    Sugar does have a specific meaning. It's about consumerism in general...The kombucha mushroom people is a reference to the type of people who are seemingly "inteligent" but more-or-less think they know everything, while actually just sitting around talking about how everyone else is wrong, as opposed to actually doing something about the worlds problems (was a lot more true back in the 90's than it is today. Back then, people didn't actually know why kombucha was healthy, it just was because some guru said so. Gut biome stuff wasn't studied until post-90's). "Sugar" has multiple contextual references here. From consumerism, the addiction to shallow pleasures (including drugs, food, and television), and how the 'system' manipulates people by making them believe they're being smart (aka aspartame instead of sugar still feeds your addiction and is equally unhealthy by way of overconsumption). All of these things are "insane", akin to flipping out with a gun "but feeling better" afterwards. It's a system of instant gratification.... "In the end it all goes away", is not a nihilistic view, unless it's from the consumer/addicts perspective. In this context though, the general tone of the song is that all of these selfish, superficial, and even ignorant choices, are what is pointless in the end. Not that life is pointless, but that, as humans, we should be much more engaged in the depths of life and reality instead of just moving through time on some kind of blind auto-pilot type of existence.

      A lot if their lyrics draw inspiration from the Dadaist movement, which was a surrealist, anti-art response to the view that cultural norms and conformity to logic and reason in capitalist western society was a cause of World War 1. So their lyrics a lot of the time literally have no deeper meaning than a pushback against expectations.

    "Sugar high" ... "Sugar coat" ... "Sugar daddy" ... just a few expressions from the word. It's either fake or fleeting... I think that's the message of the song... what's real is not always sweet. It's just what's preferable is to swallow the sugar...
    A song is art. And art is always open to interpretation...

    Sugar outside of the drug meaning could also be literal sugar that they’re talking about. This song talks about sensationalism and control to get you to always come back to what the people in charge want you to come back to. There’s sugar in almost any processed food nowadays to get your brain to come back to that food. There’s studies that show that sugar is as/more addictive than cocaine.

      @@jstack8955 Sorry, but that is simply not true. Eat a handfull of sugar and tell me you can not stop eating it. Most likely not even going to be able to eat one hand full of sugar. The point is having a mixture of sugar and fat. Both on their own are nothing special, it is always the mixture. Sugar is not bad for you. The only downside of it is, that it increases calorie density in food a lot and you overconsume on calorie and therefore get fat.

    • @shelbycarr4682
      @shelbycarr4682 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Wollestar processed sugars are addictive. They're in everything. We're not talking natural conventional sugar.
      Aspartame: an artificial sweetener, has been linked to behavioral & cognitive problems. Possible neurophysiological symptoms include learning problems, headache, seizure, migranes, irritable moods, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. When processed in the body it breaks down into something similar to formaldehyde.
      High fructose corn syrup: one of the leading contributors to obesity and diabetes. Like aspartame, it is one of the most common sweeteners. Found in many sodas and fruit-flavored drinks.

    • @Wollestar
      @Wollestar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shelbycarr4682 I will stand by my point and I will recommend you to watch the channel biolayne. You might accidentally learn something.
      Aspartame by the way is a combined amino acid, so it consists of the main sturctural components of protein. It is one of the most well studied non-nutrient substances and is absolutely safe to use. By the way, since it is essentially an amino acid, it is not really artificial. Meat for example contains it naturally and a steak actually contains several times more aspartame, than a can of diet coke does. So please stop blaming artificial sweeteners. They are not harmfull, unless you overdose them significantly. But that happens with everything when you overdose it. Even water.
      And now I would really like to know the difference between conventional sugar and processed sugar. Because according to my knowledge, sugar, as you can find it in a bag in the supermarket, is by definition processed. You take a plant that contains sucrose, you put it into a rafinery, basically boil the sugar out of the plant and there you have it. Conventional sugar does not exist naturally in the soil or anything. It is always processed.
      And if I were to follow your argumentation, than fructose, the most natural sugar form you can imagine, shouldn´t be a problem because it is no artificial/processed sugar, right? Because fructose comes from fruits and corn and so on, you know...
      But let´s put the bs aside. The only reason fructose corn syrup leads to obesity, is the fact that even a small amount of it already contains a shit load of calories. And since most people do not realize, that stuff you drink, also contains calories and it is very easy to consume liquids, compared to solid food, people overconsume on calories. That has nothing to do with the fructose or sugar, but the people not paying attention to calorie content.
      And just as a side note. The amount of carbohydrate consumption in first world countries went down by approx. 25% since 2000. Guess what did not go down in the mean time? Exactly, obesity and fat consumption. But don´t get me wrong. Fat is important as well, same like sugar/carbs. I just hate that people want to point out one specific macro nutrient or a specific food as the one evil that has to be avoided at all cost.
      I am always impressed with the amount of bs that exist on the internet, when it comes to nutrition.

This brings back memories of a party , he got the Sample CD a couple days before, and it was the only thing the punks and the metal heads could agree on listening too (it sits somewhere in between the 2), so it got rinsed and repeated over and over that night. Just fun to listen and not think about it too much cause of the kinda funny tone in the way they play and sing. Dig in once then just listen and have fun after that. I dont know anyone that doesnt stop whatever they are doing to do the "Sitting in my desolate room. No Lights. No Music." part whenever it plays lol

    If the creators of this video read this:
    As a African-American grew up in the Bronx for a large part of my life, I was mainly listening to hip hop and R&B of course ( because of the dominant influence in 80s/90s/Early 2000) but around 1999 I listened to my FIRST EVER Rock song by them: “AERIALS” mainly because I was intrigued by the Eccentric/Bizzare Visual effects of the video (MTV)
    Soon after I started listening to ALL THIS SONGS, and they are Soooooo Dope! I listen to them to this day. IN FACT while riding my bike the last few days.
    Their songs (just like Evanescence, never gets old to me)
    One thing I noticed about S.O.A.D. is that even someone that might of been closed minded about Rock being weird will still Bop their head in amusement to Their very catchy beats and words.
    If y’all don’t know they are all of ARMENIAN decent.
    The lead Singer SERG is a legend
    Just his Dynamic energy, voice and
    for his weird facial expression he does Stretching his eyes to side Lol. It’s safe to say that he is the backbone of the group.
    Lastly, the majority of their songs is about Revolutionary/uprising against oppression, government etc.
    You sometimes have to DECODE OR DECIPHER the hidden/multiple meanings behind their words and visual images. Sometimes sarcasm and Seemingly dark things but all with education on a issue behind the scenes.
    I recommend listening to, and even reacting to some of these songs:
    1. Chop Suey
    2. Deer Dance
    3. Inner vision
    4. Deer Dance
    5. Bounce
    6. Lonely Day
    7. Aerials
    8.Forest
    9.Hollywood
    Experiment and Google what the meanings of some of these songs hidden meaning are about. start with AERIALS! You’ll be suprised
    They are actually really Cool, Goodhearted dudes!

    I always see two meanings to this song.
    1. Someone who sees the insanity in our everyday life but doesn't know how to cope with it. It drives them nuts and causes them to lash out at those around them and go insane. The beginning news report is reminiscent of the current "fake news" theory and sugar is more of a metaphor to how there is something that is killing us slowly but we ignore it because it tastes good. (The amount of sugar put into EVERY THING we consume is slowly killing us, FACT!)
    2. The drug thing that Lex alluded too.

      It's the same thing. Society they way we are structured to live is toxic. It's "sugar" coated to keep us participating in it while it destroys us in many ways. Sugar coating could be money, sex, drugs, food, power, status, etc. The more we live and participate in the toxic society, people break start to break down resort to violence, self harm, become fearful, selfish, cruel, have mental illness, act greedy, and nihilistic.

    this was their very first single when they were still making "metal/rock club music to mosh to" compared to their later albums. my favorite songs on their self-titled/first album would be Suggestions and Spiders - both really great tunes. their later albums are less odd/chaotic lol, but SOAD always keeps you on your toes ;)

    The song is about consumerism and addiction. Sugar releases dopamine like alchole, sex and other addictive things. The song itself is about capatilsm essentially addicting you so you will consume.

    • @ellem8990
      @ellem8990 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would also add alienation, thos kind of go hand in hand. Not just alienation due to consuming what you don't even necessarily like, which can cause the feeling of alienation aswell, but also that the reason why people consume these things is often as a result of the feelings related to alienation.
      If they hadn't added things about working 9 to 5, asking if these things you do/think/feel are yours and actually make you happy, I maybe would've more just thought they wanted to only talk about consumerism. Well also the ending is more of a nod towards alienation, because they do mention sitting alone etc and then the "what do I feel what do I say" line.
      Definitely a critique of capitalism, sad that it seems like only those that already know the right things are able to understand it (as with many things critiqueing capitalism) and people can't really get away with directly naming the issue.

    I've always looked at this song as the media lieing to people about aspartame being okay. It was approved in the 80's in America then quickly was added to everything. There are many side effects to it the big ones are cancer, and ADHD, but there are tons more. The fda has always said that it is safe and tested but there are tons of conspiracies about it out there. I think he is comparing it with cocaine in the song because many cocaine addicts have violent tendencies. I also think this is why they end the song getting faster and faster.

    The song is about sensationalism and how it can drive people insane. The "sugar" part is analogous to what you often see on TV, which are constant commercials for unhealthy behaviors and products. The "kombucha mushroom people" are the consumers who sit and watch this all day. The protagonist of the song is driven crazy by all of it so he kills people and is sent to prison. He says he is "feeling better" because he no longer has to be around it anymore. The prosecutors or psychiatrists or whatever ask him "how do you feel, what do you say" and he says "fuck you, it all goes away" meaning he's happy to be away from all of it

    One band I regret never having seen in concert. I have seen interviews with these guys and know a little of the background. They are pretty heavy, very outspoken politically. Culturally they are Armenian. Most people don't know the history behind that. Happy reading. It's your history lesson for the day:)

    I believe when he describes hitting his girl, the meaning has to do with domestic violence driven by "sugar" A.K.A. drugs. They also may be describing the food industry as well, a double entendre because of the additives and preservatives put into what most of us ingest on a daily basis. The intro was just another way of creating the same recurring theme, from the news anchor delivering palatable news, to revealing the subliminal with more intent. This song is like a parody of selective information.

    The songs are mainly open for interpretation and the deeper you are the deeper the meaning behind them, my interpretation of the song is that the system WE created pretty much teaches us to be ignorant, put ourselves in solitude, kill each-other, anaesthetise and distract ourselves. We invented the internet to connect people and it’s the leading cause of disagreement 99% of the time. 😂
