    I think the snakes are trying to rest on themselves like they would a branch or an arm. They're used to their bodies always being in contact with something and it's their natural instinct to wrap onto a branch

      Wouldn’t more surface area be better to fall on and not less? 🤔

    • @IagoBoom
      @IagoBoom ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My guess was that weightlessness feels a lot like falling and instinctually, it would make sense to form a shape that would most likely get caught on something to avoid that full-force landing. Loops might catch on stuff when you're falling off a cliff.

    • @DemonXeron
      @DemonXeron ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Miller73 While this is correct, it depends. Ideally you want all your vital body parts to be cushioned by your non vitals. It could be a survival mechanism that increases the rate of survival by ensuring the majority of the damage go to areas with better self healing capability.

      it's a valid possibility maybe arboreal snakes could do it,
      yet, it's good to point out from all that I know snakes overall speaking aren't very smart, but reptiles overall can get very stressed, snakes have different reactions and reflexes to environmental changes.
      ...
      it's still fun to think that in a sense when we get scared some of us curl into a ball or try to hide under our blankets as children.
      you can give it a proper evolutional explanation but it still doesn't discard the fact that maybe it's not just one factor playing out here. The hug hypothesis still is my personal favorite😆
      it makes me think that maybe... since now we know they do this, it might not be worth it to put the snakes in an airplane (again) just for the sake of understanding why they do it, poor danger noodles.

    Maybe the snake knots are a mix of 1 and 3: The snakes get confused about where everything is, so they deliberately try to "pull themselves together" so they don't fly all over the place

  • @CerebralOrigami
    @CerebralOrigami ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another reason for the snakes to tie themselves in knots is that it may be a protective mechanism for falling. Being in a knot will allow them to roll down a surface better or prevent whiplash (which can break their spine) when they hit. Also, it may be a response to trying to get out of a bird's talons by using the knot to push themselves out.

    When I was a kid I went fishing and caught this massive eel. It was easily 4 foot long. As I pulled it up it started writhing around and tying itself in knots. I finally got it onto the wharf and didn’t know what to do, so I started crying and then the hook fell out so I just threw it back in the water lol.

    I feel like the snakes on the plane might be disorientation. Like humans! I see a lot of people that goes on those rides tends to throw their limbs around and move like a cat trying to hold onto something. lol

    Maybe snakes tying themselves in knots in micro gravity is because it’s like they are falling and trying to create more surface area for drag to slow them down in free fall?

    I wonder if the snake knot is a behavior to protect against falling out of trees/off cliffs. If they instinctively knot up in freefall it may help the survivability of the landing.

    When I'm fishing and catch an eel, once out of the water it starts making knots, one after another. I was always wondering why and thought that they might have evolved to do so because by making knots, sometimes they can break the line and free themselves.
    Could that be something or it's them just doing their last attempt of not getting eaten?

    Huh, interesting, I'm surprised there isn't a theory for the snake ball that the snakes feel like they are falling, so they curl up in a ball to protect themselves from hitting the ground at high speeds.
    I guess they would have to test dropping snakes from high places, but that might be unethical because it might kill the snakes. I also wonder if they tried this "snakes on a plane" with tree snakes, who often fall from trees anyway, or jump from one tree to another. Weightlessness probably isn't so scary for them.
