  • This is our first time hearing System of a Down. This Chop Suey is a pretty interesting song. It has layers and seemingly a lot of randomness. It's a catchy tune.

    Daron said the song is about how people are unfairly judged when they lose their life because of a drug addiction or because of suicide. "I cry when angels deserve to die" is basically saying it makes him sad when good people die because of their unfortunate circumstances. "grab a brush and put a little makeup, hide the scars to fade away the shakeup, whyd you leave the keys up on the table" essentially saying people put on "makeup" and hide their pain to avoid judgement, and that if your going to commit suicide you wont need your keys to get back in the house. For the bridge they actually randomly opened a bible and put their fingers on a paragraph and it was the "father into your hands I commend my spirit" part. Then they played off of that and related it to the overall theme of the song. Really deep song here by system of a down, but most people dont realize it because of how intense the song is.

    The part about “father in to your hands, I commit my spirit” comes from the Bible - Luke 23:46 when Jesus calls out his last words before dying on the cross to God. Interesting tidbit, they were at an impasse with figuring out that part of the song so they went to Rick Rubin’s house - producer of all good things - and he told Serj (lead singer) to grab a book off the shelf and open to a page and read it to come up with his bridge/chorus. He opened to that part of a bible and the rest is history.

    ONE OF THE ONLY REACTION CHANNELS THAT ARENT FAKE AF! You are even straight up when you don't like something. One week half these reactors are drum critics, the next the same reactors are vocal coaches! They haven't heard some of the most major songs from major bands throughout all genres. What do the do in the car since birth, sit in silence? Do they not watch movies and hear some of these songs they react to. Then they're scared to say when they aren't actually a fan of what they react to. No way they like every damn song from multiple genres, unless they just have no real taste and just like everything. You already know word for word what most are going to say. Wtf!? Lost in Vegas, Jamal, trash talkers, Stevie Knight, and "Coach" are about all I listen to anymore until I come across your channel. Much respect for honest opinions and reactions! Tired of droll "Woooooow!" reactions in some reactor's videos.

    One of the best parts of SOAD, and in particular Toxicity as an album, is that you don't actually need to really "get" the songs on the first or second pass. SOAD are such effective musicians that the music holds up so well on its own merit, and the lyrics and interpretation of them can be a whole different thing.

    THIS IS AMAZING! I loved this video. More System of a Down! The lyrics are amazing to dissect and ripe with sociopolitical commentary, the music between the beautiful harmonies and Armenian influence and harder rock/metal - it's just a fucking vibe. Bonus - they have so so many dope songs across their five albums. If you enjoyed the amazing transitions of hard rock and melodic harmonies, you'll like most of their catalogue. This band is a defining artists of the 9/11 generation. The world changed in those years, and SOAD was the soundtrack for many adolescents and young adults in that time. Because of the lyrics of this song actually, it was quite controversial when it was released in getting radio play or not (because of 9/11 and the suicides). Favorite songs I'd suggest: Holy Mountains (very powerful about the Armenian Genocide - check the 2015 live concert in Armenia for the first time in the rain); Aerials (a very popular song); BYOB (popular party song); Toxicity (one of their most famous)

    SOAD is a trip all in itself. They're deep yet cryptic and sometimes you have to listen to a song half a dozen times to get what they're saying even with the lyrics on hand, but definitely worth diving into head first and no looking back. And don't get hung up on song titles because they're often completely random. Other songs to check out Toxicity, Hypnotize, BYOB, Question, Aerials, Lonely Day, Lost in Hollywood, Revenga, Cigaro, Old School Hollywood, Shimmy, Radio/Video, Sad Statue, and This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song.
    Fun bit of trivia, the lead singer, Serj Tankian (with the beard), is classically trained as an opera singer, which comes out in some of his vocals at times. He also did a "solo" run with some great songs to check out, like Empty Walls, Sky is Over, Baby, Lie Lie Lie, and Saving Us.
    I definitely recommend checking out more from this band and Serj's solo stuff. It may leave you scratching your head more often than not, especially on a first listen, but their music has such a unique and penetrating sound that gets in your ears and sticks with you.

    SOAD is so random and crazy musically, but their lyrics are actually super artsy/poetic. I remember back in high school English class my artsy fartsy old lady teacher asked everyone in class to bring papers with the most poetic lyrics from their favorite artists, and if they impressed her she would break down the poetic nature of them for the whole class. I chose SOAD songs and she read them and picked me as the winner, and she was so fascinated with their lyrics that she dove into more of the lyrics of their other songs and became a fan of them just from reading their lyrics on paper. lol
    They may do it in a crazy, non-conventional manner, but they dive into some super deep topics, war, religion, government issues, drugs, propaganda, corporations pulling the strings, the genocides, etc

  • @thisandthat7927
    @thisandthat7927 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love their reactions. And focusing here on Lex’s reaction, it’s nice to see a reaction where the song wasn’t liked as much. It’s real and it’s ok that’s what hearing new music is all about and that’s what makes music so awesome is when it hits you it just does and when it doesn’t it’s ok it just doesn’t. Give credit for the talent and move to the next. I think there is some pressure from “reactioners” (for a lack of a better term) to give extra praise to a song bc that is what the audience wants and not necessarily how much they really enjoyed what they heard. It can be true that obv people like to hear that the music they like is then liked by someone new to it so it’s easy to want to always give the audience what they want but its just not going to be the case that every song played is going to be thoroughly enjoyed and there is no need to pretend bc that’s what music is all about. You guys give honest takes on the music good job.
