As a Chinese citizen what he said is 100% fax. You bearly see anyone doing idotic trends but more educational, fashionable, cool trick(fixing, making, drawing and etc) and more in douyin rather than the american version but that doesn't mean it is all bad. I think it's mainly because of how long school hours is in China and your parents expetations that most teens study after school til the middle of the night to get a good grade hoping to get into a good university in the future.

It's the users that makes the difference...Education is kind of the top priority topic in Chinese people's life before we start to work for a living and we spend a lot of time at school and on homework. So education related contents are relatable for us and easy to get viral. Even a lot of Chinese internet slang and memes are related to our educating experience. The reason why it's hard to imagine twerking vids you have mentioned would exist on Douyin is that we're more conservative when it comes to sexual content. People would definitely report them as unhealthy content. And dont forget that we use tiktok longer than you guys and the commercial model of douyin gets more matured🥰The competition between Tiktokers is not a joke so they need to create more high quality videos to stand out.

However not sure if the enforcement of time restrictions by Chinas government is true, but if so they are basically doing what every parent should do. I'd argue that tiktok should have an age restriction altogether as the short content really messes with children's brains, educational or not.

The Americans should not have backed the colonial powers, the grand plan to white wash every colony and force them under a singular doctrine backfired.

While I think Agon makes great videos typically, this one is a bit off. The “chinese TikTok” vids he shows are only a small part of the vids on there, and there is still a large amount of useless garbage on there. Some of the studying videos are not in fact promoting studying, but are just videos that complain about studying and the workload of students in China. There are also useless trends in China, where there is this thing called “红眼” (meaning “red eye”), where when someone roasts another person, they get a glowing “red eye” edited on one of their eyes, which appears kinda like a laser beam coming from the eye. Pretty useless and noneducational, if you ask me. Also, there are many videos that conform with foreign trends, as well as videos that create content even more meaningless than the foreign TikTok content. So no, douyin is really no better than TikTok, and I certainly would say that instead of watching useless vids on TikTok or douyin, we could be learning stuff - just like how we all are watching Agon now. This is not an insult to Agon’s research or his credibility, but I find it important that we get the real facts.

Even though some of this is definitely true and many of Project Nightfall's other videos are great, this video did judge all this too partially and came to conclusions way too quickly. First of all, anyone who has ever been on douyin knows it's not just entirely educational, and the majority of Tiktok videos aren't actually idiotic. Plus, it's very unlikely that China would control these apps with pure evil intention for other countries, as it does no good. Now people just have an overdramatic view of what's actually going on in China, when most places in China are quite nice and function normally. So, I think this video Is generally correct but also incredibly one-sided, and I think it's very unnecessary to just say "China is waging a secret war", come on guys.

    • @justinyong8981

100% agree. This is one of the few project nightfall videos i found more one sided in a way. I agree with everything he's saying and I do acknowledge that it feels tiktok is dumbing our generation, but it definitely isn't necessary to say that China is waging a secret war on us.

I have to disagree. It's not trash content - it's a sign of freedom to express oneself regardless of what others' think. A lot of people are tired with overly judgmental people and just need an outlet to express how they feel. Sometimes people just want to have fun, be a bit silly, let themselves loose and not be all serious all the time because it takes away the joys and pleasures of life. I say the right to twerking is the pinnacle achievement of human freedom. Humanity has been oppressed for so long...

Bruh, I had a long comment but I lost it. Here’s a summary, it’s mainly because of a few of the first videos and trends, sure things can change over time, but tictok haven’t changed, its rewarding more and more bad content but in china, there is this stigma around expressing yourself. This means that more creative content (I’m not saying americas tictok is more creative) is pushed down and more “useful” content is shown. This also means that if people start to post more creative content that isent education based, it won’t do well.

Tiktok algorithm are based on your preference just like TH-cam algorithm, in my case, i deliberately NEVER watch those stupid dance, pranks, or useless trends, in the end my FYP is full of science and educational videos.
Meanwhile in China, they deliberately censor those "idiot videos" that makes people only watch educational content in Douyin (Chinese Tiktok), by censoring stupid dance videos, less and less Chinese people making stupid content and encourage Chinese people to make an educational videos.

TikTok not good, you can see changing behavior in TikTok user teenagers. TikTok cause lack of focus, raising anxiety and depression in long term user. the shorts are free but you may pay high price if you get addicted to it

I'm not a TikTok user, but i feel so ashames with the trends in the international version. TikTok in general should endorse meaningful content, and the Chinese version does just that.

It's almost as if autocracy in the government is the solution to crack down on societal issues that plague the people at large. China, I would assume, regulates their Tiktok to show the best it's country has to offer. This in turn, makes people feel proud and promote national pride.

Maybe not all content in tiktok in US is dumb, sometimes the recommendations is just so random at times

That's what agon just said, the algorithm in china vs the world is different, china's recommendation page is full of educational contents while in the world(mainly USA) the algorithm is full of cringe and dumb shorts where the educational contents get outshined. And China is the one who controls the tiktok's algorithm.

just cuz its a chinese firm yall thinking its china doing this. sure it is true chinese tiktok has wholesome and educational content, but they also have various funny skits and goofy videos. the reason why they recommend differing videos is most likely due to cultural differences.

wow, China is very wise on tiktok and doing educational stuff.. While Americans are doing idiotic trends. I wish America can be like China, to getting an award of money for doing a idiotic trend and edits, to make trends that are addicting, inspiring, and encouraging to not destroy our minds on something useless. and yet help people, and earn something.

It's funny that Americans are jealous of China. Actually they should envy all of Asia because our culture is better than those stupid teenagers in America. Our Asian tiktok wins in the dance and transformation trend of the Americans, even though they are the best at it, it's only for them. We also know how to shake our hips and show off our sexy bodies but it's never offensive. I am Vietnamese. In fact, the Vietnamese tiktok is similar to that of China, but the percentage of useful videos is lower. However, it still contains countless good and addictive content that is a hundred times more addictive than that of the United States, where there is a lot of garbage.:)))

Despite all of that, limited time on tiktok or not having limited on tiktok is still basically the same. Before my innocent mind was corrupted around the age of 11 years old, I only search for anime and hobbies mainly, causing me to be more creative than I was. Meanwhile, regarding the other people who focus so much on twerking and explicit stuff, I guess everyone's algorithm is different compared to mine, which is why I don't watch some dumb, immature adults and shitty politics in the first place.
I stop using TikTok because I was bored with it, so I deleted them. Not until my 13th age that I came back for reminiscing about the good old times when I simp cosplayers with good makeup and professional people, I dream to do that once I got my cosplay from my favorite anime series. Due to that, I only consume anime media, not the other way around. Although it did suck out my energy to do my hobbies but not completely. I still love to write and sing like those successful japanese people
But I had to delete it again cause I keep seeing that tiktok is clearly bad for my generation and it's brainwashing people entirely, even my family! I was so disappointed that I eventually choose TH-cam instead, old times is the best than sticking to the trends after all.
Remember, the algorithm is different in most of our favorite fields, if you like food or nature, the algorithm might change into weird stuff, especially nature (I don't know if that's possible because nature would be someone hiking, etc etc.)
In my opinion, it's all up to us whether to keep using or stop feeding our immature egos. Similar to "becoming dumber but staying on the app to satisfy that tiny brain of yours while still thinking if you're smart with a short duration of time", it's foolish. Whether the app is making you a genius or not, knowledge is the power to fight against it. I trust you, more knowledgeable, fewer egos. Not enough knowledge, more egos.
Now that I've thought about it, I do truly wish if Vines never existed. They are indeed my childhood since I'm 06 teen, but I'm not so obsessed with them anymore, so I rather have them as a memory for now. Vines are the main reason why TikTok exists
Thank you for listening to my ted talk

Tiktok's algorithm shows you videos based on your follows, likes, searches, time spent watching, location, etc. I watch and follow a lot of videos on exercise, martial arts, comedy sketches, etc, and that's the type of content I tend to get on the app...
