between the cullinan and the bentayga?
Is this basically a wraith?
Hey carfection, where's your lexus lc review?
Sounds very impressive but Henry did make a great point about an M4 Competition offering a very similar experience for much less coin.
Still waiting for my Twin Turbo V12
Rook Mine Boi I’m waiting for my quad turbo W16
@@jdlarson11 damn straight
M860i will have a v12 i think
40Tman if they make it, but they won’t offer it if the M8 has a V8 which it seems like it will. Really sad though, without the V12 option this is just a fat 6 series IMO.
The 8 Series looks like a Mustang. I was wondering how long before the Germans ripped off the Mustang.
Logistical reasons is the PC way of saying that Shmee150 was hogging the petrol version? Great video though.
m850 is fantastic getting to drives works was just wow
I may be wrong but is it ridicolous to offer sport coupe model with diesel engine?
i hope M8 will look exactly like the concept
fresh, sharp, modern
these look just like old 6-series to me
What happen to the previous video ??!
Thank you for your excellent review. It's exactly as you say. To me it looks like they slapped an 8 series badge on there and didn't go all the way with a wow interior and exterior. They might be good to drive but so are a lot of other cars in that price segment.
Ugh, do we not get the diesel in the US? Not that I can afford either, but the diesel actually seems really nice!
1:35 dude is 1.95m tall
Absolutely, Positively, Fantastic!!!!!!!
I actually really like it. I like how it looks, it makes a great noise in both the diesel and petrol versions, and it's not too ostentatious or vulgar like the Mercedes S Class.
Amazing vid
For that price it isn’t special enough. Especially with the competition that’s about.
I agree. Better to get an Aston or similar at that price
I want a comparison against AMG GT or LC500
I rather have the AMG or 850. The Lexus looks weird from the inside and outside from some angles
I hope they offer it with a performance version of the V12 from the 760i.
Rapha sighting! Likewise Henry... I’ll hold off any emotional investment until the M8 arrives, especially at this price point.
will this car eventually get a 6 cylinder petrol engine?
Brutish guys are gonna have a good deal of puns for the M version of the 8 series
U wot m8 ?
Yes it indeed does resemble a Mustang!
??
If i want to get a coupe style 4 doors car for a cheap price, what car should I get? Prefer the new one
Why the 8 series when there is Porsche 911 for this kind of money?
1:06 Side profile is literally a Mustang.
Going blind I would assume
I'm disappointed. I expected better. It just looks like a 6 series with updated tech and drivetrain.
gasolara2002 Well my friend, that’s basically what it is.
No more 6 series... so it’s the same thing with a different badge. In my opinion this doesn’t look 8 series to me.
