Upcycled Pallet Pie Safe with Hand-Punched Tin Panels

- I love bringing new life to old materials, and this pie-safe build is a perfect example. I took a stack of old pallets, broke them down, and crafted a one-of-a-kind pie safe inspired by how folks in the 1800s might have repurposed whatever they had on hand a century ago.
I hand-punched four custom tin panels for the doors (they’re actually made from roofing flashing) with designs my daughter drew, so each one is totally unique. The cabinet also features two drawers at the top, and it’s all wood-no plywood here. I finished everything off with several coats of Danish oil to protect and showcase what can be done with old pallets.
Join me on this woodworking journey-from breaking down the pallets to punching the tin panels-and see how I turned pallets destined for the landfill into something special. I hope you enjoy it!
Materials & Techniques:
Reclaimed Pallets: For the cabinet body and drawers
Roofing Flashing: Hand-punched into tin panels
Custom Flower Designs: Drawn by my daughter and punched by me
Danish Oil Finish: Protects the wood and lets the grain shine

I'm a 57 yr old woman that's been wanting a pie cupboard since my 20's. I don't have a planer or a biscuit joiner but I have everything else. It will take me longer because I'm disabled but I will get'er done. Thank you for the inspiration!!!! ❤

Wow beautiful! When can I expect it's arrival? 😂
@@sherryshelton199 😁
It says its a pie safe, my mother had one but it had a mesh to the front to keep the flies out and for the air to circulate so the pies didn't sweat in warm weather..
@@janelloyd4332 that’s that the punched holes in the tin are for-air in; bugs out.
Really looks nice! I saw staining in the video but did not see any finish going on. Did you use any kind of finish?
@@gottaspeakout4272 I did. Danish oil. A medium walnut.
@ Thank you!
well done mate, all he best for 2025

That's a great art deco. (Glad that you didn't paint it)
@@plumiegainey7323 thank you!
Beautiful work but please do not use dyed pallets.
Those are chemically treated to be used in chemical freighting.
It is not safe to inhale or come in contact with those compounds.
If it's red blue or black, it's been treated to withstand a chemical freight huh oh.
Twenty yrs in the shipping and recieving side of businesses.
I'm NOT just being "one of those people"
I've wanted to do this for my mom for a while now.
Yours is the first video of my research on how to get it from idea to done.
Thank you.
Again, beautiful work.
@@dwaynerobinson7629 I did not know that. Thank you for letting me know. Fortunately it only has books in it.
Safety glasses
@@teresastotler6020 my glasses glasses are my safety glasses for now. Waiting on proper prescription safety glasses though. I finally ordered some.
Those blue pallets are owend by the Chep company. Not sure about there business model today but they used to own those pallets for use in shipping and used in a return policy for businesses
@@lebo8877 they were in a dumpster…I dug them out. C’est la vie.
@ they were in the dumpster at a job site. Better in the pie safe than in the land fill.
@MallinWoodwork totally agree, nice work by the way
