May I recommend a Leatherman Style PS for your kit? I take mine on the airlines nearly every time and it gives me some very basic tools. I’ve learned to butterfly the tools out to show there is no knife and put it in the loose change holder.

This is getting crazy. I'd have that on my personal 4 seater plane, for obvious reasons if I were to fly over deserted areas. On a commercial flight? No. Absolutely no. I can't have my fear of the plane crashing dictate the amount of luggage I bring with me. First, I have less chances to die in a plane crash than to die in a car crash. Second: If my plane happened to crash, I'd be very, very lucky to survive. And if I were to survive, I'd be very, very lucky to find that luggage full of survival gear. And if I survived a plane crash... I'd improvise.

Go and ask the people who crashed in Los Andes last century. Some of them survived after crashing, but they had to eat their own friends.

Travel kits aren’t just for plane crashes lol. They’re mainly for while you’re at your destination. Maybe you’re on vacation in Hawaii and decide to go hike to see the sites but get lost. Having basic needs covered would be nice to have.

For my travel bag(s) I cut down a lot of the redundancies for the carry-on and all knives , multi tools , ferro rods and other fire making material go in a checked bag . Overall I prefer to drive and not deal with TSA at all :)

I take that flashlight also, but I unscrew the crenulated bezel and put it on my key ring because I have heard they might not let you on with that flashlight. Has any TSA agent taken it out and looked at it?

Jokeal I fly frequently I carry a single cell CR123 surelight it is has never been questioned plus I double down with a backup light in my carry-on back pack neither one has ever been questioned by TSA. Things that got looked at two empty shaker bottles in my back pack in my suit case and extension cord for my cpap machine. I’m sure the only reason that got flagged was it was someone new in training because it’s never been flagged again.

Good bit of well thought out gear but no space for normal hand luggage. Nothing is cooler than a mile high sling shot.....😵 and on location load out... ✈️ Some sling shot bands would be a good addition to his kit.

  • @spatialinterpretations449

Good kit like the outbreak emergency supplies. I would perhaps add a few supersize space blankets they are very light and will work well with the poncho. One could also get away with a miniature sewing kit also very lightweight.
Gas lighter, matches and paraffin type fire lighters are pushing the boundaries or legality. Most Asian airports confiscate gas lighters. Water can always be gotten on plan - just grab an extra bottle when they serve drinks and put it in your kit.
I had a miniature pair of nail cutters confiscated at a small regional air port in a remote Asian county.

There has been a lot of bad press recently about passengers delaying airline evacuations by trying to take their hand luggage with them. It is not just a matter of the time taken to pick it up. It is also the fact that the emergency chutes are just air-filled plastic. So staff have to stop passengers with bags, and make them put them to one side, to eliminate the risk of the chute being ripped.
This in itself contributing to the delay (and creating a trip hazard near the door). But necessary, as deflating the chute would create the greater risk to life.
Then take another look at your bag, and realise just how dangerous it would be, in such a situation.
Of course preparing is important, and people have had to survive after aircraft crashes. Plus it is possible that the bag can be salvaged, and it will have use. But it is better to adjust your strategy to fit with the best practice for a controlled evacuation.
So I would suggest making a compact kit that could fit in a pocket (for instance an 'Altoids tin kit'. Or, alternatively, be strapped on part of the body (say in the small of the back), where it is not likely to create a snag hazard, or a chute ripping risk. And then be in the habit of ensuring that you put it in place as soon as you have passed through airport inspection. So that there is no delay in finding it, in an emergency.

    Thanks for the fun video.
SAS survival guide is essential reading (before packing). Survival rule of 3 is: 3 minutes without air, or in icy water, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water.
I quite liked an ex-forces' advice:
    1. Prevent a hole (eye protection, gloves, other PPE, Kevlar, portable air?)
2, Plug a hole (fix major trauma - e.g. gunshot, serious pain meds, broad spectrum anti-biotics)
    3. Make a ... (sorry, TSA has this covered)
Then, I'd think about Comm's - call for help (sat phone, mirror, torch, magnifying glass 4 fires, green laser pointer? sadly no flares). Shelter is next (space blanket, thermals, wet-suit?).
Once again, thanks for the video, I enjoyed the mental gymnastics.

On two occasions I had a smaller but similar carry on pack that once it went thru exray customs pulled apart my pack then kept my water filtration pump also my ferocious rod then after looking at the rest it contents officer said (plan on jumping) from then on I kept my survival items in the checked in luggage bag. Air travel is not what it used to be. Just trying to save people embarrassing situation.

First and foremost I want to apologize for the way I worded my comment. I got flashbacks of how rude airport security was to me. Yes it was travel inside the U.S. and most of the problem is they don’t know what some of the items are so they get worried it’s something dangerous. I would not even try some items on international travel. I have left some things out of my travel bag, purchase some items at destination area then mail them back to myself when done with trip. Also I have mailed packages ahead of time to people at the destination area for things that I think I won’t find. Got to give a lot of thought to travel, things have changed.

Could anyone kindly suggest such a kit that would be legal in India? I'll be travelling back in a few months' time, and over there all of these items are virtually unheard of, with the added disadvantage that almost everything people in The US, Canada, Mexico, anywhere in Europe , etc. EDC is illegal to possess and/or EDC over there ( and I mean EDC during a road trip, flights get strict as hell). India also probably thinks its planes will never crash in a jungle/off-grid area outside most communication zones, so that adds to the issue.

I flew from the UK to Portugal last week and I had a very small kit with me, it went in the x-ray machine they took my water purifier, metal pen, metal whistle, one wet fire, tool card fire steal the officers where incredibly rude and aggressive and my gear was in a discreet bag there is 0 chance of getting that back on an international flight

I do like survival stuff but this is just ridiculous. What are you going to do with all this junk on a plane? Get water, a power bank, and cash. What will you do with a multi tool if your plane crashes? Get real.

    • @AndreFavron

I have to agree with the question. This is a great survival bag for anything other than "flying" survival needs. In fact, the only survival item that could help you survive a real flying issue that I always carry in my frequent flying is an emergency disposable mylar blanket the and you didn't mention that. I too live by the "worst case scenario" be prepared philosophy BUT unless I am flying in a war torn environment I would rather focus on the purpose of my travel destination than carry things that are not necessary in civilized environments. Seriously, 10 ways to start a fire where you cannot light a cigarette seems illogical. I do like the Bible though, but even that I have a rugged, smaller, and yes waterproof NLT with a zipper around the cover.
