Something max missed in the Harada's Bar thing is that Harada had brought out some Takoyaki as a break snack a couple times during the interview, the ones on the first plate were placed in the shape of a V, the second plate later in the interview was placed in the shape of an F. Then Aoki held the plate up and made the statement "It kind of looks like a 6, doesn't it?" V F 6

I cannot stress enough how correct Max is about how every VF was a new benchmark in 3D fighters (if not all video games). Polygons, textures, reflections, tracking eyes, uneven floors and the physics involved, utilization of proximity moves close to walls, etc. the list goes on and on. It is obvious, with the series inactivity, it would be a hard sell to outspend every other 3D fighter on the market to deliver groundbreaking graphics. But Max is on to something here with the netcode and crossplay. Learn from others and the FGC's needs during the pandemic, but go even further beyond. That is where the investment could best reach a level of distinction similar to the prior iterations.
Sega already branded the latest re-release as Esports, so why not go all-in on player connectivity? I kind of disagree with the posts about a story mode. I think the focus should return to essentially VF4: Evolution's Quest Mode. This time, instead of computer AIs in arcades across Tokyo, the game could focus on real online players in regional arcades across the world. VF's narrative works best on doubling down on the aspect of a kumite tournament and those results. Not so much anything to do with a cinematic conflict playing out with the fate of "Virtua City" at stake.

There will probably never be any more brand new 3D fighter franchises. The legacy fighters we have are the last we're ever getting, and they can only make the numbers work because they're copy-pasting their moveset animations from previous games. Anyone creating a new franchise is going to make it a 2D fighter, because it's a lot less work per character, and they're mostly using licensed characters from anime etc that fans will buy regardless of whether it's 2D or 3D gameplay. So yeah, support VF, Tekken and Soul Calibur. We've probably lost DoA forever. We're down to 2 or 3 games depending on VF's future. If VF doesn't get rebooted, we're down to 2 games under a single company with Harada no longer in charge. Tekken will definitely get another game in the series, but after that nothing is guaranteed. Namco isn't committed to fighting games like SNK or ArcSys, they make whatever genre sells best for the development budget invested.

You gotta include many other factors. Like the ps3 version of VF5 vanilla not having online (which more of the fan base would play had they got the chance) yet the Xbox 360 version did (and it ain't exactly a household name over at Xbox especially in Japan) at a time where online with fighters were catching on since the og xbox
Not to mention they've only released VF5 updates whereas other 3d contemporaries (or just fighting games period) kept up the numbered entries (quality of T6 aside which I found meh) plus FG audiences gravitating more towards more insane character designs and atmosphere compared to the more lax VF.
And that's shit I can think of on the top of my head. Sega also tend to pay attention more to the Japanese arcades than console overseas. Hell, VF5R still has no console rerelease of any kind.
All this is kinda funny that it was VF5 when the series started to REALLY fade away from popularity despite a being pretty polished entry in the series with many changes in gameplay. So it wasn't like the formula got stale.

Here are one of my thoughts about the best ideas for Virtua Fighter 6 (besides the obvious request for rollback netcode)
-A Story Mode: that should play and feels just like the arcades while it only has story elements rather than being a storyteller
-A Tutorial Mode: with all kinds of sensible ways to play the game the right way
-A Demonstration Mode: were it shows off all the VF characters martial art skills
-A Bio Mode: that recaps the characters previous days in their past life with the use of the narrator or text-only
-A Museum Mode: that shows us the old days of sega developing Virtua Fighter, and their Artworks, and their Prototypes
-A Survival Mode: were you fight your way by beating every opponent as possible in order to reach for the highest score, even if you lose just one match
-A Time Attack Mode: were you play up to 30+ matches against the CPU players at a faster time rate
-AND FINALLY! A Quest Mode: were it puts you through an accelerating journey by going through a full course run in the arcades before getting entered in the tournaments while obtaining rewards from each of those tourneys and then it plays a really interesting ending sequence for completing quest mode and it shows a surprised message from the VF team.
Now can something like this become a dream come or what??? because clearly i want that to happen one of these days. i really do! I REALLY DO!

    • @s_factor_sam
      @s_factor_sam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

"Flashy", by its nature, kinda goes against the core gameplay of VF.
All they could do is improve the camerawork and impact effects, because every other element of fighting game "flash" would result in ruining the game feel for some. Just like Tekken 7 and SoulCal 6 did, with their comeback mechanics, supers, guard break meter and soul charge installs in SC6, nerfing movement and defense in T7 while universally buffing wall carry and damage output, etc.
As a long time fan of all the 3D fighters (for 19 years), T7 and SC6 are some of the worst in their series' IMO. They changed the game feel too much for me to enjoy them much. Meanwhile, DoA6 and VF5US feel the closest to the spirit of the entries that made me a fighting game fan.

I feel like the developers of VF4 and our father deserve thanks because without our father, we probably would have never gotten or known about VF (and thanks to the VF4 devs for making such an incredible game with the greatest, most in depth tutorial mode in fighting games history fight me). As for Max’s suggestions for the next installment, I agree up until the Free To Play aspect. It COULD work but I think the best option would be the Killer Instinct model. Free to play with a rotating fighter every week. More characters of the base roster to purchase either individually or as bundles. Same with future characters. Making them ALL free to use though just seems fucking insane. I think that’s Max’s enthusiasm getting ahead of him. Overall, I’m just fucking happy the series might be continuing. Max, I understand netcode is very important to you especially as a content creator. But aside from great online a fighting game should have a lot of content in general, as a video game.
I don't want fighting games to go back to just arcade, training and online. VF4, VF4 evolution and the original 5 had loads of content and really showed how fighting games can have a lot of fun content as a video game not just as a tool for competition. Then the multiple versions of VF 5 came out and ruined that and became a bare bones fighter. Content and net code should be priorities but just hearing netcode being prioritized I think could cut down a fighting games longevity without the single player content and customization to back it up and give people more reasons to come back.
Love your videos and streams Max, hope you have a good day. Just wanted to offer my two cents as a fighting game player who wants more single player content in fighting games.

If they were ever going to add a single player mode, considering the involvement of the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio with VF5 : US, the shift to e-Sports and considering VF has had...very little story, I thought it would make sense to have a fourth wall breaking story mode where you are a prospective VF Champion aiming to win the biggest VF tournament. Just expand on Quest mode from past games to include Kaumurocho/Osaka/Yokohama from the last few Yakuza games and edit it to include more arcades and simulate what Quest mode was like. Working your way up from local tournaments to the big one, where each tournament can culminate in fighting against a named character. Your childhood friend, the local rival, the Gary Oak character etc. Keep it all light hearted and in spirit of friend competition. Make the big rewards for each tournament be money to buy new costume parts and accessories, VF music, titles etc while also giving exclusive rewards. Essentially give players an esport like experience with a bit of glamour and 'dramatic' twists like favourites getting knocked out early etc. I dunno, I think that would work.
But I'm fine with that not being there if some kind of Quest mode was in the game. And of course, rollback.

I have a feeling a new game would be too early. If TMS Entertainment and Sega were to make an anime together again, then I could see a Virtua Fighter 5R anime adaptation that focuses an every character introduced in VF3-5R and tell events of what happened to them during the games leading up to 5R. The Virtua Fighter franchise can benefit from having anime series since the games lack story except for its instruction manuals.
Once the new Virtua Fighter anime becomes a success, Sega and AM2 can greenlight a sixth mainline game and include arcade mode endings (like VF Kids) if TMS Entertainment doesn't feel like making a third anime.

I dunno. Evo Japan featured VF5FS. KOFAS is featuring it in a crossover. And recently, Harada featured the director (Aoki?) on Harada's Bar.
So there is SOME interest in it existing. Personally, I always preferred the exaggerated characterization/impact that Tekken brings, and always preferred it's control scheme, but it's certainly a relevant title that deserves explored more; so many things today would not have been possible without it. It's the "World Warrior" of 3D FGs, after all!
That said... its appeal is founded in it's simplicity, and in an era where all of the big dog games are trying to get into some nice common ground with one another... the real question is what to DO with a VF6. Keep it simple, make it pretty, make the netcode kick serious ass with a simplistic engine behind it? Or get into meters/supers/mechanical depth to bring it on par with the rest of the party? I think that's the real discussion that needs to happen *before* VF6 itself does.

I hope their future plans involve being multi platform, it sounds like they're successful enough on Playstation to stay exclusive but it feels like a missed opportunity to have a big come back and stay limited, especially since one of the most important parts of a fighting game is its community.
They advertised a new VF with a focus on esports, which due to the pandemic now means playing online, fostering a large online player base has become critical to having a successful fighting game and being exclusive to one platform limits that, it ended up being a remaster of 5 which is great but they didn't do enough to the online, which for a game that has had so many versions is quite disappointing especially since they called it "Ultimate", Tekken 7 proved to be extremely successful on every platform including PC (4 and a half years later there are still 8k people playing on Steam every day, double that of Strive) and i imagine that fresh audience would like to check out other 3D fighters, OPPORTUNITIES!!
Consequently since i don't own a PS5 i haven't thought about VF5:US since it came out, i emulated the PS3 version for a bit to get my fix, i feel like i've been watching Sega miss opportunities with this game its entire life, lots of people obviously want to play it, even Harada's begging you to do something.

My favorite 3-D fighter of all time. I love VF man. This is news I’ve been wanting to hear for a loooong time. VF is an amazing series and definitely deserves a 6th game. I can’t wait! I just pray they don’t ruin it and make it more over the top and unrealistic. No colorful hit sparks, fireballs, lasers, robots, etc. Please keep the realism and grounded-ness. That’s what I love about the series. Realistic and accurate hand to hand martial arts. It’s what makes it unique and refreshing compared to other fighters.
