his points still stands. Imagine if that hits your chin/nose/eye. Those things are all much more fragile than the forehead. If a blow is powerful enough to crack your forehead, it will absolutely demolish anything softer.

They all say tilt your head and keep your hands up, but they never go in depth as to why like this man does. After 6 months training you’ll know why, after taking multiple punches to the nose. If only there was this much understanding before you started training, even to help your progression.

When defending yourself in a real life situation is it better to have your hands open or closed fisted. Karate has told me to keep them closed but I just wanted your take on the subject. Thank you for for your time and your honesty. May life treat you well.
Good advice for defensive positioning of the head. Many people make the mistake of tucking their chin in too much, as you pointed out it can restrict your airways, but it can also restrict your field of view. Can't block or evade attacks if you can't see them coming.
After a few days,my karate nationals are there and during our practices I several times got hit on my face. I could not understand my blocking mistake and was trying to find a way but after watching your video I got to know now how to defend my face Thank you very much sir
Excellent advice that most of us had to figure out for ourselves after a few fights. I would add however, that if the person in question is afraid of getting hit in the face then he shouldn’t fight. I always say, in order to hit you have to be willing to get hit.
You are amazing for the help, I am a fighter who has broken my nose many times throughout my career and becoming a higher level fighter and an older one I am realizing that leading with the face is ineffective at best. - I appreciate knowing that I will be able to continue fighting with considerably less damage received considering, defense and mechanics are the tools of the master.

Don't want to get your nose broke then don't go competitive. For instance. Boxers also ude their shoulder to break your nose in clinch. They use a sneaky elbow. They use a thumb. And don't bend at the waist with your head down because an uppercut will demolish your face. And you don't see the uppercut. Learn not to reflexively close your eyes every time a punch comes your way. A slight tilt of the head and your forehead will absorb some of the potential nose damage. A lot of boxers will actually give you their forehead and hope you break your hand. For goodness sake. Don't have your head down when bobbing and weaving and ducking. Your eyes should still be able to see the opponent instead of the floor.
calvin murry Yup, I don't know a single Boxer in my gym who went competitive for more than a couple of fights and never broke his nose.Just go to the hospital after and let them fix it soon, then you don't necessarily have to get the typical boxer nose.
My MMA teacher years ago taught that lesson well, and to this day, I can't recall a time where I was punched in the nose. I've trained and sparred with and without headgear. I do get caught on the side of the head though, and occasionally take a shot to the chin.. So far though, my nose, I'm thankful to say, has been safe. Watch it get busted this next time out haha. I do have a question for ya though. As I'm getting older and hopefully wiser, I'm more conscious about taking head shots. I haven't been knocked out, but I have had my bell rung well enough to see stars or stagger for a moment. Sometimes I'll go home a little dizzy. I love fighting but I also love thinking. In your opinion, how much damage do you think is being done with these "light to moderate" shots?
Quitw a bit. Boxers tend to get lower IQ the longer they keep boxing, due to hits on the head, severing connection between nerves, within the brain, thus having neural networking take longer, due to less intra neuronal connections, thus lowering quick thinking aka, IQ. Boxers also have a 80% higher risk of getting dementia after they exceed the age of 60
You are the first person I have ever heard say "tilt the head" instead of "tuck the chin." I see what you are saying regarding breathing. I always thought that tucking the chin was to protect the chin from the knockout blow. Is your main chin defense your hand? I know some MMA fighters like Conor McGreggor and Wonderboy Thompson have their heads up...but I have seen both of them get punched in the nose too.
Conor keeps his head up because he uses a Karate stance to keep distance. Gotta see what you're doing on the outside. Doesn't matter on the inside. I was taught to stare at the chest and to not look at kicks as you check them.
I remember in boxing getting my first bloody nose, then every sparing session for the next two weeks I got a bloody nose then I’ve never gotten another one. I maybe think you just need to get over it and improve your defence but still know how to take a punch.
I use the headgear with a bar across, but what he's saying is absolutely true... I myself hardly ever use headgear because I mostly train for self-defense (where you have no such headgear), but I do use it when trying to teach my students to maintain that good guard and posture under pressure when first starting because their instincts can be very bad and safety first (especially as it pertains to your ability to breathe, get proper sleep, and help prevent infection... the nose does all these things)... but ultimately, unless you plan to compete with that headgear get rid of it as soon as it is safe to do so.
