WOW! How come I bought usb pedals to control my DAW when YOUR SOLUTION is so much better?! 100 percent I am stealing this idea to incorporate MIDI GUITAR to live situations !
@JacobLambMusic something like 70% of people in my school use that remote or something similar for flashcards. I'd say your ideas are a heck of a lot more creative! Good stuff
This video sparked an idea for me. If you're familiar with microcontrollers, you can make an inexpensive version of this using cheap parts but the best part of this is that you can add how much programmable buttons you want to have. I'm thinking that maybe with this, you can just drill a few holes into a pickguard for the buttons and hide the small bluetooth microcontroller and battery inside the guitar so it looks less scuffed and cleaner look than a velcroed controller. If you're interested in looking into this you could look into handwiring keyboard guides. It's the same concept but just different application from a handwired keyboard.
This will take some soldering skills and time tho but for a cleaner look i'd imagine someone could refine the idea further. Rehousing the controller you used also works too
Love it! I do like the idea of mounting this within the guitar body, although I'd want it still in back rather than in front. Don't want it to be visible from the front. My father and I have built guitars before - so maybe we'll incorporate something like this into one!
So glad this idea connects with you as well! I think it's so cool - it makes me want to livestream some tunes just to test it out that way. Let me know how it goes!
Don't lie. The use of it for GuitarPro (writing aspect) is to me useless, you need anyway to press on your keyboard to enter the fret number, you will use our keyboard anyway (+there is shortcurts you can use in GP to improve workflow). I just do not see the advantage of this ?
It's crazy handy. I never thought about using it like this! Using it as a procreate controller is smart too - I'll have to suggest that to my artist wife!
the description of this particular item doesn't say it would work with Windows.. can you confirm it does ? 8Bitdo Micro Bluetooth Gamepad Pocket-sized Mini Controller for Switch, Android, and Raspberry Pi, Supports Keyboard Mode (Blue)
I used Guitar Pro a lot to learn songs and I can't tell you how many times I've inconveniently fumbled around reaching for the keyboard and mouse while holding guitar. Such a pain! I even damaged the guitar by accidentally banging it up against my desk more times than I'd like to admit. This would have saved all that trouble! So cool!
This is so cool to see. I've been doing this using ReWASD and a variety of controllers I owned already to practice drums. I also love using a controller to be my own audio engineer at a distance while recording drums.
what people might not realize is that, you don't have to limit yourself to Guitar Pro, or playing guitar. This would be a great way to restart your vocal takes in whatever DAW you're using, without having to leave your recording booth. Last time I saw recording for vocals, it was a two man team, where 1 guy was at the laptop, but I imagine it would be quite a hassle by one's self. Also, if you have a phone, laptop, and Logic Pro, then you can just link them together and control your DAW from it for free.
Yeah cool idea. I have a second wireless keyboard behind the drums but really all I need is the R key to record, the click on/off key, the spacebar, the arrow keys and the back one measure, forward one measure keys. Would have been cheaper to map one of these controllers to the key combos I use to track with and I wouldn't need a little side table.
I'm currently using a foot controller for recording guitar. I basically have a "Retry" button that I can press until I'm happy with the take without taking the hand of my guitar. However, it's always a hassle to position yourself with your foot on the button, and it's pretty straining after long recording sessions. This might be a really cool alternative! I'd have to move my hand a little, but I get a lot more flexibility to change my posture in return. I'll definitely give this a try. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for this. I have their zero 2 and I might try this out. I also have several of those small gamepad sized mouse and keyboard "controllers"/"chatpads" and this makes me want to use those more often instead of full keyboard and mouse while practicing.
A foot MIDI controller does the same, but with your feet. However, I've not seen many compact 16 button controllers, so the 8bitdo has that going for it... Great idea!
Oh, this is such a fantastic idea! Instead of buying a foot switch for a DAW to switch between presets while playing, it might be possible to use something like this! Maybe like a smaller format so it can be added to pickguard, nice!
This is a great idea! I sit with my guitar right next to the computer anyway, but when I go to record drum parts, it’s pretty awkward getting to that “countdown and record” button. For some reason it didn’t even occur to me to use a remote (I might be able to use my phone instead of buying a new peripheral) nonetheless, thanks for opening my eyes to this idea.
This sounds awesome. I was thinking about getting a foot pedal to control my DAW. This obviously wouldn't be a total replacement for a foot pedal, but it could be really helpful for other things.
Linus Tech Tips uses this controller to pause play and move around on their teleprompter for scripted videos. It's such an awesome multipurpose tool. This is sick.
Haha! Maybe so. But I love that I can just take it off and have a normal guitar. It's like all of the functionality without feeling gimmick-y, you know?

BUT........ you could use it to trigger next parts, samples, rhythm parts during a solo section. Don't forget that Roland makes the GK pickup also..... it is a midi pickup that will basically mount to any guitar. It links to a floor unit that coincidentally, Roland makes. That is an effect unit, but it also is a midi linkable control center/hub for the guitar its connected to. Then there is Widi.... wireless Midi dangles you can put in place of cables. I dunno if they will work between the GK pickup and the control unit..... but it will definitely go between your DAW or other Midi compliant gear. Not bad of an idea!!!

I've seen this one using for drawing programs, cool to see it used for something else like this (funny how it works for everything except comfortable gaming cuz its so small)
Place an extra piece of velcro on your amp or pedal board to store the controller when not in use. (So it doesn’t impede the storage of your guitars) Maybe add a piece somewhere near your P.C. In case you need it at hand at your desk.
Not sure if it would interfere with anything, but you can use an adhesive magnetic strip on the controller. Should be less annoying than a piece of velcro.
A lot have suggested a magnet! I'm not sure about interference either - but I do have some guitars without the metal plate as well. Worth a try I suppose! If I can find a way to do velcro/clip/magnet all on the back - it would be mountable anywhere! haha
It is similar workflow for luminite midi controller users, using the small switch it controls the luminite midi controller (m1) which is connected via bluetooth midi to an Ipad. Has more options cause it's midi but can be as simple as using the xy switch to turn pages on an ipad. Fyi, you can buy a money clip and then stick that device to the money clip. Now you can clip on to your guitar strap.
Cool! Just checked out those controllers. Seems like a great option if you want a footswitch. I like that this one fits in the guitar case. The money clip idea is brilliant. I may try that. I just purchased a universal clip for an MP3 player so I can clip it in my jeans next to my everyday carry tools. Might be time to buy another one! If I can put velcro on one side and the clip on the other... double mounting options!
@JacobLambMusic glad I could help. Here is my small looping board. I'm using loopy pro on ipad connected to the flow 8 as an audio interface. M1 is my midi controller, I use the EC and XY switches to control midi actions on the loopy pro app. th-cam.com/users/shortsKXZ-kO8G52k?si=VRY-vCvXmXPrQA9A

Thanks Chris! Definitely wouldn't put something that large on a guitar - but I figure combining it with the remote idea could give even more customization too. Right now I'll stick to the remote and find more ways to use it to make life easier :-)
heres an idea: why not have it built into your guitar? it would be pretty cool to have little buttons on your pickguard (im thinking those useless fingercutters design that jaguars have) or something. maybe a little less practical and more for the looks but most people would even own a guitar if not for the looks anyway so id say its worth it. plus it would probably turn out into a fun video.
Yeah, some others have mentioned a magnet! It's not a bad idea - but half of my guitars don't have the metal plate. Don't worry - the velcro comes off easy and clean
Definitely! Depending on the software. If you can do it with your keyboard, you can do it with this. I use StudioOne, and they have an option to play notes with your keyboard, so I know I could trigger pads with this.
I've been thinking of doing something like this with possible placement on a strap (if not the front of a guitar). I'm mainly using desktop software so maybe the 8Bitdo Zero 2 is what I'm looking for. Thanks! :)
Yeah it works really well for it honestly. I just traded my pedal for a bunch of virtual kits (SLT, Amplitude, Neural DSP), so I'm looking forward to combining it with those.
If you don’t want Velcro, I bet you could stick a magnet to the controller and magnetically attach it to the neck plate. (assuming your guitar has a neck plate, as the one in the video does)
That's a great idea! I'd have a couple places I wouldn't be able to stick it with a magnet - but for others who don't want to velcro things, that's a brilliant way to go non-invasive with it.
I use a BirdKids OffGrid (discontinued). It uses BLE midi, which is great for music / daw. But the one you have is even smaller and much cheaper! Though perhaps the bluetooth is not as fast as BLE midi, so maybe not as ideal for playing actual notes on a synth
dude we already got guitar hero controllers in super smash bros, it's only a matter of time before they move on to pro instruments and then real guitar like rocksmith.
Dude, honestly, it is my favorite of my guitars. My dad got it back in '89 and passed it on to me. They built them different back then! I'll keep it in the family and give it to my kids someday 👍
Very cool! Thanks for sharing sir! 😀👍 Could this potentially do the job of a streamdeck too? 🤔 I might have to grab one to experiment with. I wouldn't worry about the velcro either, I often velcro a Banana to the back of my headstock for when I need a mid song snack 😎👍
I don't see why not! I don't know a lot about Steamdeck, but I understand that it is just trigger buttons, right? This can be programed to any software, so it should work similarly for a lot cheaper. The banana is hilarious 😂 I hope someone does that
@JacobLambMusic I just dropped a small fortune on a Strandberg nx 6 metal with tremolo, a 50 watt Roland cube street ex, a valeton GP-200 guitar multi-effects pedal and a boss rc 500 looper. I have these set up at a location in my cave where it is difficult for me to use my PC to utilize ableton and other apps. Now I can just use the big screen to see what's going on and change what I need to without using a mouse or a keyboard... ALL THANX TO YOU!!!!!
Really depends! The piano can't do every hotkey on the computer keyboard - so there are definitely programs where it is useful to have that option mounted.
🤯 What a great idea! I've got an HX Stomp, and it looked like you were controlling HX Edit with it. How does that work? Is it just controlling MIDI via Bluetooth? I'm trying to wrap my head around the possibilities. Thanks!
Dude it's awesome! I've got the Stomp XL and I was just switching presets with the arrow keys mapped to the arrows on the controller. But you could route any keyboard keys to it that help you navigate around presets quicker.
Is it possible to control software like TH-U overloud and Guitar Rig to change presets and profiles while playing live? How's the battery life. Can you map it into MIDI? Great video as always. Thanks.
Hey Raul! Definitely. Essentially; if you can control the software with your keyboard you can control it with this remote, since we're just mapping keyboard buttons to the remote buttons. The company claims the remote has 12 hours of battery life - which I can agree at least that it lasts for a very long time. No reason we can't Velcro a tiny power-bank next to it on the guitar if we needed more than 12 hours though ;-)
Yeah, a few have mentioned the strap! It's an awesome idea, although I'd want it more out of view. So far I haven't hit it with my belt - but I'm sure it'll happen someday :-)
Haha, I knew someone would be pained. The good news is it really comes off surprisingly easily and clean - but not easily enough to even accidentally fall off. No damage done - I promise!
I've looked into that a bit! It looks cool and I'm interested to check it out. Do you use it? I'm also in talks with Jamstik and just grabbed one of their guitars - I'll have to share my thoughts on here sometime soon!
@@JacobLambMusic I do use it and it is great! I only use it on Windows, though. There's an iPad version, but I don't own one. The caveat is you only hove one output signal transformed into MIDI, where something like the Fishman Triple Play has 6 because of its own pickup. At some point I will have to pick up the controller you are using on the video. There is a midi controller (Graviton) which seems awesome and uses proprietary wireless controllers. Your idea seems that could work for many similar functions without being MIDI. Great idea!
That analogy is complicated by the old slogan "Sega does what Nintendont." Implying there is a "Nintendoes" and "Nintendid", also implying a "Ninten-do".
Wow the little 8 bitdo strikes again. Linus tech tips uses that during videos to switch cams and graphics at the bottom of the screen. It's more than just a game controller
So I think you should've just put one piece of velcro on your guitar strap. lol. Then you can hit buttons without having to pull your guitar away from your body. Another idea would be to put it on a wrist band. Then you can literally use it any time with any instrument with just one piece of velcro. And then you won't have to scrape the velcro off later if you decide to sell an instrument. rofl. Yeah, NOW I tell you. :P
The strap is a cool thought - although I would still have different straps for different guitars! Thankfully I don't really need to pull the guitar away from my body to press buttons, it's more next to me than against me! And the velcro is easily removable - but I do like the strap idea! Someone else suggested a money clip on the strap. I might try that too
I suppose you could with the right setup! As long as the pedal takes bluetooth input. Right now the best I've found with it is controlling the Line6 app (which i typically control with the pedal), so that kind of counts!
Why didn't you create something to attach the bit-do to any piece of clothes you are wearing instead of the guitar? A magnet could work. Or attach it to the guitar strap...
There have been some great ideas on here about other places to put it! I love the idea of a clip to put it on the strap or a belt loop as well, but I'm also really enjoying the Velcro idea. Velcro makes a strong connection without damaging the guitars, not all of my guitars have a metal plate for the magnet, and I'm not sure if the magnet would interfere at all with the remote. Those are my reasons. In fact since this video, I've been thinking of more places to Velcro more things! It may keep my audio interface from sliding on my desk, or designate places from my desk to my laptop for a webcam focused on my fretting hand!
@@JacobLambMusic I was an early backer of the Jammy Evo. Their previous product was pretty awesome but their new model just didn't work. After I found the JamOrigin plugin (v3 beta is free btw) having a midi guitar just felt unnecessary. Their plugin even allows you to configure how string bends and expression is translated into midi.
Got it! Yeah I like the fact that you can physically move the Jammy to do different things, but it doesn't seem all too practical. I just picked up the new Jamstik and will be doing some work for them - seems that it works well and can still be used as a normal guitar at least 🤷 I've been eyeing the JamOrigin - you like the way it works?
Wait till he finds out about midi ... oh he did, is he aware about midi pedals? Or that modular control panel from Switchology. Apparently Midi is in the works for that one as well. :D
Hopefully I won you back with the ravishingly good looks ;-) In all seriousness, $25 is the cheapest you'll find for an idea like this. Midi pedals can get crazy expensive! So maybe it isn't cheap to some - but in comparison to other options it could be called a "cheap" remote.

heres an idea: why not have it built into your guitar? it would be pretty cool to have little buttons on your pickguard (im thinking those useless fingercutters design that jaguars have) or something. maybe a little less practical and more for the looks but most people would even own a guitar if not for the looks anyway so id say its worth it. plus it would probably turn out into a fun video.
That's a pretty wild idea. And I like it. Maybe if I can find a good beater guitar I'll try to install it to see how it works!
Suggestion: for mounting on the neck bolt plate on guitars you could maybe use some magnets in stead of velcro. It kinda hurts to watch 😅
Yeah, some others have mentioned a magnet! It's not a bad idea - but half of my guitars don't have the metal plate. Don't worry - the velcro comes off easy and clean
Really smart! I wonder if you could make beats on that thing
Definitely! Depending on the software. If you can do it with your keyboard, you can do it with this.
I use StudioOne, and they have an option to play notes with your keyboard, so I know I could trigger pads with this.
That's an awesome idea!
Thanks Ryan!
Great idea!
Thanks!
Clever and useful.
Glad you like it!
Looks like a sweet little device - too bad it was discontinued!
genius move
Thanks man!
*me* checks description….
*Also me*…. Finds yet another remote Velcro’d in there
The Velcro adds to the tone.
Finally someone gets it.
we're about to start seeing guitar mods that can compete in E.v.o
Bring it on. I'll be the first to install those mods
dude we already got guitar hero controllers in super smash bros, it's only a matter of time before they move on to pro instruments and then real guitar like rocksmith.
i gotta do this for ableton. so cool.
Definitely! I actually filmed that I thought it would be a cool trigger for Ableton, but ended up cutting that part.
This is a reall good idea! The youtube algorithm is doing its job
Haha, glad you find it helpful!
Nice Squier.
Dude, honestly, it is my favorite of my guitars. My dad got it back in '89 and passed it on to me. They built them different back then! I'll keep it in the family and give it to my kids someday 👍
Very cool! Thanks for sharing sir! 😀👍
Could this potentially do the job of a streamdeck too? 🤔
I might have to grab one to experiment with.
The banana is hilarious 😂 I hope someone does that
Cool idea. I'm more of a mouse & keyboard kind of guy myself, 'though.
Fair enough!
Change your last name to GOAT! Bro... you have absolutely no idea what you have done for me by introducing this idea. U DA MAN!
Hahaha, dude I'm so glad it's so useful to you! What are you thinking you'll use it for?
@JacobLambMusic I just dropped a small fortune on a Strandberg nx 6 metal with tremolo, a 50 watt Roland cube street ex, a valeton GP-200 guitar multi-effects pedal and a boss rc 500 looper. I have these set up at a location in my cave where it is difficult for me to use my PC to utilize ableton and other apps. Now I can just use the big screen to see what's going on and change what I need to without using a mouse or a keyboard... ALL THANX TO YOU!!!!!
@@yankeeverse That's sweet! What a setup! Sounds like this would actually be super useful in your case. I'm glad!
can you program it to navigate ableton or launch sequences ?
nice video btw !
Definitely! It can do almost any key/combination on the keyboard - with very few exceptions.
holy fuck that's so helpful thank you for sharing!!!
Glad it's helpful!
the remote on the midi keyboard was redundant but good idea for the guitar
Really depends! The piano can't do every hotkey on the computer keyboard - so there are definitely programs where it is useful to have that option mounted.
Great idea. I reckon I could use something similar for ableton
Most definitely! I was thinking through DAWs this would be cool with and I think especially Ableton would have some cool loop/setlist buttons.
Back in the mid 90s I was doing guitar synth and put velcro on my ibanez artist 78.
Sounds like you're well-versed in this stuff then!
Now I'm thinking of something similar that puts out MIDI commands, so I can change channels from my guitar.
Definitely! Haven't seen something this small and wireless for midi - but if you find one let me know!
@@JacobLambMusic thanks. 12 hours is plenty. I am certainly getting one
@ Sweet! I've got it linked in the description. Let me know how it goes
stick a velcro pad to your strap - you won't accidentally push any buttons with your belt buckle when it's on your strap.
Yeah, a few have mentioned the strap! It's an awesome idea, although I'd want it more out of view. So far I haven't hit it with my belt - but I'm sure it'll happen someday :-)
1:50 that hurts
Haha, I knew someone would be pained.
The good news is it really comes off surprisingly easily and clean - but not easily enough to even accidentally fall off. No damage done - I promise!
@@JacobLambMusic Nice, I thought it would rip the wood when removing it lol
You should try Jam Origin's Midi Guitar 2 (hopefully, 3 soon!). It can make any guitar a MIDI guitar.
Great idea!
Everything I own has velcro on it at this point.
Good. The way it should be.
Pretty nifty!
Agreed!
The "do" in 8bitdo is pronounced "dough." Like in Nintendo.
That's great to know!
That analogy is complicated by the old slogan "Sega does what Nintendont." Implying there is a "Nintendoes" and "Nintendid", also implying a "Ninten-do".
@@bugslayerprime7674 This unlocks so many possibilities. Also I'll now be pronouncing it "8-bit-does"
Wow the little 8 bitdo strikes again. Linus tech tips uses that during videos to switch cams and graphics at the bottom of the screen. It's more than just a game controller
It's honestly wildly useful. Didn't know he used it as well - I always liked his stuff
@JacobLambMusic i think it's even the same color. You will see it on his belt loop all the time
@@freshbakd Belt loop! What a great idea. I'm going to have to get a clip for this thing.
genius
Thanks!
Does that not hurt your upper fret access?
Depends on the guitar and where you place it! Could definitely be an issue on some models
Hmm, maybe hacking this thing with some foot switches would be an interesting idea.
There are a ton of great midi/usb footswitches mentioned in these comments! Combining them with the remote can be super powerful
Hm this + Ableton = Little Miracles
Agreed! I'm not even an Ableton user but it was the primary DAW I thought this would pair super well with.
Put one on the toilet, that's where all the best ideas come from.
Finally, a good idea.
I might try that too
thought you were going to use it to control pedal fx
I have a midi guitar, do not recommend. You are better off using that VST plugin that can translate guitar audio input into midi signals :)
Which one do you have? I just purchased one! Haha
I just picked up the new Jamstik and will be doing some work for them - seems that it works well and can still be used as a normal guitar at least 🤷
I've been eyeing the JamOrigin - you like the way it works?
@@JacobLambMusic Yes, so far no complaints. Combine that with your neat joystick hack I'll be trying later and it will be extra fun.
Sweet! Maybe I'll give both a try as well. Digging all of the ideas in these comments
1:50 your guitar is a tool and if something makes that tool work better for your situation it doesn’t matter who it pisses off
Totally agree! Make your tools work for you 👍
Wait till he finds out about midi ... oh he did, is he aware about midi pedals?
Or that modular control panel from Switchology. Apparently Midi is in the works for that one as well. :D
MIDI pedals are sweet! But different situations call for different devices, and having 16 buttons mounted to my guitar is also sweet.
This is just in… apparently gamers referred to those as controllers and not remotes.
Thanks for clarifying man! No one up to this point knew what I meant 😉
I think l would put it on a wrist strap
That's a cool idea! Like one of those jogging ones. I like that.
@@JacobLambMusicwow that was fast reply!
@ I do what I can! Just for you Uncle Milty 😆
Did not show how it actually works, what a shame :/
I didn't?
U look like matt Damon like alot
I'll take it! That's a handsome guy.
You lost me at $25="cheap"
And "download app"
Hopefully I won you back with the ravishingly good looks ;-)
In all seriousness, $25 is the cheapest you'll find for an idea like this. Midi pedals can get crazy expensive! So maybe it isn't cheap to some - but in comparison to other options it could be called a "cheap" remote.
@JacobLambMusic nah I stayed for velcro asmr but dont let that dampen your rizzlord spirits
@@cam-inf-4w5 Dang that's lowkey lit of you tho no cap frfr
Too much talk. Show diagrams of what "neat little buttons" can do. Half way into video and just blah blah blah - see me?
Hey Greg! I think one of the neat things about TH-cam is that people film differently, and people learn differently! If it's not for you - no problem! Hope you find some creators you click and connect with 😊
It changed your life? Really?
Yeah man I even grew 3 inches taller and my eye color changed. All because of the remote.
As a working musician it is very possible for a little piece of gear to change your workflow so much that it changes your life, yes.
@ Absolutely! Time is money. Finding better ways to work and be productive definitely makes day-to-day differences.
The latency would be horrible
Actually, there is none! Super responsive and snappy
@JacobLambMusic zero latency is impossible
@@TheXxPSYCHO wow your comment is super helpful and kind and seems well informed. /s
Kick rocks.
@@TheXxPSYCHOit's a game controller. Zero latency is as important to gamers as it is to musicians.
@@NatenNator if a cheap Chinese wireless game controller achieved zero latency - everyone would be using it any paying exuberant price for it. Zero latency is impossible
