I think you did a great job. If I ever need an impressive sign, this approach is what I would attempt. Your honesty with the dremel is refreshing. Many would not admit their beginner skills or trepidation when attempting new ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Great job! I have made cedar wood signs for years and this was inspiring to me that you did this all by hand. No sandblasters or CnC. Makes me want to get out in my shop!
If you're just using acrylic paint for the wash, use some soap in the water. It's a bonding agent, makes the pigment dry in the bottom. If it's just water, the paint floats and leaves a ring. Looks good. Well done! I used to use this trick for painting minis when I was a teen.
@fdort3971 I don't remember. I was a kid and made my own cheat sheet when painting minis. And I had those big syringes. So I made my soap to water mix. Just dish soap. So maybe ¼ cup to 4 drops of soap, maybe. But it was 3 drops of soapy water to 1 drop paint. And I used it for my minis and it worked great! Maybe 2:1 soapy water:paint. The soap is just a medium, which you can just buy at a craft store. But I was a kid with no money and dial up internet. You did what you had to survive. Haha
As an artist and a professional carpenter, believe me when I say this is a beautiful sign! You made some great choices! My only minor recommendation is to not apply wood glue to both surfaces unless you are gluing end grains together. It actually makes for a weaker bond. But that is a minor technical issue.
Amazing detail and craftsmanship. I’ve gotten away from hand woodworking and do it all on a CNC now. Although very satisfying to make it by hand. For a first carve, you knocked it out of the park.
That is so cool! I also love the commentary on design and process choices along the way. Great video! ❤ I usually do not watch many long videos due to lack of spare time but I came back 4-5 times over a few days. Worth coming back! 🤩👍
Great project, and trying new things is always good, pushing yourself to learn new skills. I love aging things. One suggestion would be to have some patina on the wood around the letters, the rain would puull copper oxide off the metal onto the wood itself. Resulting in tide marks over time - some small streaks of blue/gree coming down would look great.
Love this project and don't sweat all these Bob Villas who have probably never touched a drill bother you. Apparently they don't know anything about wood work anyway.
Copper Dragons in DND are bibliophiles, and they love company. They would be great Librarians. Here's an idea, the kingdoms Head Librarian is a young Copper dragon, they ask the party to track down the last copy of rare books, since all but one each have been destroyed, they will pay a fortune for each one, once the party delivers the last one, the Dragon Librarian will give the party an indestructible magic book they can use to communicate with them and teleport rare books they find along the way, once the party defeats the BBEG, they discover the BBEG has been hoarding rare and legendary books that have been missing from the Royal Library for centuries, the BBEG tried to ____________ the world so they didn't have to pay their late fees. (PS, Campaign long side Quest only, please.)
Nice job. Get some carbide burs, Dremel have a fine one, about 0.8mm. If you need really fine burs, ask your dentist ( ones they use for drilling out cavities). Diamond burs are great for fine sanding.
If budget is an issue I'd suggest Beavercraft's Palm Gouges instead of the hand chisel gouges that you have. Idk if they changed their high chromium steel in the past 5yrs or not, but be very careful on how much force and torque you apply while carving. I was one of their designers & brand ambassadors in 2019. The reason I no longer work for them is because of their heat treat process, the steel they use and I've had countless blades break while carving. If you can afford a little better quality I'd highly recommend my personal favorite wood carving company. Morakniv. I use their Precision, Kansbol, 511, Right Handed Spoon Knife for most of my heavy torque carving. Love the work brother!
Very nice work. Yeah, I hate the so-called copper colors of spray-paint. Not sure what you were going for, but if you want a future build to have more of a copper look, here’s my little trick : give it a base-coat of orange, hit it with gold spray paint; get the low spots with dark brown; and then rub-n-buff the high spots with autumn gold. Gives a nice warm polished copper look.
I do believe that I enjoyed this video of yours more than the last movie I watched. I carve fishing lures and use all the tools you do, so I was quickly able to connect to what you were crafting. And I too share your "beginner" skills and concerns, but try to push towards deeper details with each project. All through your build I kept hoping to see your sign hanging in your brother's "Tavern", and the farther into the video, the more anticipation grew. You did not disappoint! I found great satisfaction seeing him hang your sign in its most appropriate place. If I were to suggest one small thing... I desired to see a fang so after watching your video I looked at pictures of several dragons. Most of the ones with their mouth closed didn't show teeth, but a few did. I would have opted for a few points of teeth showing. A very minor detail and totally optional. I found the song at the end most fitting. Was this written especially for this production or did you happen to find the PERFECT song?
Great work and very nicely implemented. The color scheme is also excellent. And what I love besides this work is the music at the end of the video, it's incredibly great. Please put this song somewhere for download 😁
An absolutely amazing Job. Great project and a great video... And an amazing song! Do you know if it's for download anywhere? I would love to hear a full version of it.
Thanks! I have a lot to learn about the tools. It occurred to me after I made the video, I think the "bits" are called "burs"... 🤔 Thanks for the clarification.
Nicely done. I do know of project you maybe interested in doing that could possibly help improve the techniques you used when making this sign but you won’t be making a sign you’d be making something else.
Wow. I can’t say enough with how awesome this turned out. I am wondering though, can you help me with the best way for printing large images or at least an image that I want to spread out over 4 to 6 pages like you did in your video? Or do you know of a good tutorial that would guide me in the right direction. Thank you in advance
I actually pulled my hair out trying to figure out the best way to do that. I ended scaling it up in photoshop to get the exact size then saving the image as a PDF of all things. Adobe Acrobat is actually really good for printing large images spread over several pages. Hope that helps.
@shanebailey6341 like the REAl woodworker who didnt know 5he size of the wood he was working or the right blade for intricate cuts on a bansaw? Ive been cutting trees for 30 years.
I don't think I've ever heard of this wood pop'laar before.
🤦♂️Tell me you don't know ANYTHING about wood work with out telling me.
SURE YOU HAVE!!!!!!!!!! It is stacked right next to the PIE'N in the wood bin!!!!
Could have used O-aak or Map-le’
Terrific looking sign. I would have liked to see a red "jewel" in the eye.
Nobody asked you
@@RobJames82 I'm not allowed to offer an opinion? I thought he did a great job.
YEAH! This is so awesome. You did such a great job on it, all that work paid off for sure! The Copper Dragon DND room is epic!
Thanks Matt!!
Great job, amazing👏🏻👏🏻

Interesting tip! I've never heard of it. What type of soap? What is the ratio of soap:water:paint please?

Excellent job on both the sign and the video. I'd like to see more maker videos from you.
Looks amazing. That reaction at the end makes it so worth it!

Thank you for sharing your project, a good bard sign is always great for an immersive campaign
The biggest basecoat, wash, highlight project i have seen. Well done!
Good work, nice film!
Amazing piece of work!
Great job! love that you made it all by hand and not on a fancy CnC machine.
Looks amazing! Great work always requires attention to all the small details!
Wow! Simply awesome! Well done!
Thank you so much. Glad you like it!
Amazing job... Funny I used to hang out at a bar in college called The Copper Dragon. It was in Carbondale Illinois.
Thanks! WHAAAAAAAAAT??? There's an actual bar called "The Copper Dragon"? So cool.

Me too! Thank you!
We used to have a local micro brew called The Copper Dragon Brewing company. I miss that place.
That sign turned out so amazing! All the hard work you put in paid off for sure. It's very inspiring 👍
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
Love to see it done the none computer way, gave me ideas, I better go and lay down so they pass or I end up in the garage...😁

Can't help but think that with the color you chose for the eye, a GID paint would have added an interesting touch.
Looks great! Nice design and good work! Thank you for the video!🐉
Great job! and a nice place to put it in.
Nicely done.
i love the patina and highlight effect on the copper. i did a similar finish on my Goregeus Goblin build video
Really enjoyed this, been wanting to do a project with Dragon and Wolf, wanted 3d, I now have an idea of how to get the effect. Thanks

Lol! Drilling the nostrils is 100% like a Covid test!
I want to go to the Copper Dragon.
Great video. I Just subscribed 👍
Thank you! Glad to have you.
Love the sign. And the ending song is fantastic. Is there a link to the song?
nice work but why not use a hand fill for the edges
Copper oxide is green. If you used green for the shading the copper would have popped out more.
Nicely done. I do know of project you maybe interested in doing that could possibly help improve the techniques you used when making this sign but you won’t be making a sign you’d be making something else.

“Poster” setting on a printer will usually do it. You just input how many pages

@@therangersworkshop8165 thank you. I’ll try that. Is adobe acrobat free?
Care to share where the dragon design came from?
great video!!
random second comment, to help with the algorithm!! 😃😄😁😆🤣😂😄 it likes !! and emojis
Why didn’t you use the scroll saw to cut the letter out might of been easier
What is the copper dragon song at the end?
That's a song I wrote about a Tavern in one of our DnD campaigns. It's also the name of my brothers game room which was inspired by that same tavern.
You seriously used 2 clamps for the glue up?...
Gold rub & buff works better
"Popler" is the correct pronunciation ... because you'll never find a pop lar tree.
Might i also suggest some fine 3d printed prosthetics for your inevitable and coming bandsaw injury?
Thanks Webster for the English lesson but I believe any REAL woodworker knows EXACTLY what wood he was referring to.
@shanebailey6341 like the REAl woodworker who didnt know 5he size of the wood he was working or the right blade for intricate cuts on a bansaw? Ive been cutting trees for 30 years.
poplar is a bit to green for me, you seem to have found a better piece
Beautiful work! Me personally I would have liked the video even more if you had not used the background music while working on the art work…
im sorry i ruined your 666 subscribers but this is too awesome not to sub!
That's the widest 1 x 8 I've ever seen, dude. You would have to believe that the saw blade is a 6-inch blade. The board looks more like a 1 x 12 or 16
Oh yeah you're right. My mistake.
You just haven’t worked with Pop LARR before, bud.
