- Why Ennui Felt Unnecessary in Inside Out 2 and How It Could've Been Improved? Inside Out 2 mainly focuses on Anxiety taking over Riley's mind, with Joy and the core emotions trying to regain control. Ennui, representing boredom, spends most of her time glued to her phone, often ignoring the chaos around her. This limited role made Ennui feel like an unnecessary addition, as she didn't contribute much to the story. Interestingly, Ennui can control the headquarters' console via an app on her phone, highlighting her potential importance. Many viewers felt Ennui could have been more integral to the plot. For example, if Ennui had sided with Joy and the others from the start to challenge Anxiety, it would have allowed her character to stand out and provided more depth to the new emotions introduced in the sequel. A potential Inside Out 3 could redeem Ennui by giving her a more significant role, similar to how the latest movie expanded on Fear, Anger, and Disgust's dynamics with Joy.

Ennui's job is to save Riley from spending energy on unnecessary things. She also helps Riley keep her chill.
So basically to balance out Anxiety
though they could have pushed that to the limit so we can see Riley so unmotivated and not wanting to do anything anymore, for example, as a consequence of all the pressure involved with Anxiety.
@@ChipitaDraws I guess but I think it’s with all the other emotions as well in the movie and concept are you can see the other emotions freaking out and deciding on what to do and then Ennui just steps in. The movie example was Riley freaking out about the boy band.

They could of used Ennui to counter Anxiety and the panic attack towards the end.
Ennui is definitely needed; teen apathy is very real and she is good contrast for anxiety/envy/ embarrassment.
Especialy since Ennui can help Riley have a "chill" and "neutral" reaction to something the other emotions have no idea what to do.

Exactly! I was so relieved when she saved Riley from being exposed as a fan of some boy band that Val and her friends hated. That scene saved Riley so good. Ennui is a literal ICON.

@@DFK_Edits Lying can be for the good. This is the real world. It's easy to relate to Riley because all of us have aged up with her. In this movie I was (and most people who relate to her) were rooting for Riley. Sometimes team anxiety did good choices for the sake of saving Riley. Just because they're portrayed as the antagonist doesn't mean that everything about them is bad. They're literally emotions.

They say less is more. Ennui doesn't need to have a big role, because her function to keep things casual.
This is best shown at the end when the emotions bicker on what to tell Mom only for Ennui to give an easy solution.

in the one scene, where Riley is trying to empress Val, she talks about a boy band using sarcasm, which is cased by ennui and I think in another scene, if I remember right, she makes Riley act cool around Val by not caring as much and then again in that one scene with the mom where she does the simple answer of how camp was “good” even though it was nothing short of a disaster, so in some scenes she’s used for comedic relief, while in others she’s actually really useful but the reason she’s on her phone almost the whole movie is bc she’s portrayed as boredom so she doesn’t wanna get up.

I think Ennui could have had a more relevant role if she took control in a certain point of the movie where Riley was so exhausted that leads her to a state of total unmotivation.
That way we could have visualized what it means to push certain emotions to the limit like we all saw with Anxiety.

Her role is not that significant but we should not exclude her since she plays an important part especially when sadness wants to take over the console via ennui's phone after anxiety took over

I mean there was also the Sar-chasm part too. That was integral because the chasm is the reason why all the rejected memories flowed into the lake of beliefs when Joy exploded it at the end.
Also ennui was important to convey the vibe of teenagers. Without Ennui Riley wouldn’t have felt like a genuine teenager.
Sure they can expand her character in the third sequel, but i think they gave her the perfect amount of attention in this one.

Ennui is the boredom emotion, of course she’ll be an antisocial, a phone addicted and a carefree character. Plus she’s not being helpful to anyone because she’s the embodiment of boredom, she’s just so done with everything like a bored one and doesn’t care about anything like it should be. Basically stop calling her useless before looking at the whole picture.
I know right? The same goes for Envy! She was the one encouraging Anxiety’s nutty behavior and part of the reason they were drastically changing Riley.

I feel like Ennui wouldn’t do much just by design. Boredom is a pretty sedentary emotion, so it would make sense that anytime something significant was happening to Riley, she would be engaged in whatever it is, and would have no need for boredom. Since we’re watching a movie, they’re obviously not going to show a awful lot of dull moments for Riley or the movie would be boring, so it makes sense that Ennui doesn’t get an awful lot of screen time.
Boredom helps with anxiety . They go hand in hand . Kind of like sadness that follows joy .

The funny thing is that character is the embodiment of the apathy that was consuming Riley in the climax of the first movie you think that would matter a bit more considering.
Ennui is the reason why joy and others went back to head quarters fastly. Without Ennui's sar-chasm, they wouldn't be able to get there in time. Also if sar-chasm didn't happen, the avalanche would go to where bingbong dies, they'll be forgotten. Without Ennui's sar-chasm, Riley will not find her personality because all those memories the main five throws will not go to the stream. Although I agree, she lacks screentime lol.

for those of you who are saying that some of the emotions were unnecessary, In my opinion the productors made an amazing job on showing every emotion in there own unique "emotion", i mean anxiety taking the lead was so true about EVERYONE'S LIFE and with envy taking a big part on "controlling" riley by being anxiety's number 2. I do think they could have let embarrassment and ennui to control a bit more, but surely they productors made an amazing way of showing every emotion with the fact that there are NINE of them, in a movie that is only 96 minutes long.
fear and disgust, in my opinion added alot (for those of you who said that they were only for the jokes) with the fact that in inside out 1 they barely gave these two a part of the movie (cause it was mostly focused on joy and sadness), and now in inside out 2 they gave EVERY emotion a big part!

Ennui could've been in the first movie being part of the goth Girls group but Sarcasm is a very power thing and Ennui knows how to make use of it.

I feel like Ennui’s big part is basically keeping Riley at ease, like Fear keeps Riley safe and Disgust keeps Riley from being poisoned (mentally and/or physically). Basically if Riley gets too excited or too scared or too embarrassed or sad, Ennui is there to chill or calm her down.

Ennui is important she had a role in the story where she made Riley act like she didn't love something she used to do sarcasm and she also controls the headquarters, has an amazing opening, tries to find her phone when Sadness takes it and she even participated at the end and hugged Riley's thoughts with the other emotions 😊 Ofcourse Ennui is important and they showed her character PERFECTLY 😊
Even so, I felt the character was still quite related to me (and perhaps to many other people, not only due to the fact of the puberty stage), in addition to having obtained greater participation than Nostslgia, despite feeling more like a comic relief

Overall Sadness Embarrassment and Ennui's remote felt like it should've been a bigger storyline, but it's very thin as it is now; we only get a couple scenes of Sadness and Embarrassment actually doing anything with the remote and then it's just immediately undone and Sadness is bucketed for the rest of the movie
